Welcome to the Princeton University student web project on the relationship between manic depression (also known as bipolar disorder) and creativity. This project was produced for MOL 427/WWS 462 Biotechnology and its Social Impact For centuries, historians have noted the alarming number of artists, poets, and musicians who exhibited periods of immense productivity and creativity coupled with long bouts of torment and depression. However, little has been done scientifically to establish any sort of correlation or causality between mental illness and creativity. The recent groundbreaking work of Kay Jamison and others has sparked intense debate concerning the implications of such a disorder for the individual and society. It has been claimed that 50% of poets, 38% of musician, 20% of painters, and large portions of those in other creative fields have manic depression. On this site you will find:

    Cutting Away the Pain
    **TRIGGERS**
Research suggests an estimated 2 percent of people, or about 3 million nationwide, purposefully hurt themselves. Self-injury, particularly cutting, is a secret plague among young people across the country as a way to cope with inner turmoil. The behavior often starts in the teenage years but may persist much longer. Some burn themselves. Some hit. Most cut. They say it eases their emotional pain, clears their minds or calms them down. Some use cutting as self-punishment. Others do it to assert control when everything seems to be spiraling out of control. Read More

Peer Support is about having relationships with others in new and different ways that promote growth, recovery and wellness. WRAP is about living in new and different ways that promote growth, recovery and wellness. By combining the two, the skills and strategies that we discover in peer support can become part of our WRAP and the skills and strategies we discover as we learn about and use WRAP assist us in peer Support. The combination of WRAP and Peer Support can be very powerful in helping us grow, learn from each other and challenge each other beyond what we thought we were capable of. Using some of the peer support theory, we can begin to use WRAP to help each other discover the context within which we've learned about ourselves, and then help each other develop plans that build a new "story".

    Manic Depression and Creativity
Many recognized geniuses had creative capacities that were driven by bouts of manic intensity followed by the depths of mind-numbing despair. From Plato, who originated the idea of inspired mania, to Beethoven, Dickens, Newton, Van Gogh, and today's popular creative artists and scientists who've battled manic depression, this intriguing work examines creativity and madness in mystery, myth, and history. Demonstrating how manic depression often becomes the essential difference between talent and genius, Hershman and Lieb offer valuable insights into the many obstacles and problems this illness poses for highly creative people. Lieb critiques the wave of new books on depression as well as those on creativity to determine how far we have come in our understanding of this complex illness. The authors also explode the myth that suffering is essential to creativity. Guides for the manic depressive are suggested to reduce emotional pain and personal problems while increasing productivity. Julian Lieb, a psychiatrist in private practice and former director of the Dana Psychiatric Clinic at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and D. Jadlow Hershman authored
