Programs with Other Departments and Units Undergraduate Marine Biology The University of Delaware is one of the country's major centers for research and teaching in the marine sciences. The Campus of the University's College of Marine Studies, located at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, is the site for many of its marine related courses and research programs. Beach, rocky intertidal and tide-marsh habitats exist within a few miles of the Marine Studies laboratories. A sophisticated running sea water system supports laboratory studies associated with research and courses. Students have access to research vessels ranging from small boats used along the bay shore to the Cape Henlopen, a 120 ft. offshore oceanographic vessel. Scientific inquiry in marine biology is conducted by a variety of specialists with advanced training in biology (zoology, botany, and microbiology), oceanography, fisheries, mariculture, medicine, pharmacology, etc. Since virtually all career opportunities in marine biology require a graduate degree, the faculty of the University of Delaware strongly urge interested undergraduates to do the following: Take electives related to your interest in marine biology. Since the undergraduate B.A. degree in Biological Sciences requires you to take some elective courses in biology, you may wish to enroll in such marine-oriented courses as BISC 630 Ichthyology, BISC 660 Environmental Physiology; or one of the 6 Marine Studies courses accepted for biology major credit.

The AP Biology course seeks to meet the objectives of the general biology course at the college level. Topics covered include: cell biology, energetics, genetics, the diversity of life, biology of plants, biology of animals, evolution and organisms in nature; students will increase their understanding of the means by which biological information is collected, how it is interpreted, and how one formulates hypotheses from available data and makes further predictions. Students will gain an understanding that science is a human endeavor with social consequences. The course uses weekly labs and readings in various scientific articles and books to augment the class text. The course is intended to give those students continuing in the sciences, as well as those desiring advanced study in biology, a thorough preparation for the Advanced Placement Examination. Note Well: AP science students must perform at the college level. Therefore, the Science Department recommends that students complete the basic core courses (Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology) before enrolling in an AP science course. Simultaneous enrollment in an AP course and a fourth core course is acceptable, but must first be approved by the department chairs.

CAREERS IN MARINE BIOLOGY: OUTLOOKS The Southwest Fisheries Science Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service in La Jolla, California, often gets requests for information on marine biology careers. The following was prepared in answer to the most frequently asked questions. WHAT DOES A MARINE BIOLOGIST/SCIENTIST DO? Although many people today are familiar with the term "marine biologist," most don't realize that, in reality, the job title of marine biologist rarely exists. The term is actually used for many disciplines and jobs in the marine sciences which deal with the study of marine life, not just for those which deal with the physical properties of the seathough many biologists study both. So a marine biologist might be a biological technician, ichthyologist, fishery biologist, marine mammalogist, microbiologist, systems analyst, or a mathematician. Even economists and sociologists, who deal with living marine resource issues, are found within the so-called field of marine biology. In addition, other marine scientists concern themselves exclusively with the physical and chemical aspects of the sea, such as physicists, hydrologists, and physical oceanographers. BIOLOGY PROGRAMME
SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCE PROGRAMME The Sport and Exercise Science Programme begins to diverge from the Biology courses in year two by providing specialist modules in human anatomy, physiology and nutrition. Psychology and Management are also studied. There are four Sport and Exercise degrees offering the possibilities for students to study for a dedicated degree or supplement their curriculum with additional Psychology, Management or Biology modules according to preference.
APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY
The degree in Applied Psychology is a new initiative, focusing on the biological aspects of the subject and covering the fundamental disciplines of cognitive and social psychology, including the human mind, behaviour, personality and intelligence. The course interacts with the Sport and Exercise Programme in the areas of human performance and, in later years, it includes modules in Occupational Health, Clinical Health and Sports Psychology.
FLEXIBILITY
The School structure in the University provides unique opportunities for experimenting with diverse modules and for transferring between courses and Programmes as you become familiar with new disciplines and skills. While we make every attempt to accommodate such course changes, the opportunities become more restricted as degrees become specialised in later years.
