Naval Museum
Imagine enemy submarines lurking in wait for helpless merchant ships right off the coast of Canada. Also imagine Canada having a naval force consisting of over 100,000 men and women. These are the memories of a world at war. A WWII Corvette Rises in a heavy sea. It was during these tumultuous times that so many young prairie men from towns like Carmen, Portage, The Pas and Dauphin went out to join the navy. Nobody could predict the connection between the flat prairies and a call to the sea, but once the war was over it was undeniable. Many Manitobans served their country through naval service. The goal of the Naval Museum of Manitoba is to promote the history of Canada's Navy, especially as it pertains to those Manitobans who have served with the Navy. The Naval Museum captures a moment in history, remembering the lifestyle, sense of duty and patriotism of Canadian sailors during times of peace and war. In creating this archive, many Manitobans have served their community by donating artifacts, time and energy to a successful effort.

The Group recommended that regulatory and operational responsibilities should be held by two independent organizations to avoid any perception of conflict. The MGCC's licensing, registration, policy advisory and regulatory roles are independent from the operational and marketing responsibilities carried out by the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation (MLC). The establishment of the MGCC is one of the most recent legislative and regulatory shifts in Manitoba's gaming environment. However, today's environment, which includes casinos, VLTs, lotteries and charitable gaming activities is the result of an evolution that began with amendments to the Criminal Code of Canada in the late 1960's. The following overview provides an historical perspective on the development of gaming in Manitoba.
Timeline of Gaming in Manitoba
Amendments to the Criminal Code legalize gaming activities throughout Canada. These amendments give the provinces authority to operate lottery schemes and casinos, as well as license charitable and religious organizations to conduct specified lottery schemes.

67. Art Gallery Of Southwestern Manitoba - History
primarily interested in art appreciation, informal study of art history and painting evolutionin the development of the visual arts in Southwestern manitoba.
http://www.agsm.ca/about.html
AGSM History The AGSM has a very proud history that is not commonly known. It’s earliest inception was within Brandon College (a pioneer privately funded Baptist institution) which taught art courses to students, faculty and the community from 1890 through 1907. At that time music, drama and visual arts were offered. Due to financial constraints the visual arts were discontinued. The Brandon Art Club (1907 – 1959) was formed when the College discontinued its arts program. It was comprised of an active, community based amateur membership who were primarily interested in art appreciation, informal study of art history and painting/sketching and exhibiting their own work. At that time members and community citizens also collected works of art by the then nationally known contemporary artists for their homes. In 1959 the Brandon Allied Arts Council was formed to broaden the Art Club’s offerings into studio activity involving several visual art and craft disciplines. They found a permanent home at the “Welcome Inn” where their studios were located. In 1984 the Allied Arts Council moved to the present location on Princess Avenue. The club grew in strength and carried on until 1989 when the AGSM was formed. The AGSM became a natural evolution in the development of the visual arts in Southwestern Manitoba. While continuing the extensive Allied Arts Council studio program, a new contemporary art gallery was formed. For the first time there became an emphasis in exhibit creation, in presenting shows of a contemporary nature and in the profiling of highly talented Manitoba visual artists.

Introduction
The history of the electrical industry in Manitoba tells the story of expediency, foresight and public responsibility. It began over a century ago during the pioneer days of street lighting and street railway transportation in Winnipeg. Before long, as the novelty of the new energy source gave way to necessity, other large communities in the province wanted the benefits that electricity would bring. They received electrical service, but often at very high costs.

At the time, the Manitoba Free Press reported "The (electric) lamp in front of the Davis Hotel is quite an institution. It looks well and guides the weary traveller to a haven of rest, billiards and hot drinks, and lights up the streets probably more than the lamp of the newly incorporated gas company will for centuries to come." History Morris, Man, Town, pop 1645 (1996c), 1616 (1991c), 1613 (1986c), area 5.83 km2, in 1883, is located at the confluence of the Red and Morris rivers, 55 km S of Winnipeg. Originally known as Scratching River, Morris was named in honour of Alexander Morris The Rivers The Red and Morris rivers have greatly affected the town, especially during floods in l950, 1966 and 1979. On March 31, 1966, the Premier of Manitoba, Duff Roblin, called a flood meeting in Morris, where he and his Ministers personally informed the public of what to expect and what measures to take. The towns of Morris, St. Jean and Emerson began moving earth, hastily constructing ring dykes. On Easter Monday, 1966, due to the efforts of the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) , local help, and a contingent of Canadian Army Engineers, the dyke which was starting to shift due to the high waves and nearly 20 feet of water pushing against it at the lowest place was saved. Bulldozers were braced against the base of the dyke on the dry side and a boom of hydro poles on the wet side, plus added weight to the top of the sandbags, the dyke held. A Permanent dyke has been erected around the Town of Morris and we were safe during the "Flood of the Century" in 1997.

74. History Of Manitoba's Credit Union
The first credit union in manitoba was a caisse populaire, organized in1937 by Father Benoit in the French farming community of St. Malo.
http://www.creditunion.mb.ca/cu_info/history.htm
Alfonse Desjardins The first credit union in North America was organized in 1900 by a Canadian journalist and legislative reporter, Alfonse Desjardins, in Levis, Quebec. Desjardins got his ideas of financial co-operatives - of people pooling resources for their mutual benefit - from Europe, where one of the first credit societies was founded in 1852 by Friedrich Wilhelm Rafeissen, the mayor of Flammersfeld, Germany. Rafeissen was distressed at the near-starvation conditions endured by local farmers and townspeople, who were losing their homes and livestock to moneylenders who charged exorbitant interest rates. Dejardins saw that credit unions offered a way out. The first credit union in Manitoba was a caisse populaire, organized in 1937 by Father Benoit in the French farming community of St. Malo. Its citizens, like most farmers on the continent, were suffering during the Great Depression; Father Benoit brought them together to help each other financially. The first loan to a member — for $56.50, repaid in $2 monthly installments — financed the purchase of a cream separator. Seven months later in the same year, Norwood Credit Union was founded in Winnipeg. (The oldest existing credit unions in the province are Lowe Farm and The Pool, both founded in 1938.)

http://www.manitobachiefs.com/education/efa/efa/history2.html
First Nations History
There are five First Nation groups in Manitoba. These are the Cree, Ojibway, Dakota, Ojibway-Cree, and Dene. The five groups have distinct territories. The Cree are in the northern part of Manitoba and the Ojibway are in the southern area. The Dakota are primarily in the southwestern region and the Dene are in the northwestern region while the Ojibway-Cree are situated in the northeastern section of Manitoba.
The five First Nations are part of three linguistic groups. The Dene are part of the Athapaskan group which extends from the northern portion of western provinces to the territories. The Dene are also related to the Apache and Navajo peoples in the southwestern United States. The Athapaskan peoples speak similar languages and some of the key words are very similar.
The Dakota are part of the Siouan group which live primarily in the southern regions of western provinces and throughout the north central parts of the United States. The Cree, Ojibway and Ojibway-Cree are part of the largest linguistic grouping in North America - the Algonquian peoples. The Algonquian peoples live in all of the Canadian provinces and northern and northeastern parts of the States. There are also some Algonquian people living in California and Mexico.
The Cree territory covers some of the northern parts of the central States, parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec while the Ojibway-Cree are primarily in the north-western part of Ontario and north-eastern corner of Manitoba

Our History E. J. B. Salter appointed District Secretary for the Western Auxiliary of the Bible Society in 1904, exemplified the kind of commitment and perseverance required to advance the Bible cause in Western Canada. The following is an except from one of his reports. (Source: A History Of The Canadian Bible Society by Gerald E. Benson with Kenneth G. McMillan. pp.51,52) One winter night, after holding a meeting in Estevan, I traveled over the whole town to secure a place of shelter, but found none. I crawled into an implement shed and lay down. At 1:00 o'clock in the morning, I awoke so stiff that I could hardly move sufficiently to get circulation but, after much effort, I made my way to the railway station to wait till a train came along. I found ten men stretched out on the floor and benches. A good fire was blazing in the Cannon stove, which derives its name from its shape. There was only room enough to stand. To go into the cold again was unthinkable. Wearing a heavy winter coat which I could not remove, I stood till morning. The only standing place was uncomfortably near the stove and I was sleepy almost beyond endurance. About 5:30 a.m. a train arrived going north and I boarded it and fell asleep.
