Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps Strategic maps of Germany from WWII Other Special Collections Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are very detailed maps of built-up areas of cities and towns showing the configuration, construction, and use of individual buildings. These maps, created by the Sanborn Map Company, were used by fire insurance under writers to set fire insurance rates from 1867 until 1950. Until about 1910, entirely new sets of maps were produced periodically for each city or town. Map Links: Map Library Media Home QEII Home Map Library Collection Development Policy The purpose of the general collection development policy of the Map Library is to provide a well-rounded collection of world-wide coverage comprised of general and thematic, small and large scale maps; national, provincial or state, regional, and thematic atlases; and related reference materials. In addition, as in the case of any modern University, it is essential for there to be special areas of emphasis because of the particular instructional and research needs of the University Community. The emphasis of this collection is on maps of Newfoundland, Canada, and the oceans around Newfoundland. The intensive collection of maps of Newfoundland should be carried out in cooperation with the Centre for Newfoundland Studies which currently houses the pre-1900 maps, as well as rare atlases. Because of the long-standing and still growing interest within the University in marine biology, oceanography, ocean engineering and other ocean related specialities, hydrographic, bathymetric, climatic, geologic, biogeographic and other marine related maps and charts are an important thematic area of concentration. In addition to the geographic areas of emphasis mentioned previously, attention must be paid to collecting cartographic materials relating to the rest of North America, especially New England, and Western Europe, especially Great Britain and the coastal areas of the Continent because of the interests of departments such as Geography, History, Geology, Engineering, and Biology.

Its 410,000 maps, 10,000 air photos, 2000 books, and hundreds of gigabytes of spatial data constitute a rich source of information for scholars and other users. The following pages contain a brief guide to the Collection. Collection Scope The University of Chicago Map Collection has particularly strong holdings in three areas: (1) topographic maps; (2) urban maps; and (3) geology maps. (1) Topographic Maps (2) Urban Maps Urban studies have always been a research concern at the University of Chicago, and the Map Collection has supported such research by acquiring urban maps from all periods for all parts of the world. Its holdings of 18th-, 19th-, and early 20th-century maps of European and American cities are particularly noteworthy. Recently, the historical urban-map collection has been enriched considerably by the systematic acquisition of facsimile sets of early maps of European cities and Soviet military urban maps of cities all over the Eastern Hemisphere. In addition to historical maps, the Collection holds contemporary maps of cities and towns in all countries, including numerous thematic maps (e.g., planning maps and transit maps). Its Chicago collection is respectable. (3) Geology Maps The Collection holds geology maps of all types. Most continents, countries, and states are covered by at least small-scale maps. The Collection is a depository for geology maps published by the United States Geological Survey and the major geological surveys of Canada, Australia, South Africa, and several U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The Collection acquired numerous maps from Crerar Library when the latter merged with the University of Chicago Library. The Crerar legacy includes hundreds of 19th-century geology and mining maps. These will probably have little interest for modern geophysicists but furnish an extraordinary record of the history of geological thought.
