SOCIAL STUDIES
World History and Cultures Explore the Heritage of Indigenous Peoples The Inuit people survived the frozen Arctic north for centuries through a modest hunting and trapping lifestyle. Today, some Inuit writers have employed the most modern of technologies, the Internet, to tell about their culture and history. You can read about Nunavut, the lands inhabited by Inuit ancestors that in 1999 became a separate territory in Canada, and even see a map of it. Like the Inuit, the Sami people of Scandinavia have sought to regain land upon which their ancestors lived. In their Web site, these descendants of Europe's far north write of a history music From the far north, travel to sub-Saharan Africa to learn about the history and art of the Yoruba . These semi-independent peoples lived in highly complex kingdoms , but their way of life was vastly changed after many of their people were captured for the slave trade to the Western Hemisphere. By looking at their art and artifacts , you can see how the beliefs and ways of the Yoruba have been passed on until today.

    The Health of Indigenous Peoples:
    A Concern for Nursing
As we reach mid point in the Decade of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (1994 –2003), ICN takes this closer look at the health status of indigenous peoples. There are more than 300 million indigenous peoples in the world, on every continent and representing many cultures. However, indigenous peoples are over represented among the world’s vulnerable groups, suffering low incomes, living in poor conditions, and lacking adequate access to employment, education, safe water, food and health care services. Although epidemiological data is scanty, available morbidity and mortality data point to the following health impacts on indigenous peoples:
    • Life expectancy at birth is 10 to 20 years less than for the overall population in a country Infant mortality rates are 1.5 to 3 times greater than the national average

    INTRO...
The Maori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa/New Zealand. A primary step in the process of inculturation is the working out of an indigenous theology, in this case, a Maori theology. A key question in accepting an indigenous theology is the recognition that indigenous peoples have themselves been given their own Revelation.
    INCULTURATION
Inculturation is a theological term taken from two words, enculturation and Incarnation. Enculturation is the taking on of a culture. Incarnation is a theological term used to express God's becoming man, Jesus taking on a human nature. Inculturation signifies the taking on of a particular human culture by Jesus. Just as he became a Jew so he becomes a member of another race, taking on their particular culture. As the Word was made flesh becoming a Jew, so "the Word is made flesh", becoming a member of another race. The Gospels themselves provide the guidelines for this process.
    MAORI
Maori culture and Maori religion, before European colonisation, were imtimately connected, so as a basis for an inculturation of Jesus as Maori I have sought to understand Maori culture and Maori religion as it is lived today, as it was at the time of colonisation and, as far as possible, as it was before colonization. The Maori speak of three baskets of knowledge , the knowledge that comes through the senses, the knowledge which is the understanding of what we perceive through the senses, and finally and most importantly, the knowledge which is the experience of our oneness with people, with creation and with Io, God.

Aotearoa: Underlying Causes of Deforestation analysed at Indigenous Peoples Workshop The weekend of the 21st and 22nd of September PIPEC (Pacific Indigenous People's Environment Coalition) held a workshop on the Underlying Causes of Deforestation and Forest Degradation. The workshop was opened by the new Conservation Minister for New Zealand, Chris Carter, and had representatives from most of the Pacific nations' communities here in Aotearoa, along with Maori representation. Nearly all of the Pacific academics working in the tertiary sector attended, as did a representative of Siosiomaga Society from Samoa. There were four case studies presented; Aotearoa, Samoa, Soloman Islands and Tonga and the Pacific children were represented by speeches on the importance of forests in our lives by school children in the 10 to 13 year old age group. For most of us, this was by far the most moving part of the workshop as we got to see the next generation of forest activists in action. (many for the very first time) The second day of the conference saw a facilitated brainstorm on Pan-Pacific underlying causes, hoping to draw out potential solutions and major causes and actors. Given that this was an Indigenous workshop, it is not surprising that most of the solutions focused around political leadership, policy and will. Education and capacity building of Indigenous Peoples was identified as being the single biggest potential solution and this was seen within the context of building true independence.
