The main emphasis was on piston coring to establishing the Quaternary evolution of the Baltic Sea. Since the early 1970's acoustic methods have been increas ingly used to measure the thickness and extent of both Quaternary deposits and sedimentary rocks in the Finnish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
