CHRISTIAN MANIC DEPRESSION AND O.C.D.
a website dedicated to helping Christians deal with
manic depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (O.C.D.)

written and designed by someone who has been there
Hi, my name is Jon and I have been to the extremes of manic depression and O.C.D. I am also a Christian. This website will attempt to answer the following questions:
1. How are depression and spirituality linked? Are they linked? If depression is a spiritual problem then how can man-made medications alleviate it, as they have been proven to do?
2. What happens when you combine obsessive compulsive disorder (the "doubting disease") with Christianity (a religion that requires faith without doubt in order to go to heaven)?
3. Does medication help a Christian with mental illness or actually prevent him from arriving at a spiritual solution to his problems?
On this website you will find the answers to these questions and many others as you follow my journey to the extremes of suicidal depression, the extremes of manic psychosis, and the extremes of doubt and lack of assurance of salvation.
This journey is chronicled in two books I've written based on my own personal experience with mental disorders as a Christian and they are here for you to read for free. Just click on the titles:

Manic Depression and the New Year
by
Dr. Peter Melgaard Thompson
Most scientists studying Bipolar Illness agree that this is genetic illness. That is, it runs in families and is passed on though the genes. It has an incidence of about 1%, or 1 out of 100 people in the general population. In families with this genetic problem the incidence is much higher. In identical twins, if one twin has Bipolar Illness, then there is 70% chance that the other identical twin will also have it. As in Major Depression there are very good treatments, in this case not with antidepressants but with mood stabilizers. The oldest and most studied is lithium. More recently, the anti-seizure medications have been shown to have anti-manic properties. In most cases these medications eliminate manic behavior within two weeks and greatly reduce the possibility of having another mania. Lithium is a salt, and is usually taken 2-3 times a day. It is generally a safe medication with little long-term side effects. On the short-term side there are many side effects. The most life threatening is overdose or dehydration. This is because high blood levels can be toxic to the heart. Patients on lithium should have their blood levels checked weekly to every other week. The most common side effects are nausea, weight gain, acne, and thirst. The other group of medicines that are effective in treating mania are the anti-seizure medications. The best studied of this group are carbamazepine (Tegretol) and valproate acid (Depakene or Depakote). These medications seem to work best in patients that cannot tolerate the side effects of lithium or where lithium is ineffective. This group tends to be a subgroup of bipolar patients - the rapid cyclers and dysphoric manics. A rapid cycler is a bipolar patient who goes through four complete cycles a year (manic, depressed and normal mood). The patient with dysphoric mania is characterized by having symptoms of both mania and depression at the same time. As with lithium, weekly or bimonthly monitoring of blood levels are required. The most common side effects are nausea and weight gain.

BIPOLAR DISORDER Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder involving swings in mood, usually between overly "high" or irritable and extreme sadness and hopeless. There are usually some periods of normal mood in between. It accounts for 20-25% of all the major mood disorders seen in the U.S. population. It occurs about equally between men and women. Approximately half of the cases begin before the age of 25, so it can be important for college students to be aware of it. What are the signs of Bipolar Disorder? There are different types of this disorder. One type (Bipolar I) includes more episodes of extreme upswings in mood (mania), followed by depression or a return to normal mood. Another type (Bipolar II) consists of more episodes of significant depression, with milder upswings (a hypomanic state). There also can be a mixed variety, in which the depressed and manic symptoms occur simultaneously. There are many variations in how quickly people cycle between the differences in moods, as well as the frequency of episodes. Severe stress is often at blame for triggering an episode of mood swings. Below are lists of the most familiar symptoms of Mania and Depression.

Bipolar disorder
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Manic depression As categorized by the DSM-IV bipolar disorder is a form of mood disorder characterised by a variation of mood between a phase of manic or hypomanic elation, hyperactivity and hyper imagination, and a depressive phase of inhibition, slowness to conceive ideas and move, and anxiety or sadness. Together these form what is commonly known as manic depression Manic depression with its two principal sub-types, bipolar disorder and major depression, was first clinically described near the end of the 19th century by psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin , who published his account of the disease in his Textbook of Psychiatry . As described below, there are several forms of bipolar disorder. It should be noted that this disease does not consist of mere "ups and downs". Ups and downs are experienced by virtually everyone and do not constitute a disease. The mood swings of bipolar disorder are far more extreme than those experienced by most people. Note: Bipolar disorder is also commonly called "manic depression" by laymen (and by some psychiatrists in the twentieth century), although this usage is now unpopular with psychiatrists, who have standardised on Kraepelin's usage of the term

    WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
This illness is typified by moods that see-saw between mania (over-excitement, over-activity, and unreasonably good feelings) and depression (extreme sadness). These repeated swings between two emotional poles have earned this illness the name "bipolar disorder."
    Causes
Bipolar disorder is thought to result from chemical changes in the body and brain. It is sometimes triggered by a stressful event. Your odds of developing the problem are higher if:
    • Someone else in your family has had a mood disorder, especially a bipolar disorder. You are in your late teens or early twenties. You are under a lot of stress.
    Signs/Symptoms
Symptoms usually begin suddenly, but occasionally develop gradually. The mood swings may be obvious to other people before you become aware of them. During both the manic and depressive phases, there may be changes in your:
    • Eating or sleeping habits Weight Energy level Feelings about sex Desire to be with other people Feelings about the future
Some people with this disorder develop impulses to hurt themselves or others..

    with Norman Swan Manic Depression
    Monday 6 December 1999
Summary: A recent conference in Sydney celebrated the 50th anniversary of the discovery of lithium's effect in manic depressive illness by the Australian psychiatrist John Cade.
Norman Swan: Welcome to the program.
Today on The Health Report, a special feature on manic depression. Here's one of its most famous sufferers, writer, comedian, and Goon, Spike Milligan, talking about it to psychiatrist Anthony Clare.
Spike Milligan: I was abnormal; I was very strange, I was very strange indeed. I was mentally ill, no two ways about it, I shouldn't have been working, but I had to hang on to this job, which was a very good job. And I went in and out of mental homes about once every six months.
Anthony Clare: But at this time when you say you were ill, you were turning out classic comedy material.
Spike Milligan: It's amazing, yes. It was amazing.
Anthony Clare: Could you have done it if you hadn't been ill?
Spike Milligan: It's a strange thing you should say this Tony. The best scripts I wrote were when I was ill. I've just recalled the ones that I wrote best were when I was ill. It was a mad desire to be better than anybody else at comedy, and if I couldn't do it in the given time of eight hours a day, I used to work 12, 13 or 14. I did, I was determined. There were times when I was positively manic.
Anthony Clare: What about other symptoms?
