Students lobby to move Assiniboine Community College
Manitoba government claims cost is too high
Students from ACC, Brandon University, and several high schools staged an information picket outside Premier Doer?s State-of-the-Province address in Brandon last month. Craig Ebbers Anthony Leek, Volunteer Staff Last month, a coalition of students from Assiniboine Community College (ACC), Brandon University, and several high schools brought to light the issue of post-secondary education outside of Winnipeg when they staged an information picket at Premier Gary Doer’s State-of-the-Province address in Brandon. The picket was in support of moving the ACC from its current location on Victoria Avenue to Brandon’s north hill on the former site of a mental health centre. David Cannon, the Brandon University Students Union President, has been a firm supporter of the move and hopes to raise support across Manitoba for it. "The ACC is kind of overflowing," Cannon said. "Right now it is barely tenable and as the years go on it is going to get worse and worse. We are seeing an increase of enrolment, and increase in interest of students going to post secondary education." Cannon feels that if the government were to invest in the relocation it would be a great contribution to Brandon and western Manitoba in general.

Apartment Units Being Built Under Canada-Manitoba Affordable Housing Initiative will Benefit Brandon
Brandon - October 17, 2003 - Brandon area residents will soon have access to more safe and affordable housing when 36 units of housing are completed. The projects are made possible with more than $533,000 in funding from the Canada-Manitoba Affordable Housing Initiative. The Honourable Steven Mahoney, Secretary of State responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Drew Caldwell, Minister of Manitoba Family Services and Housing today announced total costs, when combined with contributions from the project owners, of $2.36 million. "This partnership between federal and provincial governments and the private sector demonstrates how we can work together to address the housing needs of Brandon's residents," said Secretary of State Mahoney. "Successes like this are key to developing strong communities, not just here in Manitoba, but across Canada." "This support is a great first step for Brandon, through the Canada-Manitoba Affordable Housing Initiative, that further boosts the revitalization of Brandon's downtown," said Minister Caldwell. "Thanks to additional contributions from project owners, low- and moderate-income families will soon be able to move into this new units of housing that will provide much-needed, reasonably-priced housing."

MANITOBA GOVERNMENT RECEIVES ABORIGINAL JUSTICE REPORT
Province Says Yes To AJIC Recommendations
The Manitoba government has received the first quarterly report of the Aboriginal Justice Implementation Commission (AJIC) and has started acting on its four recommendations, which include renouncing the province's half-interest in minerals on reserves and entering into agreements for child and family services that are developed and operated by Aboriginal communities. The AJIC, led by commissioners Paul Chartrand and Wendy Whitecloud, was established last fall to review the report of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry, identify priority areas for government action, and make practical, cost-effective and attainable recommendations for improving justice programs and services for First Nations and Metis people in Manitoba. "I would like to thank the commissioners, elder advisors and members of the Aboriginal community for their hard work," said Attorney General Gord Mackintosh. "While we cannot erase the frustration and disappointment caused by many years of inaction, we have begun implementing the report's recommendations signal of our commitment to the well-being of Aboriginal Manitobans and their families."

Manitoba Tel hits new high
Market debates move to hold a vote on becoming a trust By DAVE EBNER
00:00 EST Thursday, January 29, 2004
Stock of Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. climbed 4.8 per cent yesterday to a record high close as investors and analysts debated the company's decision to ask shareholders this spring whether it should become an income trust. The debate is a significant one, as a conversion to a trust is not guaranteed, even though a number of analysts say it's quite likely. If Winnipeg-based Manitoba Tel doesn't convert, analysts say, it is worth as low as $36 a share as common stock. If it does become a trust, which offers considerable tax advantages, Manitoba Tel is worth about $65 a unit, some analysts say. Manitoba Tel stock closed at $52.07 on the Toronto Stock Exchange, up $2.37, after rising $4.25 on Tuesday. It reached record intra-day high of $52.44 during the trading session yesterday. Stock of
