84. History Of Flin Flon, Manitoba Canada
ore body or a worse place to put a city. one of the richest mineral finds in Canadian history, and the construction of the largest copper mine in manitoba.
http://www.flinflon.net/flinflon/history/
by J.D.Arthur and J.D. Munson When Tom Creighton sank his pickax into an outcropping on the shores of Ross Lake in the spring of 1915, the crazy prospector couldn't have been in a better place to find an ore body...or a worse place to put a city.
Creighton's discovery turned out to be one of the richest mineral finds in Canadian history, and it let to the construction of the largest copper mine in Manitoba.
The find also signalled the birth of Flin Flon, a city nestled on the Saskatchewan border about 850 kilometers from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Creighton's great discovery, followed in the late 1920's by the building of a mine and smelter, brought thousands of people North to face the challenge of "mining life".
The most daunting of their tasks - and still a challenge for Flin Flonians today - was building a city on the formidable rocks that were so alluring to the first prospectors.
Because there were few roads and few automobiles in the fledgling mining town, the first settlers squatted with in walking distance of the main mine shaft. Homes and businesses clung side-by-side on the rocks. Since nobody wanted to tunnel and blast through all that rock to put in sewer and water lines, above ground lines were the only logical way to go.
Soon after, long boxes encasing the necessary pipes laced the landscape, connecting each building to the main lines. The boxes were filled with wood shavings for insulation, but that wasn't enough to keep them from freezing by mid-winter in the harsh northern climate. The solution was to pump heated water through them, starting the beginning of December and continuing until April. It was an expensive proposition, but many of the lines still remain, adding to Flin Flon's frontier flavour today.

Manitoba is the eastern prairie province in Canada, bordered by the Hudson Bay, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. Manitoba is known for its wheat-growing, but in recent years manufacturing and service industries have joined to help the economy. Manitoba comes from the Ojibwa word meaning, "Great Spirit." Geographically, Manitoba contains four separate areas: the Hudson Bay Lowland, the Canadian Shield, the Manitoba Lowland, and the Western Upland. The average elevation is 300 meters (984 feet) and the main vegetation is tamarack, pine, and spruce. Rivers are the Nelson River and the Churchill River. 95. Mission Statement - The Fire Fighters Museum - Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
an extensive collection of fire trucks, artifacts, pictures, and information about the history of fire fighting in the city of Winnipeg, manitoba, canada.
http://www.winnipegfiremuseum.ca/mission.htm
The Fire Fighters Historical Society was formed in 1982 by a group of Fire fighters with an interest in collecting and preserving material related to the fire service. Mayor William Norrie and city council , through resolutions authorizing the use of #2 fire Station for Museum purposes. This led to a direction to the Finance Committee to allocate funds to cover utilities, general maintenance and security within the building. From the black humor of a fire fighter rescuing a mannequin at a fire to the tragedy of the loss of a family in the cities core, the stories are endless. How many people know of the wonderful fire department horse that refused to be retired and followed the motorized fire apparatus to fires, pulling his milk wagon along? Has anyone heard of our colorful Chief McRobie, who insisted that his horse accompany him for a beer inside a local saloon after every fire? Some people feel that our Museum has its own “resident ghost” - Peter McRae, a young fire fighter, at 56 Maple, who fell to his death in 1915, as he slid down a pole while responding to a fire! With all these wonderful tales to tell, how can we, as a city, deny the citizens the right to relive these moments in history? This is our cities heritage, the fire department began when Winnipeg was first settled. It was manned by the elite, in a volunteer capacity, that was later passed on to the average citizen. But the elite never failed to attend, they donned their buffalo coats and appeared in groups to observe, thus coining the well known phrase “Fire Buffs”. Today, few fire buffs attend the actual fire, but their numbers across North America and world wide are staggering. Today these “Buffs” appease themselves with museums, web sites, artifacts and books too numerous to give numbers too. Almost every major city in North America has some type of museum dedicated to the fire service, and Winnipeg is fortunate enough have one of the few to be located in a retired fire hall. Just as no one can resist turning their heads to a siren, or gathering where the siren stops, people want to know!
