http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/marinebio/becoming.html
Becoming a Marine Biologist What is marine biology and what is a marine biologist? I Want to Train Dolphins and Whales Here's my advice. Love dolphins and whales. Admire their beauty and their grace as they swim and move through their scores of exciting behavioral maneuvers. Worry about the whales, for many of them are in danger. Support organizations that try to conserve whales. Okay. Now please keep in mind that there are VERY FEW people in the world who study whales or other marine mammals! Same thing for dolphin trainers. Yes there are many public aquaria in the United States, but the number of people that work with dolphins as trainers are also very few. Most emails I get start with "I have always wanted to be a dolphin trainer." Fine, but you better keep your options open, just the way aspiring rock stars usually have a "day job." If every person who wanted to study dolphins went on to do so, then just about every dolphin would have its own personal observer! You are in a vast company because everyone loves dolphins. The important point is: MARINE BIOLOGY IS A LOT MORE THAN DOLPHINS. There are many important areas that you can study. Dolphins are an important part, but only a part, of the universe of marine biology. (Same goes for you shark fans.) If you truly wanted to do research on marine mammals you could enter this field through one of two routes. First, you could become a biology major in college, taking courses in vertebrate biology, physiology and evolution. Most marine mammalogists were biology majors in college. As an alternative, you could become a veterinarian, with the ultimate hope of understanding mammalian anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, and understanding the biology of mammals and their ailments. This would be a very rare route, although an interesting one.

About marine biology. What is marine biology? marine biology is the study ofmarine organisms, their behaviors and interactions with the environment.

About Marine Biology
What is Marine Biology?
  • Marine biology is the study of marine organisms, their behaviors and interactions with the environment. Marine biologists study biological oceanography and the associated fields of chemical, physical, and geological oceanography to understand marine organisms. Marine biology is a very broad area, so most researchers select a particular area of interest and specialize in it. Specializations can be based on a particular species, group, behavior, technique, or ecosystem. Molecular biology is a related area of specialization in marine biology. Researchers apply molecular techniques to many environments ranging from coastal marshes to the deep sea and to various organisms such as viruses, plants, and fish.
Why is Marine Science Important?
  • As growing global population stresses the ability of our society to produce food, water, and shelter, we will continue to look to the oceans to help sustain our basic needs. Advances in technology, combined with demand, will improve our ability to derive food, drinking water, energy sources, waste disposal, and transportation from the ocean. It will be up to this and future generations to build upon our existing knowledge of the ocean and its potential to help meet the needs of the world and its inhabitants.

Marine Biology Minor
Prog ram Description
The Marine Biology Minor is designed to provide NU undergraduates with a strong foundation in marine biology and related disciplines. The Minor has a strong hands-on component involving course work, Marine Biology research projects, and marine related COOPs. Fulfillment of the Marine Biology minor requires 6 courses to include Principles of Biology I, Principles of Biology II, Marine Biology and three Marine Biology elective courses along with 4 credits of Marine Biology Projects. Students enrolled in Northeastern's cooperative education program will be encouraged to take part in marine-related COOPs. Objectives of the Progra m
The academic objectives of the program is to provide a solid marine biology background and sense of community to CAS students interested in marine biology. The program would include a strong field and laboratory experience through faculty-sponsored research programs which can fulfill the Experiential requirement of CAS. The proposed coursework, research projects, and COOP participation will provide a structured curriculum to CAS students interested in marine biology and ecology and provide recognition for this focus. An objective of this program will be to make the facilities and programs of the Marine Science Center more of an asset for CAS undergraduates outside the Biology Major. This program will increase mentoring by MSC faculty and adjuncts and increase interactions and opportunities among students with marine biology interests.

BACKGROUND
The Institute of Marine Biology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1967. At the time of the WTEC visit, this organization employed 450 persons (300 research staff and 140-150 engineers and technicians). Within the Institute there are 20 laboratories and an auxiliary services group. In addition, there are four field stations and the Far East State Marine Reserve. Two smaller research vessels support seagoing projects. In addition to the research ships, the institute conducts many dives to collect specimens and to do in situ research tasks. Most of the scientists are divers.

There will be a workshop scheduled after class time for those students who do not have an e-mail address or who have difficulty with WebCT.
    • Grading: Grading is based on the total points possible in the course during a particular semester, which can vary with the number of activities. In other words, not all the activities in the Zoology 200 Lab Manual may be assigned and others may be added. The highest number of points that any student accumulates is the top A. The other grades are scaled from the highest score: 99-90% is an A, 89-80% is a B, 79-70% is a C, 69-60% is a D, below 59% is an F.

New Woods Hole Center for Oceans and Human Health established
Scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have joined together to form the Woods Hole Center for Oceans and Human Health (COHH). The new Center, with administrative offices at WHOI, will serve as a focal point for research on issues at the intersection of oceanographic, biological and environmental health sciences, such as harmful algal blooms and organisms in coastal waters and estuaries that cause human illness and death. This new Woods Hole Center and three others being established around the country are the first in a new collaboration between the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), one of the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The four joint Centers for Oceans and Human Health (COHH) will be located at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, the University of Miami, the University of Hawaii, and the University of Washington. More than twenty proposals were submitted from around the country for similar centers, with four selected for funding. The federal agencies expect to invest a combined total of $5 million annually for the next five years to support the four centers. The centers are expected to sponsor research by a large number of investigators, students and scholars in the next five years.
