Introduction
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But there is good news: bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives. More than 2 million American adults

Voices of an Illness is a radio documentary series which has provided millions with an extraordinary window on serious mental illness since the series premiere in 1992. The National Institute of Mental Health hailed the series as having "truly set new standards of creativity and scientific accuracy in broadcast journalism about mental illness." The Voices of an Illness series has been honored with 23 major broadcast journalism and mental health awards, including the George Foster Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting, television and radio’s highest honor. The series also received top honors from the National Institute of Mental Health, the American Psychiatric Association, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, the National Mental Health Association, the National Easter Seal Society and the American Medical Writers Association. This three-part series was created by LCM founder and president Bill Lichtenstein as a way of relating his own experience following his diagnosis with, and recovery from, manic depression.

Manic-Depression: Voices Of An Illness Listen to a selection from the program Narrated by Academy and Emmy Award winner Patty Duke, this is the first major documentary to feature people with manic-depressive illness telling their own stories in their own words. The program features nine people with the mood disorderincluding a Fortune 500 executive, a nurse, a high school teacher, a therapist, and Patty Duke herselfdescribing their efforts to stabilize the disorder's effect on their lives. The documentary examines the difficulties in obtaining a correct diagnosis and treatment, the impact on the family, personal and social stigma, cutting-edge research into new medications and treatments, as well as discussions with patients in various phases of the illness. It provides a message of hope and recovery. National Public Radio stations described "Manic Depression: Voices of An Illness" as "unlike any program of its kind... Brilliant... Extraordinary." The documentary has received an "unprecedented" listener response according to National Public Radio's Audience Services and is the winner of eight major broadcast journalism awards. Biological Theories of Manic-Depression
Melissa A. Bromwell
Much of the existing body of knowledge concerning the causes of manic-depression points to genetics. Many scientists have isolated single genes to which they believe manic-depression can be attributed; however, very few agree on which gene it is. Egeland (1987) announced that she and her colleagues had found a gene that provided a strong diathesis toward manic-depression on chromosome 11. Two different groups of researchers (Detera-Wadleigh et al., 1987 and Hodgkinson et al., 1987) found no connection between the same gene and manic-depression, which led to the theory that more than one gene may be responsible for the disorder. At the same time, Baron et al. (1987) announced they had found a genetic link between manic-depression and a different gene. Both Baron and Egeland later stated that their findings may be inconclusive ( ); this might explain the different manifestations of manic-depression. Recently, Stine reported that there are “three or four locations that look about equally promising for finding manic-depression genes,” one of them chromosome 18. His research also seems to support Gershon’s; Stine believes that a predisposition from chromosome 18 is present only if inherited from the father ( Another common theory of the etiology of manic-depression is neurochemical malfunctions in the brain. If indeed manic-depression has its origins in biology, something yet to be proven, and given the theories that suggest neurotransmitter dysfunctions in depression, perhaps the best solution to finding the cause of manic-depression would be to investigate a chemical basis of the disorder. It seems as if the best areas in which to start would be the same neurotransmitters that have thus far been implicated in depression and the areas affected by medications which alleviate symptoms of manic-depression.

by Robin F. Goodman, Ph.D. and Anita Gurian, Ph.D. Introduction How is it treated? Real Life Stories What are the symptoms? ... Why does it happen? Introduction Bipolar Disorder is characterized by intense, persistent mood swings between the poles of depression and mania. These moods are greatly intensified or clearly different from the youngster's usual personality and are far out of proportion to events in the environment in intensity and/or duration. To meet the criteria for this diagnosis, a person must have experienced the typical signs of depression - helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness - as well as the signs of mania - grandiosity and exuberance. The disorder may be genetic and caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Medication is extremely successful in moderating the symptoms. Back to top.

T his information is not a tool for self-diagnosis or a substitute for medical treatment. You should speak to your physician or make an appointment to be seen if you have questions or concerns about this information or your medical condition. Bipolar Disorder (Manic-Depressive Illness) Wha t is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric illness. Bipolar disorder causes severe changes of mood and behavior. At times you may feel extremely happy or irritable. This is the "high," or manic, phase of the illness. At other times you may feel deeply depressed. An episode of mania or depression usually lasts for months if it is not treated. Some people, however, may have both high and low episodes in a matter of days. People with bipolar disorder typically experience both manic (high) and depressive (low) phases, but some people have only the manic symptoms. Bipolar disorder occurs in about 1.5% of the population. It is equally common in both sexes. If not treated, this illness can affect thinking, judgment, and social behavior in ways that can cause serious problems.
