Marine Biology: general information Marine biology is the study of organisms living in the seas. This science integrates numerous disciplines such as ecology, ethology, classical and ultrastructural morphology, biochemistry and molecular biology. The goals pursued by marine biologists are cultural and social. The marine biologist deciphers the multiple ways of life of the marine organisms as well as the interactions they have together and with their environment. He studies the impacts of human activities on the seas (fisheries, industrial and domestic activities, metallic and organic pollutions) and gives the solutions for solving those that are subversive for the environment. The Marine Biology Laboratory of the University of Mons is linked to the ones of the Free University of Brussels and the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve which, together, form the "Centre Interuniversitaire de Biologie Marine" (CIBIM). Directed by Prof. Michel Jangoux since its origin, the researches of the laboratory of Mons deal with the biology of many invertebrates, especially the echinoderms Fields of researches developped at the University of Mons are:
Symbioses and coevolution

modified from Singer, 1921 About this time, however, observations of natural phenomena related to the seas and oceans began to be written down. Herodotus, around 450 BC, wrote of the regular tides in the Persian Gulf, the deposition of silt in the Nile Delta, and uses the term "Atlantic" for the first time to describe the western seas. In the fourth century, the Phocaean colonists of Massila (Marseilles), sent the Greek astronomer Pytheas on a voyage out of the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar), where he traveled to Britain, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. He describes conditions in a distant far northern sea, which may have been in the Arctic (he describes it as having a 24 hour day at the summer solstice), as thick and gelatinous like a jellyfish (these waters are at times thick with gelatinous organisms of various kinds). " I found no basis prepared; no models to copy... Mine is the first step, and therefore a small one, though worked out with much thought and hard labor. It must be looked at as a first step and judged with indulgence."

Marine organisms may be classified (according to their mode of life) as nektonic, planktonic, or benthic. Nektonic animals are those that swim and migrate freely, e.g., adult fishes whales , and squid . Planktonic organisms, usually very small or microscopic, have little or no power of locomotion and merely drift or float in the water. Benthic organisms live on the sea bottom and include sessile forms (e.g., sponges oysters , and corals ), creeping organisms (e.g., crabs and snails ), and burrowing animals (e.g., many clams and worms ). Seafloor areas called hydrothermal vents , with giant tube worms and many other unusual life forms, have been intensively studied by marine biologists in recent years. The distribution of marine organisms depends on the chemical and physical properties of seawater (temperature, salinity, and dissolved nutrients), on ocean currents (which carry oxygen to subsurface waters and disperse nutrients, wastes, spores, eggs, larvae, and plankton), and on penetration of light. Photosynthetic organisms (plants, algae, and cyanobacteria), the primary sources of food, exist only in the photic, or euphotic, zone (to a depth of about 300 ft/90 m), where light is sufficient for

GENERAL ECOLOGY an introduction Index ECOLOGY - The science that treats the spectrum of interrelationships existing between organisms and their environment and among groups of organisms. Ecology is the science that is concerned with how individual organisms and populations of organisms live together and with their environmental surroundings. The reason environmentalism and ecology get mixed up in the media is that the scientific basis of an endangered species problems come from studies ecologists have conducted determining the ecological relationship between the species and its deteriorating environmental conditions. The environmentalists use these studies as the backbone for reasons to protect and preserve our natural environments. GENERAL ECOLOGY- basics and definitions Basics of ecological understanding.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Marine biology is the study of animal and plant life within saltwater ecosystems . Given that in biology many phyla families and genera have some species that live in the sea and others that live on land, marine biology deals with those species in which life is spent only (or mainly) in the water, thus its classification is based on the environment rather than on taxonomy Table of contents 1 Overview 2 Microscopic life 3 Plant life 4 Other sea life ... edit
    Overview
Marine biology covers a great deal, from the microscopic plankton (with phytoplankton hugely important as the primary producers of the sea), to the huge cetaceans (or whale). A large (exactly how large is unknown at this point) porportion of all life on earth is contained in the oceans. Including many species that are economically important to humans, including the food fishes . It is also becoming understood that the well being of marine organisms and non ocean dwelling organisms is linked in some very fundamental ways. edit
