Marine Biology Summer Camp
2004 Dates: Session 1: July 25-31 Session 2: August 1-7 Program
Our classrooms are the dynamic, thriving marine environments of the southern New England coast. Summer Marine Program students will learn about coastal ecosystems, food webs, productivity of the sea, plants and animals in the coastal zone, current events in marine biology and much more. Field excursions will help unlock the excitement and fun of marine biology:
  • Learn oceanographic sampling techniques Identify marine organisms Explore bay ecosystems by sea kayak Snorkel along barrier beaches and tidal pools View whales during a boat trip off Cape Cod

Field trips are complemented by challenging laboratory demonstrations and experiments. Typical topics include:
  • Water pollution analysis Plankton sampling Productivity studies Shellfish and finfish biology

Recognized experts will present guest seminars on current topics in marine biology. Previous presentations have included:
  • Marine mammal protection Food from the seas Invasive species Overfishing Toxic plankton blooms Aquaculture

Facilities
The Rhode Island coast is an outstanding location for marine science education. Within a short boat ride or drive are perhaps the best examples of rocky intertidal, tidal pool, salt pond and barrier beach habitats on the US east coast.

  • Overview
This program provides students with the academic background and the applied skills required for employment as research assistants and technicians in a variety of aquatic and environmental fields. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on laboratory and field procedures commonly used by professionals working for companies and organizations involved in aquatic research and ecosystem management. Special attention is given to the collecting and identifying a diversity of marine organisms, performing oceanographic sampling procedures aboard our own research vessel, service learning experiences in the southern Maine community, plus microbiology and chemistry laboratory techniques. Many graduates of SMCC's Applied Marine Biology and Oceanography program have found employment with public and private marine biology laboratories, state and federal marine resource agencies, state and federal environmental protection agencies, environmental consulting firms, and water districts and pollution control facilities. Graduates who wish to pursue a Baccalaureate Degree, can benefit from our articulation agreements with several schools like the University of Maine, the University of Southern Maine and Maine Maritime Academy. These agreements allow students to transfer all or nearly all of their credits toward four-year degrees in Biology or Marine Biology.

The emphasis is on basic principles that help us to understand the processes that shape life in marine environments. The marine biology major is a demanding program that offers a B.S. degree and requires several more courses than the general biology B.A. major. Alternatively, students can opt for the general biology major and choose a marine biology concentration.

Augustana College is a member of the Duke University Marine Sciences Education Consortium. This consortium was developed to provide a formal curriculum in the marine sciences, including supervised research, to member institutions. Such institutions are liberal arts colleges or universities attended by students who are preparing for careers in the marine sciences or who have a strong liberal arts interest in the oceans but for whom no specialized programs in the marine sciences are available. Consortium students have access to the summer program (Summer Term I; Summer Term IIIntegrated Marine Conservation Program) at the Duke University Marine Laboratory as well as spring and fall semester programs in marine sciences. Consortium members join upon invitation only.
For over half a century, the Duke Marine Lab has been chosen by students for its unique high quality education: a learning as well as living experience. It enjoys both a national as well as international reputation in its field, continuing to be a leader in marine and environmental sciences and policy education. The Lab's location on the "Crystal Coast" of North Carolina with its pristine beaches, amidst a highly popular seaside resort area, historic forts, and other popular attractions makes for one of the most exciting places on the globe to live and study.

by John E. Reynolds III - Eckerd College and U.S. Marine Mammal Commission Reference Books Reference Articles Information Sheets and Packets Sea Grant Programs ... Teaching Materials What is marine mammal science? There are about 100 species of aquatic or marine mammals that depend on fresh water or the ocean for part or all of their life. These species include pinnipeds, which are seals, sea lions, fur seals and walrus; cetaceans, which are baleen and toothed whales, ocean and river dolphins, and porpoises; sirenians, which are manatees and dugongs; and some carnivores, such as sea otters and polar bears. Marine mammal scientists try to understand these animals' genetic, systematic, and evolutionary relationships; population structure; community dynamics; anatomy and physiology; behavior and sensory abilities; parasites and diseases; geographic and microhabitat distributions; ecology; management; and conservation.
