Botany and Zoology These two fields of biological science are centered on organism-based studies. Such research ranges from behavioral interactions of individual organisms within populations to the structure and function of complex communities. The primary aim of botanical and zoological studies is to understand how organisms survive and reproduce within the limits imposed by the current or past environments. Such research can be at refined scales, such as microscopic observation of the smallest organisms, to broad scales, such as unraveling earth history through examination of fossil remains. Students focusing on botanical or zoological studies typically receive training in cell biology, anatomy, physiology, embryology, genetics, conservation science, ethology, ecology, and evolution. This background can be used as a springboard to further training in medicine or graduate education. Tracks: A degree in Botany can follow one of two tracks . The track in Cell and Molecular Biology is designed for those interested in using their undergraduate experience for careers in medically-related professions or for a graduate career in medical or molecular sciences. The track in Ecology and Evolution is designed for those interested in graduate training in plant diversity. A degree in Zoology can follow one of four tracks . For those interested in using their undergraduate training for immediate employment, the track in Conservation and Biodiversity is designed to prepare students for jobs in government and private conservation organizations or the environmental consulting industry. Three tracks are offered for those interested in preparing for advanced education. The Cell and Molecular Biology track is designed for those interested in medical-related training (medical or pharmacy school), the Pre-Vet track is designed to prepare students for entry into Vet School, and the Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior track is designed for those interested in graduate education.

Marine Science: Educational and Career Outlook What is Marine Science? What are the Educational Requirements? Careers and Salary Outlook Related Areas of Study WHAT IS MARINE SCIENCE? Marine Science is the study of the oceans and coastal or inland waters connected to the sea. It includes the study of the plants, anmials and microorganisms of these waters; as well as the physics, chemistry, and geology of the land and water. Marine Science also encompasses the study of the importance of the oceans to the natural environment and human impacts on the marine environment. Marine Scientists may work in laboratories or in the field, gathering and interpreting data and material which may be collected in many ways. Socially, the importance of Marine Science as a profession and field of study is clear, based on the fact that the majority of the world's population lives within close proximity to the ocean. Marine environments are important sources of recreation and economic activity. Environmentally, the field will continue to gain importance as the health of marine environments is compromised by coastal development and many other environmental pressures, and with the continued evolution of laws related to the marine environment, such as the Marine Mammals Protection Act.

The Rainforest and Reef Conservation Fund is a non-profit organization based in Grand Rapids, Michigan USA. Our Board of Directors includes biologists, educators and members of the business community. Over time, we have formed partnerships with organizations committed to conservation and education in nine countries. One means that we have worked to support each of their efforts is through the development of high quality and affordable RAINFOREST and MARINE ECOLOGY FIELD COURSES at each site. Presently we have programs in Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, British Columbia, Hawaii and Australia . Our FIELD COURSES take place during June, July and August, but are available at other times throughout the year upon request. Ninety-nine percent of participation fees go to the organization sponsoring each FIELD COURSE and these funds contribute directly to the development and support of their conservation and education efforts.

New Center for Oceans and Human Health Established in Woods Hole
Florida Red Tide Bloom of Karenia brevis Scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have joined together to form the Woods Hole Center for Oceans and Human Health (COHH). The new Center, with administrative offices at WHOI, will serve as a focal point for research on issues at the intersection of oceanographic, biological and environmental health sciences, such as harmful algal blooms and organisms in coastal waters and estuaries that cause human illness and death.
This new Woods Hole Center and three others being established around the country are the first in a new collaboration between the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), one of the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The four joint Centers for Oceans and Human Health (COHH) will be located at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, the University of Miami, the University of Hawaii, and the University of Washington. More than twenty proposals were submitted from around the country for similar centers, with four selected for funding. The federal agencies expect to invest a combined total of $5 million annually for the next five years to support the four centers. The centers are expected to sponsor research by a large number of investigators, students and scholars in the next five years.

27-May-2004 Biological Science @ UNSW The University of New South Wales has a national and international reputation for quality education and research in many fields of Biological Science. Cooperation between teachers and researchers with expertise across many disciplines, especially in the marine and environmental sciences, provides multidisciplinary training for all our students.
What is Biological Science?
Biological Science explores how animals and plants function, evolve and relate to one another as well as to the environments in which they live. Study in Biological Science can include courses in animal behaviour, animal and plant physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolutionary studies, genetics, marine biology, plant morphology and taxonomy. These are particularly relevant to wildlife management, agriculture, forestry, conservation and related environmental sciences.
At UNSW, you can choose to specialise in the following areas:
Zoology
Zoology is the study of animals. You will learn about the structure, behaviour, ecology, genetics, evolution, and classification of animals.
