The Library of Congress Map Collections Cultural Landscapes
Geography and Maps Division, Library of Congress

Search by Keyword Geographic Location Index Subject Index Creator Index This collection of Liberia maps includes twenty examples from the American Colonization Society (ACS), organized in 1817 to resettle free black Americans in West Africa. These maps show early settlements in Liberia, indigenous political subdivisions, and some of the building lots that were assigned to settlers. This on-line presentation also includes other nineteenth-century maps of Liberia: a map prepared for a book first published in the 1820's by ACS agent Jehudi Ashmun, a map showing the areas in Liberia that were ceded to the society by indigenous chiefs, and a detailed map dated 1869 by a man thought to be the black American explorer Benjamin Anderson. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

Feeders and Plastic Toxins

Some recent research has been in the news lately, concerning toxic chemicals leaching from various plastics. Many of the stories have bordered on hysteria, and some are probably urban legends. However, others seem scientifically reputable. Of particular interest to me was this paper (PDF) about laboratory rat cages, because the best hummingbird feeders are made of similar polycarbonate plastic, and one of the most effective disinfectants is bleach. I am undecided whether to stop recommending bleach or plastic feeders, but when you read about this research, please keep a few things in mind:
  • None of the studies involved hummingbirds, and they may react differently than mammals to these toxins.
  • Few hummingbirds rely on feeders for a large percentage of their food.
  • Poor feeder hygiene is probably more unhealthy than an unknown risk from toxins.
  • Most hummingbird species' populations seem to be growing, and new individual longevity records are established every year. This doesn't suggest we're killing our hummers by feeding them.
When you weigh the risks yourself, try to read the original research papers, and don't rely on third-hand accounts by TV news personalities who are not biologists or chemists. Be especially cautious of self-serving opinions from vested interests, both pro and con. If and when I learn more, I will share it here.

Westward Expansion
Colorado Migration Project
Check this out if your ancestors ever crossed into or out of Colorado. Traditionally, when one thinks of the expansion of the American West, the event most likely to come to mind is the California Gold Rush of 1849. While that profitable discovery did boost California's population by 80,000 eager prospectors, there remained an awful lot of land between the Pacific Coast and, say, St. Louis, Missouri. "Why mention St. Louis?" you might be asking. Because in actuality the young United States started exploring the vast land mass to the west from that very point and almost fifty years before those gold nuggets started hitting the pan in California. In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson sent a secret message to Congress calling for an expedition into the area west of the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. He felt that an intelligent military man with perhaps a dozen hand-picked men could successfully chart the entire route and do it on an appropriation of roughly $2,500. Jefferson's message was secret because France owned the territory in question and such an expedition would surely be considered trespassing. Then in July of the same year, Napoleon of France, in a surprise move, offered the whole Louisiana Territory to the United States for $15,000,000. America accepted and overnight the United States grew by about one million square miles, from the Mississippi to the Rockies and from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada.

THE AMERICAN GRIZZLY BEAR
Note: The author of this site, James Musgrove, passed away on August 31, 2002 while hiking in Yoho National Park, B.C. He was a great lover of the outdoors and passionate about grizzly bear protection. This site will be maintained by his wife, Françoise, and daughters, Kristen and Claudine. Please e-mail any questions or comments you have regarding this site or grizzly bear conservation to: francoisemusgrove@worldnet.att.net Protect Grizzly Bear Habitat! This web site is intended to provide information on the current status of the American Grizzly Bear. Today, the grizzly bear population in the lower forty-eight states numbers about 1,000reduced from an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 before the West was settled. Grizzly bear habitat has dwindled to less than 2% of what it once was. Fragmented zones of existence are all that remain for the American Grizzly Bear. Destruction and degradation of grizzly bear habitat and human-caused mortality are the greatest threats to the continued existence of the grizzly bear in the lower forty-eight. Existing grizzly bear habitat must be protected, depleted grizzly bear habitat restored, and fragmented grizzly bear recovery zones connected by corridors if the American Grizzly Bear is to "recover".
