Protected Areas and the Regional Planning Imperative in North America
Edited by Gordon Nelson, J.C. Day, Lucy M. Sportza, James Loucky, and Carlos Vasquez
Regional planning is imperative if North America has any hope of retaining continental biodiversity. This timely collection of essays presents new protected areas theory, method, and practice and reinforces this theme of regional planning. With a North American focus, these essays consider the history, ecology, policy, and planning of protected areas while raising awareness of their contribution to society. Contemporary understandings of protected areas are challenged as the book forces readers to move from a mentality of the past that saw protected areas as "fortresses," to a wider understanding, where protected areas are seen as interdependent with other landscapes in the matters of biodiversity, ecological integrity, and environmental health.

    look ups if requested.
I also have a copy of "Forest To Field", a history of Rural Municpality of Clanwilliam
and The Village of Erickson. I would also do look ups in this book as well.
You can email your request to Bill Richards . I will do what I can in my spare time.
Anyone with a good idea for this and other associated pages are encouraged to submit
their ideas, also to Bill Richards . Lets make this page the best. I have various records (cemetery , business records and lodges) for McCreary and surrounding townships. http://www.pcmanitoba.com/PClegacy/legacy_history.asp
The Progressive Conservative Party has a long and colourful history in Manitoba. The achievements made by previous leaders and administrations have helped shape Manitoba into what it is today. The Early Years When Manitoba entered Confederation in 1870, political lines were vague and primarily drawn on local issues; the organization of political parties was virtually non-existent. Tension between French and English speaking Manitobans played a large role in the first few years after Confederation. In 1878, John Norquay was elected premier of Manitoba. His government is usually thought of as the first Conservative Government in Manitoba. However, the alliance with the federal Conservative Party was weak. It was not until 1883 that candidates in provincial elections started to use the names of federal political parties. Faced with an upcoming provincial election, the newly-formed Conservative Party of Manitoba drew up its first platform for an election in 1899. Pledging the party to economy and efficiency in government finance, the platform contained some of the most progressive ideas of the day. The establishment of an independent board of education, one free from political partisanship was advocated. Provincially operated and financed agricultural and technical colleges were promised. A Workmen's Compensation Act, the construction of a railway to Hudson Bay, and government ownership of railways, were also included in the party's platform. The Conservative Party, led by Hugh John Macdonald, son of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, was elected to power in 1899, defeating the Liberals who obtained 15 seats. After a short period of office, Macdonald retired from politics and the leadership of the government and party was continued by Rodmond P. Roblin. Under the leadership of Roblin for the next fourteen years, Manitoba entered an era of progress, economic prosperity, and expansion.

    History Unearthed at Manitoba Church
By Kyra Hoggan, March 28, 2003 - Laurel Pottery is the earliest type of pottery found in Manitoba, dating to ca. 2000 years ago. Vessels are conical in shape and have smooth exteriors, with decoration around the neck of the vessel.  Decorations are incised with a finely sharpened object.   Blackduck Pottery is ascribed to the proto-Ojibway nation. The vessel shape is globular. Shoulders are well-defined, while the lip is flared.  Vessel surface is fabric-, or cord-impressed. Cord-wrapped-stick decoration adorns the lip, rim and neck of the vessel and is often very elaborate. Punctates (indentations) or linear stamps are present on some vessels.   Selkirk Pottery is considered to be the manufacture of the proto-Cree nation. Vessels are similar in shape to Blackduck, but most often have thinner walls and are not as elaborately decorated. The lip of the vessel is not as pronounced.    Stone material recovered included Knife River Flint. This stone material is only found in Knife River, North Dakota. The material may have been procured through trade or expeditions to the quarry.   Faunal remains included bison, bear, beaver, pelican and catfish.

    Manitoba
Bordered by Ontario, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, Hudson Bay and the United States, Manitoba is located in the centre of Canada. It is one of the three Prairie provinces and has an area of 647,797 square kilometres. Known as the land of 100,000 lakes, its capital city is Winnipeg. The Assiniboine Indians were the first inhabitants of Manitoba. Europeans reached Manitoba through Hudson Bay in the early seventeenth century during their search for the Northwest Passage to the Orient. While early European interest was centered on the fur trade, by 1812 the first agricultural settlement was established. Manitoba did not become a province of the Dominion of Canada until 1870. Agriculture is the backbone of rural Manitoba and supports thousands of jobs in towns and cities. Wheat is the most important crop, but the province is also the leading Canadian producer of flaxseed, sunflower seeds, buckwheat and field peas. Although originally based on agriculture, Manitoba's economy has become very diversified, with the services sector dominating. The central location of the province makes Manitoba an attractive base for a wide variety of services, notably in transportation and wholesale distribution. Other important industries include manufacturing, mining, textiles as well as printing and publishing.

    The History
    of the
Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame Inc.
The Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame Inc. is an organization established n 1976. It is dedicated to recognizing those individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the betterment of agriculture and rural living in out province. The first steps of forming an Agricultural Hall of Fame were taken in spring of 1974. The Farm Bureau of Manitoba, the Manitoba Farmer's Union, the Agricultural Extension Centre of Brandon, and the Manitoba Agricultural Museum of Austin, were approached to form and proceed with the formation of an agricultural hall of fame. However, no action was taken, and it would be two years before a group of interested agriculturists took it into their own hands to form the Agricultural Hall of Fame. These individuals met with the Directors of the Manitoba Agricultural Museum Inc., in February or March of 1976. It was their proposal to locate at the museum. The outcome of this meeting resulted in the granting of space for the Hall of Fame Gallery in the Heritage Building of the Manitoba Agricultural Museum. In return the Museum was assured of representation on the Provisional Board of Directors of the Hall of Fame. In March, 1976 interested individuals met at the Agricultural Extension Centre in Brandon, and formed a provisional Board, 1976.
