Far below the ocean’s surface, resting on the seabed off the Portuguese coast are Spanish, Portuguese, and British ships that sank during the Age of Exploration. Through the years, this graveyard of ships has survived relatively untouched, and may now provide rich opportunities for archeological discovery. Until the recent advent of underwater technology, these historically significant sites have been unavailable for identification and study. The Age of Exploration (15th-18th centuries) is a period of great adventure and discovery, where people traveled across the oceans in search of new lands, treasures, goods and trade routes.
The story of the ill-fated Cinque Chagas is only one of hundreds of shipwrecks recorded along the Portuguese coasts. The ship set sail for Portugal from the East Indies, carrying a king’s ransom in gold, silver, and jewels. Also on board were Italian and Portuguese merchants with their own goods, and the abandoned cargoes of two other ships that wrecked off the African coast. Overloaded with cargo and passengers, with disease and starvation rampant throughout the ship, she sailed into the Azores to replenish her stock, ignoring the warnings of the dangers of pirates and renegade vessels that awaited her… The next morning she fell under attack from three British ships. The battle raged on for two days until finally, with her decks ablaze, a violent explosion sent the Chagas and her valuable cargo to the bottom of the sea. Now, a new “Age of Exploration” is resuming far beneath the ocean's surface.

The Struma Incident
Struma was one of the vessels arranged to carry the Jewish refugees from Romania’s Constansa harbor to Palestine. She was made in Britain, but carried a Panama flag. With a Bulgarian crew on board, she was actually owned by a Greek merchant named Pandelis. In 1941, right before its last journey, she was registered with the “Campania Mediteranea de Vapores Limitada” agency in Bucharest. 46 meters long, 6 meters wide, the Struma had a gross weight of about 227 tons. A very old vessel indeed! Built in 1867 in the Newcastle docks, her bottom was made of sheet iron, while the superstructure was of timber.
The Struma arrived at some miles out from Sarayburnu (Istanbul) in December 15 th 1941, carrying 769 people who have spent their last pennies to get on this vessel to escape the Holocaust. They

Mutate, Migrate, Adapt, or Die by Daniel J. Lenihan It should be no surprise to anyone involved in public archeology that the submerged lands of the Park Service have a significant cultural legacy. The marine parks come immediately to mind—"common ground" both wet and salty: Cape Cod National Seashore, the Virgin Islands, California's Point Reyes, and Florida's Biscayne National Park, to mention a few. Then, of course, there are the inland seas—our five Great Lakes. One of these parks, Michigan's Isle Royale, even had one of its historic shipwrecks used as the setting for a popular murder mystery. What we tend to have very little awareness of is the underwater world of our classic inland parks, far from the Gulf Coast or the shores of Hawaii. Few would guess that we manage almost as much submerged bottom land in Montana and Wyoming as we do in Florida (if we don't count semi-submerged places like Big Cypress and Everglades).

Answering Ankara’s Call for Help, University Researchers Locate Ancient Cargo Remains and Maybe a Turkish Atlantis Subaqueous exploration. Divers from the University of Haifa archeology team map out the site of their “dig” off Liman Tepe in Turkey.
A three-week expedition in response to Ankara University’s request for the University of Haifa’s cooperation this summer in conducting underwater explorations off Urla, a city some 35 kilometers southwest of Izmir, led to surprising discoveries. One such find might be termed the cargo remains of a 5th century BCE “bulk carrier.” Israeli and Turkish underwater explorers wade into the deep. The University’s logo is clearly visible on the oxygen tanks “At the same time we tried to understand the possible elements which are now positioned under water, whether they were originally terrestial or underwater constructions. We, at the University of Haifa’s Maritime Institute, have had plenty of experience in both fields, especially harbor constructions and underwater geological research. That’s why they called on us.” The University’s Institute of Maritime Studies and the Dept. of Maritime Civilzations have for a number of years been conducting wide-ranging coastal and underwater excavations along Israel’s northern Mediterranean shore: in the ancient harbor of Caesarea, at Tel Akko (Acre), Tel Nami, and the shipwrecks at Ma’agan Mikhael and Dor (Tantura).

A Centre on Marine Archeology is created
A Centre on Marine Archeology is being created. It is to take care for the protection, conservation and the popularization of our underwater cultural heritage. The Centre is to catalogue all submerged archeological sites on Bulgarian territory and develop expert, consulting, research and educational activity. The organization of international seminars on underwater archeology is envisaged. By creating that cultural institute, our country synchronizes its activity with the UNESCO member states and the forthcoming signing of the international convention on the conservation of underwater cultural heritage.
