COASTAL MARINE GEOLOGY
The Coastal Marine Geology Section conducts research on the Maine Coast and provides technical information to other state agencies, local governments, businesses and the public involved in the coastal zone. Marine geologists conduct applied research and mapping on subjects such as beach and dune geology, nearshore nourishment sources, dredged material disposal sites, marine habitats, and strategic minerals. The Section also conducts coastal hazard studies related to sea-level rise and measures rates of beach erosion and bluff retreat. Marine geologists evaluate shoreline types for sensitivity to marine oil spills. Research is often collaborative with other state and univeristy scientists and uses geological and geophysical methods of sampling and surveying shoreline and underwater areas. Research results are regularly published in reports, maps and scientific journals as well as presented at public meetings. The coast of Maine has 5600 kilometers (3480 miles) of tidally-influenced shoreline and is the third longest in the United States. There are about 3500 islands included in the shoreline length. Mapping has estimated that about 2% of the coast (120 km or 75 miles) has beaches. About half of this distance is made up of sandy beaches and the other half is made up of coarser gravel and boulder beaches. The latter category is commonly pocket beaches, of which there are over 200 pocket barrier beaches that front coastal wetlands. Most large sandy beaches occur along the southern coast between Kittery and Cape Elizabeth, south of Portland. A few miles of sandy beaches also occur in midcoast Maine near the mouth of the Kennebec River.

This version of the Antarctic Research Facility web site and database was developed through an informal cooperative program between the Florida State University School of Information Studies (LIS) and the Antarctic Research Facility (ARF). LIS student interns, under the guidance of faculty in both departments, designed and constructed the website and database with standard applications utilized in LIS undergraduate courses. This cooperative venture between the two departments gives students "real-life" web site and database design, programming, and maintenance experience while providing the Antarctic Research Facility with a web-site and database that will continue to expand as future LIS interns take on new projects. Marine Geology
Why study seafloor composition? NGDC archives hundreds of digital data files and analog data sets (paper, film, etc.) containing descriptions and analyses of sediment and rocks from the seafloor. The Marine Geology Inventory provides searches of, and links to all digital and analog data archived by NGDC. Many digital data files are downloadable, and most data reports are viewable, through inventory searches. The provides searches of seafloor and lakebed sample material available directly from participating oceanographic institutions. Several data files have Interactive Map ArcIMS interfaces, as well as Text Searches Contributions of seafloor data in any well documented form are welcome. Data are permanently archived and publicly available.

The World Data Center for
encourages active exchange among scientists through international cooperation. The ocean floor is a natural archive of information on how Earth works and has worked for millions of years. The composition and structure of seafloor sediment and underlying basement crust yield important clues to the evolution of life, ocean-atmosphere dynamics, and the tectonic processes that shaped Earth's continents and ocean basins as we know them today. The World Data Center for MGG, Boulder manages all types of data from the ocean floor including underway geophysical measurements and derived gridded data sets, and descriptions and analyses of geologic samples. Data are contributed by sources from around the world and were originally collected for a variety of purposes, including academic research, international and interdisciplinary scientific projects, mineral resource evaluations, defense, and environmental baseline studies. Data are available at cost of reproduction, or free on exchange. Many data sets are also available for free download.

http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/divs/mgg/
The Division of Marine Geology and Geophysics conducts research and graduate instruction in marine geology , geophysics and geochemistry. The programs range from purely laboratory studies to applied field work. Located on the Virginia Key Campus of the University of Miami the School is adjacent to NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratories (AOML) and Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFC). There are strong interactions between the division and AOML, Florida International University Nova Southeastern University and the University of South Florida at St. Petersburg and Tampa. Graduate Study programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are open to applicants with a background in geology, oceanography, or the physical sciences. Interdisciplinary studies with expertise in physics, chemistry, mathematics and/or biology are encouraged. Faculty members in the Division of Marine Geology and Geophysics (MGG) have diverse backgrounds and a wide range of scientific interests. The following pages will introduce you to the current academic staff through a brief description of their scientific interests and some of their recent publications and courses taught. As a prospective student, you should feel free to write or call any of the faculty about opportunities and activities in Marine Geology and Geophysics at RSMAS.
