This page is a guide to taught courses in the UK in the area of marine biology, both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are listed. Go to the guide on: Undergraduate Degrees Postgraduate Courses GUIDE TO UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES The standard undergraduate Marine Biology BSc degree in the UK has the UCAS code of C160, and there are a wide range of Universities which run this course, along with Joint Honours degrees with other subjects such as Oceanography, Zoology, Chemistry and so on. If an applicant fails to get on the pure Marine Biology BSc, the University may offer them a place on a Joint Honours degree instead. For league tables and ratings of the Universities and courses in this area, as well as all others, you can usually refer to occasional publications such as those in The Times 'Good University Guide ', or the The Guardians' University League Tables , and other newspapers, particularly around March - June time when students are making final decisions about which course they will do and where. Though these rankings often leave much to be desired in what they actually assess. I have tried to find Universities which run a Marine Biology or similar degree so that it is easier to browse the University websites of the places you might want to study at, these are below. The

The emphasis is on basic principles that help us to understand the processes that shape life in marine environments. The marine biology major is a demanding program that offers a B.S. degree and requires several more courses than the general biology B.A. major. Alternatively, students can opt for the general biology major and choose a marine biology concentration.

Meeting the expectations in fundamental chemistry and biology, the major works toward imparting a comprehensive understanding of the natural environment and phenomena, and producing graduates who are able to demonstrate a future oriented resourcefulness.
The Department of Chemistry, Biology and Marine Science is a department composed of many unique characteristics that carries out educational research in areas including chemistry, biology, oceanography, research on marine biology, and the marine environment and coral reefs.
First year students, as is the case in other departments, take general education courses and introductory specialised courses. Through basic seminars and faculty of science general education courses offered by the department, students conduct research in small classes in their respective chemistry and biology laboratories.
The second year of the course is separated into these two fields and students receive education in accordance with the curriculum of the course they have chosen. Should the number of students wishing to enter a particular field (either chemistry or biology) exceed the capacity, first year results will be taken into consideration.
  • Cell and Functional Biology
This section conducts research and education of basic biology, but focuses on organisms living on islands, in mangroves and coral reef areas. The goal is to understand the general principle of life as well as the mechanisms by which diversity of life is created and maintained. Currently, research and education is conducted on developmental biology, morphology, genetics, cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology.

Welcome to the School of Ocean Sciences, one of the largest university Marine Science departments in Europe, a multi-disciplinary department located on the shores of the Menai Strait, North Wales, UK.
"Understanding the oceans constitutes a major challenge for modern science. Even after a hundred years of intense study, the oceans remain under-explored, and our knowledge of many of the key-processes occuring within them is fragmentary.
At Bangor we are justly proud of our long-established tradition of excellence in research and teaching in marine science. The School of Ocean Science is a leading international research institution, and one of the largest teaching departments in Europe. We have well-resourced groups in the principal disciplines of biology, chemistry, geology and physics. However, our emphasis on multidisciplinary research effectively ensures ready access to expertise in all aspects of marine science."

Credit: Ron Sangha AquaFacts: Career as a Marine Biologist Marine biology includes a vast field of knowledge. Only by getting started will you decide which direction your studies will take you as you work through high school, college and/or university. It is a good idea to take all the science courses available in high school and in your first years at university. These will include biology, botany, chemistry, ecology, fish biology, marine mammalogy and conservation courses. It will take a minimum of four years to get your Bachelor of Science degree. It will take 2-5 more years to get your Masters or Doctoral degree.
During your university years it is critical that you get experience working both in the lab and in the field. Summer and weekend jobs in biology will greatly aid you in creating a strong resume when pursuing a job following graduation. You should consider working or volunteering at a Provincial Fish and Wildlife branch; with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans; or with a veterinarian, retail fish store, aquarium or zoo, wildlife rescue centre, or natural history group in your local area if possible.

Lower division biology includes zoology, botany, ecology, genetics, physiology and biochemistry. In the upper division, students take one course from each of the areas of molecular biology, cell organism function, organismal diversity and populations. The remaining three upper division major courses are chosen from a wide variety of electives. Majors also take laboratories with four of their seven upper division biology courses. For this purpose, the Biology Department has eight laboratories equipped for experimentation to support both lower and upper division biology courses. The Biology Department has a field station in Baja California which supports a summer course on the marine ecology of that area. Summer courses are also offered in Africa and Honduras, respectively in mammalogy and marine biology. Along with acquiring knowledge of fundamental areas of biology, students will also sharpen their skills in critical thinking and problem solving and learn to research, communicate, and present scientific information. Each senior biology major takes a seminar in which he or she carries out library and/or laboratory research under the guidance of one of the faculty and presents his/her findings.

Biology, Marine Biology and Environmental Science Majors
Biology, marine biology, and environmental science majors investigate the interconnected processes that shape the living world. The Department of Biology, Marine Biology and Environmental Science is housed in a large, new building offering modern teaching and research laboratories, a spacious wet-lab with running seawater, several greenhouses and state-of-the-art instrumentation for cell and molecular biology. The Department offers the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in biology, marine biology, and environmental science. Minors are also offered in biology, environmental biology, environmental science and horticulture. The Department has a very active program for undergraduate research, and students are encouraged to join an ongoing project as early as their first year.
    Biology
Since the life sciences are increasingly interdisciplinary, biology majors can take a wide range of courses in the following general areas: cell and molecular biology; microbiology; physiology and developmental biology; animal behavior; botany/horticulture; and ecology. Students prepare for graduate study and careers in these fields, as well as the health sciences, through lectures and labs, independent research and internships. Any student who wishes to pursue a career in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine should contact his/her advisor immediately to ensure appropriate course planning. Research is an integral part of the biology curriculum, and biology majors are encouraged to participate in ongoing research in areas that include: evolutionary genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, neurobiology and ecology.
