The Department
The oceans hold a wealth of mineral/hydrocarbon deposits, which need to be surveyed and explored by trained marine geoscientists. CUSAT was the first University in the country to begin a full-fledged post graduate programme in Marine Geology in the year 1976 taking into account the global advancement in general and national needs in particular in the field of Marine Sciences. A 3-year M.Sc. (Tech) programme in Marine Geophysics was subsequently introduced in 1992 as a logical extension to the existing Marine Geology programme, which has now been restructured into 2-year M.Sc. programme.
Both the programmes have been designed to aim at the development of manpower in the field of applied geology and geophysics with a special emphasis on off shore areas with a view to cater the needs of various research institutions and survey organizations as well as private companies engaged in mineral exploration, sea bed surveys, remote sensing and oil and groundwater prospecting.
Four members of the faculty have had opportunities for research / training in overseas institutions through the award of German Academic Exchange Fellowship, Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship etc.

The marine geology and geophysics option within the School of Oceanography is complemented on campus by strong departments in Geological Sciences and solid earth Geophysics, Mathematics, applied Mathematics, and Engineering. Basic courses in Oceanography and these related programs set the stage for advanced specialized course offerings. There is strong emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches reflected in course offerings and research. A unique component of our program is UW-funded access to our 274-foot research vessel, the R/V Thomas G. Thompson, for sea-going classes and exploratory research. Mid-Ocean Ridge Processes The School of Oceanography's proximity to the Juan de Fuca/Gorda Ridge system and Cascadia subduction zone provides ready access to an ideal natural laboratory for study of the active components of a geological plate. This local focus is complemented by additional work along the global mid-ocean ridge. Key among the processes operating in the ridge environment are the flow of energy and materials from the Earth's interior to its surface, the interaction of this flow with a subsurface biosphere of unknown extent and character, and the effect of this flow on the global ocean. Research interests of marine geology and geophysics faculty span mantle circulation, magma genesis and crustal formation, hydrothermal circulation, conditions of water-rock reaction, and measures of energy and material flow. There is broad interdisciplinary interest within vent environments and a special focus on advancing our knowledge of the sub-seafloor biosphere. An exciting new thrust is the idea that seafloor hydrothermal systems may serve as an analog that can help to shape the search for microbial life on other water-bearing bodies in our solar system, one of the themes of the UW Astrobiology Program.

Coastal Studies and Marine Geology
The Department of Geology has personnel, facilities, and equipment to support diverse marine investigations in coastal, shelf, and deep-sea processes that involve sedimentology, paleontology, ecology-paleoecology, geochemistry, geochronology, stratigraphy, and geophysics. In addition to the campus curriculum, students may conduct research through the Marine Geology Laboratory at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography outside Savannah, or at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island . Research vessels, small boats, vehicles, and a variety of laboratory and field equipment are available at these facilities to support research in coastal and shelf environments. Work in the deep-sea may be conducted aboard larger vessels from other institutions, or based upon cores in repositories. Faculty members whose primary research interests include work on marine geology include Drs. Ray Freeman-Lynde Susan Goldstein , and Bruce Railsback . Dr. Freeman-Lynde's research centers on passive continental margin evolution, including the stratigraphy and geochemistry of margin strata. Dr. Goldstein works primarily on salt marsh foraminifera, especially their ecology, taphonomy, paleoecology, and relationships to elevation and sea level. Dr. Railsback's work includes isotopic studies of shallow and deep marine carbonates to interpret changes in deep ocean circulation prior to the Cretaceous. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of the diversity of courses offered in allied fields (see

Marine Geology and Geophysics Conditions at many of these sites make it difficult for marine geologists to visit and study. Before the technological advances of only a few decades ago piloted submersibles, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and programmable acoustic instruments attached to ships oceanographers could only speculate about the very existence of underwater geological features. Such advances have not only proven the existence of underwater features, they have made it possible to develop accurate maps and detailed, 3-D computer models of the seafloor. Some of the major areas of specialization within the field of geological oceanography are Seismology Ocean Drilling Ocean Mining, Oil and Gas Exploration , and Coastal Geology.
