Manic Depression
Manic depression is the chronic illness which I have battled for almost twenty years. But every day, I am learning how to better live with it. Sometimes manic depression is referred to as bipolar disorder . Take your pick. It's an emotional disorder which is often overlooked by the sufferer, friends, family and sometimes even by mental health professionals. And perhaps the most frightening fact is that the suicide rate during a manic depressive episode is extremely high.
Hippocrates wrote about moods in the 5th century B.C. as a medical condition. More than 600 years later, Greek physician, Areteus recognized that both mania and depression could cycle within the same patient. But it wasn't until the end of the l9th century when a German psychiatrist, Emil Kraepelin coined the term "manic depression." The statistics are startling - - more than 2 million Americans suffer from the illness and millions of others are undiagnosed.
There is no standard pattern for a manic depressive's behavior. Some go from moderate to severe depression and move on to a full-blown episode of mania and then back to the depression before returning to a "normal state." Needless to say, this "flip flopping" of moods is usually very destructive and patients are frequently hospitalized and unable to work. The families of manic depressives are forced to deal with the consequences of their loved ones. My parents and sister suffered through a federal court conviction, a prison term, house arrest and ultimately electroshock treatment with me. The "more lucky" manic depressives are the ones who suffer with hypomania - - a mild form of mania, an illness with which they pretty much still function at their jobs or in relationships.

Welcome
Welcome to Cambridge Manic Depression Fellowship Self Help Group. We are one of over 100 local groups coming under the umbrella of the national charity, The Manic Depression Fellowship.
Our aim is to support people affected by manic depression (also known as bipolar affective disorder). That includes people with the diagnosis and their family and friends. All are equally welcome to join.
The group is run entirely by people affected in one way or another by manic depression. Our main strength is that only other people with MD really know what it is like to go through. Likewise, only a fellow carer appreciates the issues of looking after someone with this complex condition. You will find a wealth of knowledge and understanding as well as a place you can speak openly about your experiences. Follow the links to find out more about us.

http://www.bucksworld.com/creative1.html
In an earlier installment, What is Manic Depression , I briefly addressed the issue of manic-depression and creativity. Click here to read an extract from that page. I downloaded the following reprint of an article written by Kay Redfield Jamison for the magazine, Scientific American. I was made available by NAMI/NYC (National Alliance for the Mentall Ill, New York City) This is an excellent disourse of this subject. Enjoy... From Scientific American:
Manic-Depressive Illness and Creativity
Does some fine madness plague great artists? Several studies now show that creativity and mood disorders are linked
by Kay Redfield Jamison
"Men have called me mad," wrote Edgar Allan Poe, "but the question is not yet settled, whether madness is or is not the loftiest intelligencewhether much that is gloriouswhether all that is profounddoes not spring from disease of thoughtfrom moods of mind exalted at the expense of the general intellect."
Many people have long shared Poe's suspicion that genius and insanity are entwined. Indeed, history holds countless examples of "that fine madness." Scores of influential 18th- and 19th-century poets, notably William Blake, Lord Byron and Alfred, Lord Tennyson, wrote about the extreme mood swings they endured. Modern American poets John Berryman, Randall Jarrell, Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Theodore Roethke, Delmore Schwartz and Anne Sexton were all hospitalized for either mania or depression during their lives. And many painters and composers, among them Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Mingus and Robert Schumann, have been similarly afflicted.

Another Lesson In Manic Depression May 5, 1998 8:55 am I don't know why everything seems so unreal like I'm in one of those cheap movies where you know noone sincere and the air's to cold. Maybe I've just lost it all. Maybe I could rule the earth. Maybe someday I could feel safe and clean and honest and know that I could be loved too. May 5, 1998 9:15 am I'm still waiting for the sun to come up.You're eyes are watching in slow motion. Colors of green and red. Words that hurt. i'm to tiered. May 6, 1998 9:52 am My head feels like there's a thousand pounds of pressure on one spot. So much higher than last time. So much more forgotten than last time. It's like it's not worth it. May 7, 1998 12:20 pm I have this sick feeling in my stomach that it's just going to get worse and it is. Increasing. Going up and climbing and you wish you had a gun, a razor, anything. Fuck it. May 8, 1998 10:15 am You write what you think because you think because that's all you can see. I mean, how can you not write poetry and beautiful things? Because isn't that what the world is? Do you know how easy it is to fool someone into believing you? To believe that optimisim and honesty is the best thing? I think i'll stop.

Depression and Manic Depression
pdf version
Problems and misfortunes are a part of life. Everyone experiences unhappiness, and many people may become depressed temporarily when things don't go as they would like. Experiences of failure commonly result in temporary feelings of worthlessness and self-blame, while personal losses cause feelings of sadness, disappointment and emptiness. Such feelings are normal, and they usually pass after a short time. This is not the case with depressive illness. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS? Depression becomes an illness, or clinical depression, when the feelings described above are severe, last for several weeks, and begin to interfere with one's work and social life. Depressive illness can change the way a person thinks and behaves, and how his/her body functions. Some of the signs to look for are:
  • feeling worthless, helpless or hopeless
