Navy comes to aid of Florida manatees
Acoustic sensors designed to detect underwater land mines are being used to help protect endangered manatees By Environmental News Network staff A defense technology developed by the U.S. Navy to detect underwater land mines is coming to the aid of endangered manatees. About 3,000 manatees remain in the United States. Last year the number of manatee deaths was the second highest in history. While the majority of that mortality comes from disease, pollution and collisions with boats, Florida's underwater canal gates and locks have also been a significant cause of the species decline. Between 1974 and 1999, 145 manatees were crushed to death along their migration routes which cross the canal system. It's similar to getting slammed in an elevator door.

Factoid:
Manatees were once mistaken for mermaids by sailors.
Status: Endangered
Population: The largest population of manatees is found in Florida, where approximately 2,000 individuals now live. Threats: Most manatees have a pattern of scars on their backs or tails from collisions with boats. Scientists use these patterns to identify individuals. But these collisions can be fatal for the manatee. Besides boating accidents, manatees have been found crushed or drowned in flood-control gates and also suffer from pollution and habitat loss.
Survival: Manatees are thought to live 50 to 60 years in the wild. Well known for their gentle, slow-moving nature, manatees have also been known to body surf or barrel roll when playing. They communicate by squealing under water to demonstrate fear, stress or excitement.
Manatees are herbivores and eat marine and freshwater plants.

Welcome to my page! My name is Jenn Dearolf, and I am a new assistant professor in the Biology Department at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. I have a longstanding interest in vertebrate biology, specifically how mammals, both neonates and adults, interact with their environment. One of the main ways that animals engage their surroundings is through movement. Movement, in turn, is accomplished through the interaction of muscles with an animal's skeletal system, and thus, I have chosen to study muscle biology. Primarily, I study the construction of muscles from the gross to the molecular level. I then utilize this information to make hypotheses about the function of these muscles.
My distinctive approach to studying muscle function has been driven by the species that I have chosen to study, marine mammals. These animals are difficult to study with standard physiological methods because of their totally aquatic habitat as well as their protected status. However, to understand how the mammalian body has evolved to engage the marine environment, I have undertaken studies of the morphology of both the locomotor and breathing muscles of bottlenose dolphins. In addition, I have investigated the ventilatory muscles of Florida manatees and their role in buoyancy control.

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/5960/manatee.html
The Manatee
Description: West Indian manatees are large, gray-brown aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat, paddle- shaped tail. They have two flippers with three to four nails on each, and their head and face are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout. The manatee's closest relative is the elephant and hyrax (a small furry animal that resembles a rodent). Manatees are believed to have evolved from a wading, plant-eating animal. The West Indian manatee is related to the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, the dugong, and Steller's sea cow, which was hunted to extinction in 1768. The average adult manatee is about 10 feet long and weighs about 1,000 pounds. Habitat and Range: Manatees can be found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals and coastal areas. Manatees are a migratory species. Within the United States, West Indian manatees are concentrated in Florida in the winter, but can be found in summer months as far west as Alabama and as far north as Virginia and the Carolinas. West Indian manatees can also be found in the coastal and inland waterways of Central America and along the northern coast of South America, although distribution in these areas may be spotty. Behavior: Manatees are gentle and slow-moving. Most of their time is spent eating, resting, and in travel. Manatees are completely herbivorous. They eat aquatic plants and can consume 10-15% of their body weight daily in vegetation. They graze for food along water bottoms and on the surface. They may rest submerged at the bottom or just below the surface, coming up to breathe on the average of every three to five minutes. When manatees are using a great deal of energy, they may surface to breathe as often as every 30 seconds.

http://pelotes.jea.com/Manatee.htm
Florida Manatee ( Trichechus manatus latirostrus Manatees are aquatic mammals. They breathe air; they have hair; they are warm-blooded; they don’t lay eggs; and they give milk to their babies. "Aquatic" (uh-kwa-tick) means that they live in the water. Because they live in the water, they are different from other mammals. Since fur gets heavy and cold when it is wet, manatees don’t need it. Instead, they have whiskers on their skin, and thick layers of fat keep them warm. The milk they give to their babies is very rich with fat, so the baby manatee can grow quickly and stay warm. Manatees usually come to the surface every 3-4 minutes to breathe fresh air. They sleep on the bottom and float up every 20 minutes for a breath. Cool manatees facts: Manatees are herbivores (ur-bi-vorz). This means they only eat plants like manatee grass, turtle grass, hydrilla, water hyacinth, and water lettuce. Sometimes small snails and water animals will be eaten along with the grass accidentally. This gives the manatees extra protein. Since manatees eat over 150 pounds of grass a day, their teeth wear down quickly. Because of this, manatees are always growing in new teeth in the back, so the old ones just fall out the front! Manatees migrate.

Manatees Manatee photos Manatees or sea cows (order Sirenia ) are large aquatic mammals that live in warm coastal waters and, during the winter, inland spring-fed rivers. The forelimbs are flippers; there are no hindlimbs. The tail, used for propulsion, is wide and flat. They are herbivores, eating only vegetation. Only four species exist, one of which lives in Florida. Manatees can remain submerged for up to 15 minutes but usually surface to breathe every 3-5 minutes. Manatees are docile creatures and have no natural predators. Recreational boat propellers account for many manatee injuries and deaths. American Scientist reports on a study, Manatees, Bioacoustics and Boats . that examined the hearing abilities of manatees and underwater acoustics and concludes with suggestions to reduce collisions. PROTECTED
The Florida Manatee Trichechus manatus latirostris , is gray with a broad, square, bristled snout. It reaches a length of 8-14 feet and may weigh 600-2000 pounds (average 10', 1000 pounds). Diet consists of sea- and bank grasses, mangrove, and submerged and floating vegetation.

Use the BACK button of your browser to return. Christopher Columbus was the first European to report seeing a manatee in the New World. To Columbus, and other sailors who had been at sea for a long time, manatees were reminiscent of mermaids the mythical half-fish, half-woman creatures of the ocean. Manatees are not fish, however, but marine mammals. The West Indian or Florida manatee (and sometimes called sea cow) is found primarily along the coast of Florida. Most adult manatees are about 10 feet long and weigh 800 to 1,200 pounds, although some larger than 12 feet and weighing as much as 3,500 pounds have been recorded. These "gentle giants" have a tough, wrinkled brown-to-gray skin that is continuously being sloughed off. Hair is distributed sparsely over the body. With stiff whiskers around its mouth, the manatee's face looks like a walrus without tusks. The manatee maneuvers through the water moving its paddle- like tail up and down and steering with its flippers. It is very agile for such a large animal, sometimes saulting and doing barrel rolls in the water.

Manatee Adoption
Daniel Elementary has adopted a manatee named Dana . She is about nine years old and lives in Florida in the winter and in the Gulf of Mexico in the summer. She had a calf named Dianne who is about four years old and Dana has a one-year-old calf now. We don't know yet if the new baby is a girl or boy. Manatee calves stay with their mothers for about two years. Manatees are endangered animals and their main enemy is motorboats. If you would like to know more about manatees or would like to adopt one, please visit the Save-the-Manatee Club web site. They also have educational information for teachers.
Ms. Peto and the Manatees
Ms. Peto, the a former Daniel tech specialist, got so hooked on manatees that she traveled to Crystal River, Florida in February, 1995 to swim with the manatees. They loved it when she scratched their backs and tummies. It is important to treat manatees with respect and to let them come over to you. You can endanger a manatee if you scare it or feed it.
