by David Salvesen Manatees, along with their cousin the dugong, are also known as sea cows, and this name is apt. Like cows, manatees spend most of their time eating and resting, inhabiting shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, bays, and canals rather than grassy pastures. For six to eight hours each day, manatees graze on floating vegetation, sea grasses, and freshwater plants. In that time, a manatee consumes an amount of vegetation equivalent to about 11 percent of its body weight. With the usually 10- to 12-foot-long manatees weighing anywhere from 800 to 3,500 pounds, that's between 88 and 385 pounds of greens a day. Agile Underwater Behemoths Manatees can live for 60 to 70 years, but reproduce slowly. Females reach sexual maturity as young as three years of age and thereafter produce a single calf every three to five years, although twins occur occasionally. Gestation lasts 13 months. Calves, which average about 60 pounds at birth, can be born at any time during the year. And because they are born with teeth, young manatees begin eating plants within a few weeks of birth, although they will nurse for two years or so. Manatees' large ear bones are highly developed in calves. Vocalizations, which to the human ear sound like chirps or squeaks, allow mother and calf to communicate and keep track of one another. Adults do not seem to communicate much vocally.

A West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) MANATEES AND HOW THEY LIVE (25 Minutes) "Manatees and How They Live" is an educational film about the life, habits and anatomy of the only Sirenian species found within the United States. Manatees are large solitary marine mammals looking something like a cross between a seal and a whale. They are very gentle, and have no natural enemies, as they eat only aquatic plants. This film introduces the viewer to the manatee with stunning underwater cinematography showing all aspects of their lives, from eating, sleeping and playing, to nursing their young and showing their curiosity towards humans. This natural curiosity causes many manatees to die each year because of laceration by boat propellers. Furthermore, loss of habitat is taking its toll on the manatees at an alarming rate. It is now believed that there are perhaps less than 2500 of these animals remaining in the United States, and that extinction could come as early as the year 2000, unless steps are taken immediately. This film addresses the threats facing the manatees and some of the steps which have been taken to protect them. Filmed almost entirely in the state of Florida, this educational film offers a rare glimpse into the watery world of one of the most endangered marine mammals on Earth. "Manatees and How They Live" is the stirring story of the struggle for survival facing the manatees of Florida and the Caribbean.

Manatees and How They Live In 1493, Columbus entered into his logbook the sighting of a mermaid in the Caribbean. In his log, he mentioned that the mermaid was not as beautiful as sailors had been led to believe. Of course, he had not actually seen a mermaid, but instead, a manatee, and his logbook became the first written historical reference to the now greatly endangered West Indian Manatee. Join us as we explore the underwater world of this fascinating and often misunderstood marine mammal. The manatee is a marine mammal, like a seal or a whale, but is unique in many ways. Like all mammals, manatees have lungs and breathe air. Therefore, they must hold their breath while diving, and need to surface for air periodically. Manatees have a horizontally flattened tail fluke and a pair of front flippers like whales do. But unlike whales, manatees live in both salt water and fresh water, and move between the two at will. Manatees are contained within the order Sirenia. The term Sirenia is a reference to the mythical "siren" of Homer's Odyssey, a beautiful mermaid who lured sailers to treacherous waters and reefs. There are only four living species of manatees in the world, all of which are similar in size and appearance, but with minor differences in anatomy. The West Indian Manatee is the only sirenian species found within the United States. The others are found in West Africa, the Amazon and the South Pacific. Until the mid-seventeen-hundreds there were huge manatees called Stellar's Sea Cows in the Bering Sea.

Trichechus senegalensis Manatees Family Trichechidae genus Trichechus ) are large aquatic mammals sometimes known as sea cows . The Trichechidae differ from the Dugongidae in the shape of the skull and the shape of the tail. Manatees' tails are paddle-shaped, while the Dugong's is forked. It is an herbivore , spending most of its time grazing in shallow waters. Manatees inhabit shallow, marshy coastal areas of North, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean Sea One species ( Trichechus senegalensis ) inhabits the west coast of Africa, another ( T. inunguis ) inhabits the east coast of South America, and a third ( T. manatus ) the West Indies. The Florida Manatee is by some considered a distinct species, but ITIS treats it as a subspecies of T. manatus , and this is now usual. It can reach 4.5 meters (15 feet) or more in length, and lives both in fresh and salt water. It was once hunted for its oil and flesh but is now legally protected. The West Indian Manatee is an endangered species . Although it does not have any natural predators, human expansion has reduced its natural habitat in the coastal marsh areas, and many manatees are injured by the propellers of outboard motor boats. Manatees will often ingest fishing gear(hooks, metal weights, etc.) during feeding. These foreign materials do not seem to harm manatees, except for monofilament line or string. This can get clogged in the animal's digestive system, and slowly kill the animal.

Introduction
The newest residents of our Columbus Zoo are the manatees. The manatee is a docile animal that lives in the waters around Florida and is rapidly becoming extinct. You have been hired to help take care of these wonderful animals and part of your job is to know all about their habitat, feeding habits, and behaviors. You will then be able to conduct information sessions with the public that visits the Zoo.

I
ntroduction Task Resources ... Conclusion
Task
To assume your new job, you will need to: 1. Write a letter to the Zoo accepting the position that you have been offered and thank them for giving you the opportunity to work with the animals. 2. Gather information on the manatees that includes their habitat, eating habits, behaviors and the problems causing them to be on the endangered species list. After your reseach is completed, you will need to write a one page report on the manatees and prepare a presentation for the class. 3. Define the terms extinct and endangered.

SAVE THE ENDANGERED MANATEE compiled by Dee Finney MANATEES AT STARRED LOCATIONS Also known as "the sea cow," the manatee is one of the most endangered marine mammals in coastal waters of the United States today. It is a large marine mammal with dark gray, wrinkled skin, paddle-like forelimbs, no hind limbs, and a large flat tail. This slow-moving mammal lives in both fresh and brackish waters and feeds on floating sea grasses and other sub-aquatic vegetation. The manatee has been listed as endangered since 1967 and continues to face serious threats from boat collisions and destruction or degradation of habitat caused by widespread development throughout the species' range in Florida. It is estimated that there are only about 3,2 00 manatees remaining in Florida's wild waters. In 2001, 81 manatees were killed by collisions with boats. Subj: [earthchanges] Florida DEN Alert: Manatees in Trouble Again Date: 11/14/2003 Dear Florida Activist, I am writing to make you aware that, despite growing threats to the imperilled Florida manatee, on Wednesday, November 19, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) may decide to downlist the manatee from endangered to threatened, and thus reduce necessary protections. The FFWCC is reacting to a petition from the Coastal Conservation Association (speed boat lobbyists). WHAT YOU CAN DO: At the FFWCC meeting on November 19, I am going to speak in favor of strong manatee protection and for a deferral of any downlisting until the listing rule is fixed and full scientific review of the manatee's biological status is complete. Although I can represent Defenders of Wildlife and its thousands of members who care about manatees, the decision makers need to hear many voices. If you've attended a manatee public meeting with me in the past, you know that the special interest groups show up in force. It's critical that Governor Jeb Bush and the FFWCC hear from you too. My voice for Defenders is greatly strengthened when the decision makers see for themselves that you and I are working together for wildlife protection.

Introduction to the Sirenia
Dugongs and Manatees
Sirenians are slow and passive mammals of tropical and sub-tropical waters. Their large thick bodies betray their heritage as relatives of elephants. There are only five living species of sirenians, known collectively as "sea-cows", including the dugong and the manatees. Until about 1770, an additional species known as the Stellar Sea-cow ( Hydrodamalis ) existed along the Eastern Pacific coast, but the last of these were hunted to extinction for their meat and fat in by American explorers. The West Indian Manatees are currently in danger of also becoming extinct. The first Sirenians appeared in the early Eocene in Europe, but by the close of this epoch, they had spread to tropical Asia and North America. Dugongs were the prevalent group in the Caribbean and Mediterranean until the Late Miocene, when all but the Indo-Pacific species went extinct. Subsequently, the manatees of South America entered these areas in the Pliocene. Sea-cows are herbivores that graze on sea-grasses and related plants, though some will eat algae and floating monocots, such as

Manatees are always growing new teeth, which replace old ones that eventually fall out!
The Florida Manatee
With a face only its mother could love, a body able to discourage any predators just because of its large size and the knack for gaining popularity even as its population decreases, the Florida manatee has become an icon of Florida wildlife. In January 2000, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) counted only a little more than 2,200 manatees surviving. In 1999, the all-time high death toll was 268, and within the first three months of this year, 100 had already died. The Florida manatee is on the brink of extinction. Florida has passed many laws to protect manatees - beginning in 1893. Since 1907, a $500 fine has been imposed on anyone who harms or kills a manatee. The manatee itself was listed as an endangered species in 1967, and protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) treaty in 1973. The State of Florida was designated a refuge and sanctuary of manatees by the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act in 1978, yet many years later, the manatee still faces the risk of being wiped off the face of the earth. A good look at the manatee's characteristics, behavior and habitat reveals why.
Non-Aggressive and Slow-Moving Creatures
The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostrus) is a subspecies of the West Indian Manatee - part of the sirenian order of mammals that includes manatees and dugongs around the world. Closely related to the elephant, the manatee is Florida’s state marine mammal. "Gentle giants," as they are called, manatees are herbivorous, feasting daily on vegetation up to as much as 15% of their body weight, which includes very little fat. Averaging 10 feet long and 1,000 lbs., an adult manatee spends 6 to 8 hours eating, and the rest of the day resting or traveling.
