Manitoba Culture History:
Overview
Notice: The material on these pages is currently being substantially revised and expanding with the support of a grant from the Manitoba Heritage Grant Program. A new version will be in place by January 1998. While history normally draws on written sources, archaeologists have unearthed an articulate unwritten record of Manitoba's past in the form of ancient aboriginal artifacts and settlements. This record reveals a 12,000 year story of human survival and accomplishment in a challenging environment and a long cultural heritage that influences and enriches the lives of present day Manitobans. The major developments of this long time span include:
  • The coming of the first settlers, the Paleoindian big game hunters
  • The establishment of Archaic stone age communities , which developed specialized technologies to maximize their use of local environments,
  • The major accomplishments of the Woodland cultures , which supplemented dependence on buffalo and other wild resources with agriculture and developed long distance trading contacts and complex ceremonial traditions.

Almey, Marcia and Jim Gillespie. "It's not the figures." Canadian Library Journal 41, no. 1 (Feb 84): 9. Asserts that the Statistics Canada library survey (Statscan) provides the most reliable public figures available. Provides a description, outlines the advantages and explains how to use the tables. Discusses circulation by using ratio analysis. Suggests that what ratios show is both revealing and useful, especially at budget or decision-making time. Emphasises that Statscan data are essential for policy considerations and decisions on a provincial or a national level. Anderson, Beryl L. "Canadian libraries and librarianship: where to start looking for the information." Canadian Library Journal 39, no. 4 (Aug 82): 257-263.
