Geography
Easternmost of the Prairie Provinces, Manitoba is bounded on the N by Nunavut (with a northeast shoreline on Hudson Bay), on the E by Ontario, on the S by Minnesota and North Dakota, and on the W by Saskatchewan. The south and central part of Manitoba was once covered by Pleistocene Lake Agassiz ; as its waters receded into Hudson Bay, it left behind numerous lakes (the largest being Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Winnipegosis) and rivers (including the Nelson, Churchill, and Hayes) that flow northeast into the bay. In some places underlying rock formations were swept bare; in others they were covered with rich deposits of black loam. An expanse of almost uninhabited tundra surrounds the port of Churchill. Extending south from Churchill and east from Lake Winnipeg, the topography is that of the Canadian Shield ; limited areas have been cleared for general farming and dairying, and mineral and timber resources have been partly developed. Southern Manitoba is dominated by lakes, with Lake Winnipeg paralleled in the west by Winnipegosis and Manitoba. Most of the province's population is concentrated in the river valleys south of these lakes. To the west and north of the Red River valley, the land rises in an escarpment extending into the plateaus of the Pembina, Turtle, Riding, Duck, and Porcupine mountains. Much of this heavily forested area has been set off as reserves, and the Riding Mt. area is a national park. Winnipeg is the capital and the largest city, accounting for over half of the province's population in its metropolitan area. Other important cities are

Manitoba is the easternmost of the three Prairie Provinces. Comparatively level, Manitoba generally ranges from 490-ft./150 m to 980-ft./300 m above sea level. Baldy Mountain is Manitoba's highest point, at 2727 ft./831 m. Agricultural land lies in a triangle, bordering Saskatchewan and the U.S., cutting diagonally across lake Winnipeg. The northern 3/5 of Manitoba is Precambrian Shield. In northernmost Manitoba lies tundra and permafrost (permanently frozen subsoil). All waters in Manitoba flow to Hudson Bay. Before settlement, a large area of southern Manitoba was flood plain or swamp. An extensive system of drainage ditches had to be constructed throughout south central Manitoba to make the region suitable for cultivation.
Area: 250,946 miles / 649,950 km

Manitoba not Really a Prairie Province, new Book Reveals
A definitive new book on the geography of Manitoba edited by BU Professors John Welsted and John Everitt (and former BU prof Christoph Stadel , who now resides in Austria) was released recently. The Geography of Manitoba, its Land and its People is the first comprehensive update of Manitoba Geography in more than 25 years and is current to within 3 months of its release date.
According to Dr. John Welsted (Geography) the book, which took about 6 years to assemble, is aimed at 2nd year university students, or anyone with an interest in geography. "We provide a good level of detail without trying to be too ultra-technical," Welsted said. "You can pick it up at any point and find something interesting. We're hoping it sets the standard for (future) geography texts.
Along with setting standards, the book reveals some interesting facts about the province, like the fact that Manitobans use the term "prairie province" loosely when describing their surroundings. Manitoba is primarily located on the rocky Canadian Shield, and part of it is subarctic tundra; "prairie" areas make up a small portion of the province.
Contributors (47 in total) ranged from experts in botany, history, political science, geology and geography, as well as community planners, a museum curator and church minister. A number of them are BU or Brandon College grads, including

Manitoba Government Confirms Commitment to Social Studies In the Speech From the Throne, on November 13, 2001, the Government confirmed its commitment to the continued support of Social Studies in Manitoba. 'The Government will ensure that social studies programs now being developed for our schools will give a prominent place to Canadian history, geography and citizenship, so that our young people develop a strong sense of their heritage.' In view of the previous Government’s plan to drop history as a required course, this statement is particularly comforting to teachers and curriculum committees. Manitoba geography teachers are also encouraged as they begin work on new curricula for Grades 10 - 12 geography courses. Giving the Future a Past The Manitoba Social Science Teachers Association hosted a national conference on teaching, learning and communicating the history of Canada. 'Giving the Future a Past' was the second national history conference, which was first hosted by McGill University Centre for the Study of Canada in 1999. The conference attracted 700 delegates from across Canada including teachers and historians. Many of the finalists in the Governor General’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History attended the conference as presenters.

Winnipeg is so cold in the winter that there are outside plugs for cars everywhere. In cold places people have block heaters installed under the car's hood. The heater when plugged in via an electrical cord, that hangs out the front of the car, keeps the engine block warm. Most importantly it keeps the car battery warm. Sometimes car batteries go dead in the winter if it is very cold. When this happens the car won't start. The battery can also drain (i.e. run out of energy) if the car lights are left on overnight by mistake. If a car battery is dead then the driver gets a "boost" from another car. Boosting cables are connected between the two car batteries. They are used to restart the car. Once started the driver will keep the car running until the car battery is completely recharged. The use of booster cables can be very dangerous if used incorrectly.
