Campaign in Belize against manatee hunts
Swim with the manatees 3.7MB/37 sec./320x240 1.3MB/37 sec./160x120 QuickTime movie January 31, 1998 Web posted at: 11:44 p.m. EDT (2344 GMT) BELIZE CITY, Belize (CNN) Environmentalists who monitor populations of endangered manatees say 1997 was the worst year in two decades for the sea-faring mammals, who populate shallow coastal waters from Florida to South America. Once numbering around 30,000, there are now just a few hundred remaining manatees, relatives of the elephant who feed on coastal grasses. One major threat to their survival comes from boats many manatee carry scars from collisions with propellers. But in Belize and other Latin American countries, the animals are also hunted for their meat and their unproven medicinal value as an aphrodisiac. But now, some Belizean villagers, supported by environmentalists from the United States, are on patrol, trying to stop the hunters. "We can see that attitudes are being changed," says Wil Maheia of the Belize Center for Environmental Studies. "We have people coming into our office telling us they have seen manatees recently or if they have seen some kind of suspicious behavior around the manatees."

June 10, 2004 EDT Ready for the next biome? Check out the Alpine Back to West Indian Manatee The manatee, often called the sea cow, is the only exclusively herbivorous marine mammal. It grazes on all kinds of aquatic plants, especially marine sea grasses, assisted by its large prehensile lips, which are studded with bristles. During the day, it is frequently found close to the surface, sleeping within the top three to ten feet (1 to 3 m). Occasionally it swims down to thirty feet (10 m), propelling itself along with the aid of its large flat tail, which it also uses as a rudder. When feeding, which it usually does at night, it walks along the bottom using its fore limbs. It is restricted to tropical and subtropical waters because it has an unusually low metabolic rate for a large mammal and rapidly loses body heat to the surrounding water. • Related Family: Dugongidae (Arctic Sea Cows - extinct - and Dugongs)
Manatees and dugongs are marine mammals of the order Sirenia. They originated in the middle Eocene period around 45 to 50 million years ago. They are gentle, plant-eating herbivores sometimes nicknamed "sea cows". The name manatee comes from the Haitian word manati . Today, their closest living relatives are elephants [Proboscideans], hyraxes [Hyracoidea] and aardvarks [Tubulidentata]. Manatees are classified as [sub-]ungulates, even though they live in the water. Their thick-skinned, streamlined, almost hairless bodies have forelimbs modified into flippers. The tail is enlarged and horizontally-flattened. Manatees are now quite rare. Perhaps only 2,500 are left in the USA. In ancient times, sailors mistook them for mermaids or sirens on account of their long tails. Today, they often bear scars on account of their collisions with boats, a major hazard. Manatees spend most of their time feeding, resting or travelling. They prefer shallow saltwater bays, slow-moving rivers, canals, estuaries and coastal waters. Manatees are quite agile creatures. A manatee uses its flippers and tail to steer itself. It moves its tail up and down to propel its body forward through the water. Manatees can swim vertically and upside down; they can do rolls and perform aquatic somersaults. Their extra-dense bones enable them to stay suspended at or below the water's surface.

  • The Florida manatee is a subspecies of the West Indian Manatee, one of the largest and most endangered marine mammals in the coastal waters of the United States. (Source: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ) Manatees are large, gray-brown aquatic mammals with a fusiform body that tapers to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. Despite their small eyes and lack of outer ears, manatees are thought to see and hear quite well.
  • The Florida manatee is related to the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, the dugong, and Steller's sea cow, which was hunted to extinction in 1768. They are believed to have evolved from a wading, plant-eating animal. Today, the closest manatee relatives are the elephant and the hyrax (a small, furry animal that resembles a rodent). Fossil evidence indicates that manatees have been around Florida for at least 45 million years. (Source: Save the Manatee Club
  • Manatees can be found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals and coastal areas, rarely venturing into waters below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. (Source:

U.S. Department of Commerce NOAA NMFS AFSC ... /NMML Dugongs and Manatees of the Sirenia Order What do you know about Sirenia? Sirenians are so ugly that they are really cute! Sirenia are mammals which means they are warm blooded, they have hair on their bodies (at some stage in their lives), and they give birth to live offspring. Sirenians spend their whole lives in water. What does the word "Sirenia" mean? The word "Sirenia" came from the word "siren." "Sirens" are legendary Greek sea beauties that lured sailor in to the sea. It is thought that old-time mermaid sightings were actually sirenians rather than mythical half women, half fish. Manatees Manatees (Trichechus manatus) are endangered aquatic mammals found in Florida's waterways. From its blunt whiskered snout a manatee's body broadens to a torpedo-shape and then flattens into a paddle shaped tail. Manatees have two flippers located close to their heads, which aid them with eating and moving through the water. The manatee shares many of its characteristics with the elephant, its closest land relative. Manatee fossils found in Florida date back 45 million years. Recent fossil skeletons found in Jamaica show that manatees evolved from a four-legged, plant-eating land animal. Manatees prefer the shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals, springs and coastal areas of Florida, particularly where seagrass beds and other aquatic plants flourish. As mammals, manatees surface to breathe air, nurse their young and have hair (very sparse) on their bodies. The average manatee is ten feet long and weighs about one thousand pounds. The heaviest manatee that scientists weighed was 3,600 pounds. The manatee is Florida's state marine mammal. Protected by the Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act, manatees are moving slowly on the path to recovery.

West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus)
T he endangered West Indian, Caribbean, or Florida manatee population is estimated at just over 1,200 in the United States. Manatee adults range from 8 to 14 feet long and can weigh over 2,500 pounds. They love to eat aquatic plants such as water hyacinth and hydrilla which clog the waterways, and eat up to 10% of their body weight daily. Feeding and resting manatees can remain just under the water for as long as 12 minutes (average of 4 1/2 ). The plump manatee is an intelligent air-breathing mammal. They will squeak or squeal during play or when alarmed, and they display a shy curiosity.

WEST INDIAN MANATEE
Trichechus manatus DESCRIPTION:
Manatees and their relatives are the only vegetarian marine mammals. They are sometimes known as sea cows, and, like cows that live on land, they eat grass but sea grass. They weigh up to 3,500 pounds (1,600 kg) and reach 13 feet (4 m) in length. They have a mermaid-like tail. In fact, manatees probably inspired the legends about sirens, or mermaids, who beckoned sailors at sea, as their scientific classification suggests: they are in the Order Sirenia. RANGE/HABITAT: BEHAVIOR: Manatees are harmless and are the slowest marine mammal. They have no defense system except for fleeing, and do not fight for food or territory. They have few natural enemies, except man. Manatees eat 100 to 150 pounds (45-68 kg) of plants per day. Their big appetites and grazing helps to keep waterways free and flowing. When they are not eating, they are usually sleeping. However, they are known to body surf. Because of their need for warm water, manatees often congregate in the warm water effluents from power plants. Manatees communicate with squeaks and squeals. They are very tactile, "kiss" each other in greeting, and nuzzle snout to snout. They embrace with their flippers.

http://www.bahamaswildlife.fsnet.co.uk/manatee.htm
Bahamas Wildlife Pages Main Menu I Contact Mermaids and Manatees. The Manatee or Sea Cow is becoming rare. In Florida it is threatened with extinction by a virus and by the damage caused by the propellers of power boats. The folklore of the sea contains many references to the sighting of mermaids. The consensus of modern opinion however is that such sightings were of the manatee, one of four species of sea cow belonging to the order Sirenia. Sailors reporting mermaids must have been away from the pleasures of the port for many months indeed, for the manatee has a grey peeling skin, which is often green with algal filaments and slime, a blunt bristly muzzle, and small round eyes. Manatees have been seen in the canals of Grand Bahama , and it is fair to assume that these plant-eating marine mammals have visited the islands periodically, for they are found to the south in the Guianas and to the north in the Everglades of Florida. In both of these areas, however, they are becoming progressively more rare as a result of hunting, motor boating and destruction of their natural habitats.

West Indian manatees, Trichechus manatus (aka Florida manatees) are large, grayish-brown, aquatic mammals. They range from 10 to 12 feet in length and weigh between 800 and 3,500 pounds. Manatees have two pectoral fins (modified arms) and a flat, rounded tail. Their closest living relative is the elephant. They are one of four remaining species of the order Sirenia, which also includes the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, and the dugong. Manatees produce one offspring every two to five years. After a 14-month gestation period, mothers nurse their young, remaining the dependent calves for up to two years. At birth, manatee calves are three to four feet long and weigh 60 to 70 pounds. Females are not sexually mature until five to nine years. Under favorable conditions, manatees may live more than 60 years. Manatees have no natural enemies except humans. Today the manatee population is thought to number approximately 3,200 individuals. They are listed as "endangered" by the Endangered Species Act.

Introduction
This lesson was developed as part of the San Diego Unified School District's Triton Project , a federally funded Technology Innovation Challenge Grant . Manatees has been written for primary students and will help them to explore the manatee's ecosystem and increase their desire to help save these special creatures from extinction. Manatees are amazing mammals that sailors many years ago believed were mermaids. Students will learn where manatees live, that they are mammals, and gain an awareness of what must be done to save the manatees from extinction. Content Areas and Grades Manatees has been developed primarily for kindergarten and first grade students but can also be used for second grade and ESL students. It is primarily part of a science unit on animals but also will be used to develop a language arts and social studies unit that will help the children to gain knowledge of continents and other map skills. Beginning reading skills will also be developed with the manatee unit.

And, herein lies the problem. The Sirens of Yesterday? There is a mystery associated with manatees. Were these creatures the Sirens of Greek myths? They carry the scientific name Sirenia for this reason. It's hard to believe that a sailor, even after months at sea, could mistake these creatures for the dangerous half-woman, half-bird whose seductive song would lure a sailor to his death. But manatees captured the popular imagination of explorers and sailors of old. Upon first seeing manatees (or possibly sea lions) in the Caribbean, Columbus wrote that these "mermaids were not half as beautiful as they are painted." Jacques Cousteau, the pioneering French underwater explorer, made a television program some years ago about manatees entitled, "Forgotten Mermaids" and only added to the lore. These bewhiskered animals with the gentle temperament and no known defenses, have no enemies except for humans. A cousin, the Stellar sea cow, was hunted to extinction just 27 years after it was discovered in the Bering Sea in 1741. Now manatees and their relatives, the dugongs, are endangered around the world.
