Students in the EEB concentration earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. In addition to courses in the Biology Core Curriculum, Students in the EEB concentration take a variety of courses dealing with ecology and the environment. In addition, students must complete either an internship or an independent research project. To see the specific requirements for the EEB Concentration, click here What is Ecology? Ecology is the study of the interactions between living organisms and their environment. These interactions, in turn, affect the distribution and abundance of organisms. Ecologists study a tremendous variety of organisms and environments from microorganisms in the soil or a puddle of water to plants and animals in a forest or ocean. Since human activity often has a detrimental impact on the natural world, ecologists are often involved in identifying and finding solutions to environmental problems. Currently Offered Courses
BIOLOGY 109: Introduction to Marine Biology: lecture and laboratory Course description: Provide an introduction to marine biology. Selected marine organisms are used to develop an understanding of biological principles and processes basic to all forms of life in the sea.In addition to these basics, the course will cover aspects of taxonomy, evolution, ecology, behavior and physiology of marine animals. Students will use the Marine and Freshwater Science Institute as their laboratory for the study of marine plants, plankton, invertebrates and vertebrates, with the emphasis on tropical Pacific marine life. The ecological perspectives concerning human intervention in the sea such as pollution, fishing and mariculture will also be discussed. The course will include lecture, discussion, and lab work at the Science Institute. Recommended prerequisites: One year of high school biology and chemistry. No previous knowledge of marine biology is assumed.

    Careers in Marine Science
What does a Marine Biologist do?
Two-thirds of our planet is covered with ocean and just about every field within science can use the oceans and ocean life as a subject for study. Many scientists involved in marine biology are primarily ecologists, zoologists or botanists who study an organism or organisms that live in the sea. Marine science can also include archaeology, anthropology, sociology, engineering and other studies of human relationships with the sea. Ocean science, or oceanography, is the study of the global marine environment, from the polar seas to coral island lagoons. In their studies, marine scientists combine direct observation with a systematic approach for understanding the processes that control the earth's oceans. Recent concerns about global warming have encouraged scientists to view ocean science and earth science in a more holistic way in order to understand the global system as a whole. This and the plain fact that so much of the world's oceans have yet to be explored make for many exciting possibilities in the immediate future. Biological Oceanography focuses on marine organisms and how marine microbes, plants, and animals interact with each other and with the physical, chemical, and geological processes in the ocean. Biological processes in the ocean play a critical role in the total Earth system, particularly in the cycling of important biogeochemical materials such as carbon and in solar energy capture and conversion into organic material. Biological oceanographers study the distributions and abundance of marine organisms in the open ocean, coastal zone, and estuaries, both in the water column and on the seafloor.

The Biology Department There are 21 full-time, one permanent part-time and one adjunct faculty members in the Department of Biology, each having expertise in a different area of biology. This allows us to offer a diversity of courses. Students interested in cellular, ecological, physiological, or more classical courses of study will find numerous courses available in each of these areas. In addition, some courses offered by the Departments of Physics and Anthropology may also be taken for credit towards the major in Biology. The Department of Biology is equipped with a variety of research-quality instrumentation for conducting scientific studies at all levels of biological organization, from the subcellular to population and a variety of community phenomena. An assortment of equipment, including a laser scanning confocal microscope, a scanning electron microscope, a video-microscopic facility, gas chromatographs, liquid scintillation counter, ultracentrifuge, ultrasound recording equipment and spectrophotometers, enables the department to investigate a number of biochemical and cellular phenomena. The availability of oxygen analysis systems, calorimetric equipment, instrumentation for ionic and osmotic determinations, and electrophysiological apparatus provides for detailed studies of organismal phenomena.
