Academic Programs Opportunities Inside and Outside the Classroom Occidental's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean offers students a living laboratory for studying Marine Biology at the College. Beaches, intertidal areas, marinas and port facilities are about a one-hour-drive from the college campus. Our marine program is part of the Southern California Marine Institute (SCMI), which is a consortium of 10 local colleges and universities that pool their resources to promote the study of the near shore environment. Each summer we offer a five-week course in marine biology to undergraduates and high school seniors that carries full college credit. Oxy undergraduates select from biology courses and they are also encouraged to get involved in extracurricular activities with faculty and working professionals.

Marine biology is the study of the living world in the sea, from the simple molecules that support life to the complex interactions between populations of many species. The range of specialty areas is huge. There are marine biologists who study the basic biochemistry of marine organisms, for example, while others study the growth or behaviour of individual plants or animals. Some adopt an even larger perspective and study how entire marine ecosystems function. Marine biologists are currently involved in projects as diverse as:
  • do Marine Protected Areas conserve local biodiversity?

BACKGROUND
The Institute of Marine Biology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1967. At the time of the WTEC visit, this organization employed 450 persons (300 research staff and 140-150 engineers and technicians). Within the Institute there are 20 laboratories and an auxiliary services group. In addition, there are four field stations and the Far East State Marine Reserve. Two smaller research vessels support seagoing projects. In addition to the research ships, the institute conducts many dives to collect specimens and to do in situ research tasks. Most of the scientists are divers.

1). I am a high school student. How should I prepare for studying marine biology in college? The subject area courses most important in this curriculum are Biology, Chemistry, Math and English. It is also important to have computer skills. We encourage you to obtain first hand experience in marine biology and research by doing activities such as: science fair projects, visiting the ocean, enrolling in summer marine studies camps, volunteering at an aquarium, or even learning marine skills such as small boat handling or scuba diving. 2).I am a second year college student changing majors. I would like to be in marine biology, but I have no background in math or science. What do your recommend I do? First, take a look at the first two years of the curriculum for this degree. You will need to catch up, either at the college where you are currently enrolled or by transferring to a University of Hawaii campus. The latter option would insure the transferability of your coursework and put you in position to learn more about the ocean through field trips and activities associated with your introductory courses and those sponsored by the UH Marine Option Program. You may even be able to secure marine-related student employment.

Teen Tours and Travel Camps Description: Fascinated with the underwater world or interested in becoming a marine biologist? The island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas offers a unique aquatic world for diving and study. Based at the Island School , the reef system and shallow banks of this island are your classrooms. Under the instruction of professional marine biologists, the curriculum is designed to anchor traditional learning with immediate real-world application and hands-on experience. This accredited program focuses on the intricate ways entire reef systems come together to form beautiful yet fragile environments. Our studies provide a base for our research, which ranges from building, launching and surveying artificial reefs balls for the Bahamian government to conducting conch surveys for an ongoing study. Formal presentations, debates, informal discussions and dinnertime chats get us thinking about a myriad of topics, such as animals in captivity, marine parks and coral bleaching. Participants engage in comprehensive preparation before dives, field studies and lab work. The combination of dive training, field experiments, discussion lectures and marine surveys qualifies this course for high school and/or college credit.

THE GREAT OCEAN RESCUE
Just last week I received notification that my South Carolina EIA The Great Ocean Rescue . Lesson plans and activities which challenge G/T students are part of the package. Students will become scientists and look for trouble/danger. They will work in cooperative teams with scientific experts to travel the ocean floor, sea coasts, and coral reefs on their Great Ocean Rescue. Information from videodiscs and student books will be analyzed to solve problems. Because each student has unique "expert" materials, they can succeed only by sharing their knowledge and ideas. The students will learn valuable content while developing excellent research skills. Warm-up Activities
  • Students will complete mazes on laminated activity cards of fish, shells, turtles, and sharks. Students will solve letter, number, and picture codes about the ocean. They will also develop their own codes for the class to share and to compile in a booklet.
  • Language Arts Activities
  • Students will write and illustrate a booklet of undersea expressions. (This can be done as computer generated stacks). There should be only one expression per page and may include the following expressions as well as original ones:

A special spring session program of Gannon University in cooperation with the Bahamian Field Studies Station of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. Course: Tropical Marine Biology BIOL 383 2 Undergraduate Credits
    Description of Course Activities
The program activities will consist of ecological field work in characteristic tropical ecosystems, identification of important fauna and flora, and laboratory investigations of coral reef organisms. Ecosystems that will be studied include coral reefs, mangroves, inland lakes, turtle grass beds, sandy beaches, dunes, cays, caves, tidal pools, tidal flats, and shrubland. Initial field trips will concentrate on the observation and identification of common organisms, so that the students may become familiar with the dominant biota and develop observational skills. Later trips will involve measurements of abiotic parameters, and determination of community structure to learn how abiotic and biotic components interrelate. Surveys will be made of plankton and interstitial fauna where applicable. Specific field trips for observing birds and other vertebrates will be included. Some evenings will be devoted to lectures, slides, and films. During this time students will receive background information on tropical marine flora and fauna, coral reef ecology, island geology, and other appropriate topics. Laboratory time will be spent examining preserved specimens, skeletons, and pictures of typical biota and gaining experience in identification through the use of proper keys, manuals, etc. Relevant books and papers will be assigned for reading (e.g. Kaplan, 1982
