The Queen's University of Belfast School of Biology and Biochemistry - Teaching Head of School : Professor W.I. Montgomery Marine Biology OVER SEVENTY PER CENT of the Earth's surface is covered by seawater and all known phyla are believed to have originated in the sea or have marine representatives. Marine Biology is a multidisciplinary field of study which links Biology and the predominantly physico-chemical discipline of Oceanography. Marine organisms and processes have been studied at Queen's for over 100 years and the father of modern biological oceanography, Charles Wyville Thompson, held the chair in Natural History and Geology at Queen's between 1860 and 1870. At the present time, over 20 biologists are involved in Marine Biology and the University has established an international reputation in this field. Marine Biology Marine biological research exploits all the new technologies and plays a lead role in their development and exploitation. At Queen's, this work ranges from coastal to deep ocean studies and is supported by the Portaferry Marine Laboratory (right), which includes a Centre for marine resources and aquaculture (C-Mar) and student accomodation. There are opportunities to participate in national and international research cruises. Marine Biology is a new degree programme at Queen's and aims to involve the expertise at the University to provide training in this area, with the emphasis on the understanding of biodiversity in the marine environment in the broadest sense, for the benefit of human communities locally and internationally.

7NF7 MARINE BIOLOGY
20 credits at Level 1
Starting January 2002 10 week Internet based course followed by 1 week residential field course
The overall aim of this course is to familiarise students with the basic principles that rule life in the ocean and provide an understanding of the variety of marine ecosystems found throughout the world. By examining the physical and chemical conditions organisms experience in different oceanographic regions we will learn how marine organisms are adapted to the intertidal zone, the open ocean, the deep sea, coral reefs and polar seas. The course will be taught by providing lecture material on the world-wide web (WWW). This material will be supported by web-based asynchronous conferencing. A one week residential field course in Scotland will then be held to put theory into practice. Students are required to have access to the WWW and have email* and must attend field course.* All students are given free access to on-campus computing facilities. **Includes accommodation fee for field course.

Marine Biology Option
  • Why does Bloomsburg University offer a Bachelor's Degree in Biology with a Marine Biology Option and not simply a Marine Biology Degree?
The Marine Biology Program at Bloomsburg University is designed to provide maximum career flexibility. The Program is built around a solid core of courses in the fundamentals of biology. Granting the degree in Biology communicates that the student has all the preparation that any generic biology program would provide. Granting a specialization in Marine Biology communicates that the student has additional focused preparation in the marine sciences. That students are broadly trained in fundamentals, as well as being specifically trained, is of crucial importance to potential employers, graduate schools, and professional schools.
  • How much time will I spend at the Marine Science Center in Virginia?
Courses in Marine Science are offered during the summer, when students have the flexibility to devote their full attention to detailed studies of the oceans, and when it is more pleasant to be in the water. Students in the Marine Biology Option are required to spend the equivalent of one summer semester at the Marine Science Center. Most students spend more. The remainder of the time is spent at the main campus of Bloomsburg University taking supportive classes in the sciences, and general education classes.
  • What special opportunities are available to students in the Marine Biology Option at Bloomsburg University?
