The West Indian manatee was discovered in the 1500s by Spanish explorers that hunted them for their meat, hide, and oils. Hunted almost to extinction, Florida banned the hunting of manatees in 1893. The official "season" for Florida Manatee is October 15th to March 31st. But there are Manatee that stay in certain areas all year. In warmer months manatees spend most of their time at sea and out of harm's way, but from October they 15th to March 31st, the colder weather drives them inland to places where can find warm water. Florida's Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge supports the largest concentration. During the summer months the best time to catch them is in the morning when they are frolicking and sunning. They usually stay in one area when they are in the "morning mode" and can be approached quite easily. In the afternoon, when the sun is hot they stay mainly on the bottom or are on the move for food. When the air temperature drops below the water temperature of 72 degrees (72 degrees is the year round temperature for Crystal River) for several days, hundreds upon hundreds of manatee are in river. Best sightings are on the coldest days of the year.of manatees in a natural spring area, all year round.

As mammals, manatees must surface to breathe air. As vegetarians, they spend up to eight hours a day pulling plants toward their mouths with their flippers and flexible lips. A large manatee eats up to 200 pounds (91 kilograms) of sea grass and water hyacinths in a single day.

51. ENDANGERED In The Wild : Oceans
Although their bulbous, whiskery face makes this hard to believe today, manatees are probably the source of legends about mermaids.
http://www.bagheera.com/inthewild/van_anim_manatee.htm
FLORIDA (WEST INDIAN) MANATEE Oceans Unknown Although their bulbous, whiskery face makes this hard to believe today, manatees are probably the source of legends about mermaids. Their humanlike eyes must have captivated the early European sailors who caught fleeting glimpses of them swimming in the warm waters of the West Indies. In the 17th century, mermaids were depicted with their male companions, mermen. Although the legends of these half-fish, half-human creatures have lived on for hundreds of years and are still popular today, it is uncertain whether the manatees that inspired the legends will live on much longer. Only a concerted effort to protect them in their marine habitat will save manatees from extinction.
Range and Status
Manatees inhabit warm waters of the Western Atlantic from Florida to Brazil where they live in coastal waters, freshwater inlets, and river mouths. Warm Florida waters have provided wintering refuges for manatees in natural warm water springs. They also are attracted to the warm water outflow from power plants, where on occasion a manatee has gotten stuck and rescue efforts have made the evening news.

Manatees on the Sarasota Gulf Coast!
What is a Manatee? Manatees are a large, slow-moving marine mammal that inhabit warm tropical and subtropical waters of North and South America and Africa. The world population of manatees is extremely endangered. The last aerial survey of the Florida West Indian Manatees that live in Florida waters was taken in January 2003. The survey showed a population count of 3,113 manatees. Manatee Shape and Size Average adult manatees are about 10 to 14 feet long and weigh between 1,500 to 1,800 pounds, although the largest are over 13 feet and weigh 3,500 pounds. Their torpedo-shaped gray-brown bodies taper into flat, paddle-like tails. They have two flippers and their faces are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout. Nostrils are on the upper surface of the snout which close tightly like valves when submerged. Manatees live to be approximately 60 years old. Manatee Diet Manatees eat by using their divided upper lip, which is very flexible, to grasp and take in sea grass and floating freshwater plants. A manatee’s only teeth are molars, for grinding vegetation. Some research suggests that manatees periodically require fresh water. West Indian manatees have been seen congregating at river mouths and drinking from hoses, culverts, and sewage outfalls. Up to six to eight hours each day is spent in the seagrass beds feeding. Manatees are completely herbivorous and can eat 10-15% of their body weight daily, or 100 to 150 pounds of vegetation for a 1,000-pound manatee. Like other air-breathing marine mammals (dolphins, whales, and seals), manatees must periodically surface for air.

Washington DC 20036 Defenders of Wildlife does not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to others. More than 1,000 Florida manatees have been killed by careless boaters in the past 25 years. Last year alone, 305 manatees were killed in Florida waters 95 of those by collisions with boats, a record high. And the number of manatees either maimed or killed each year by boat propellers continues to grow. This injury comes on top of the relentless loss and degradation of manatee habitat. In 2001, citizens won a court settlement that requires the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to propose new protections for manatees, and to reduce the number of deaths from collisions with boats. New safe havens are supposed to be established for these endangered sea cows. Recent research by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) shows that the manatee's situation is more desperate than the FWS previously acknowledged. The study is being used by the FWS for their Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Marine Mammal Protection Act rulemaking on incidental take. The research concludes that unless major protections are provided to reduce water craft related mortality and injury in the Southwest and Atlantic regions where most manatees are found, the species will not recover within the next 100 years.

Sea Cows
Quiz
Manatees are aquatic mammals that are called sea cows (named this by Georg Wilhelm Steller, because they taste like beef). These plant eaters are slow swimmers; they have two flippers, each of which has three to four nails on the end (there are no external hind limbs). Short whiskers adorn the short, boxy snout. Manatees are closely related to the elephant and the hyrax (a small mammal that looks like a rodent)! Many years ago, there were legends that sailors, seeing manatees from a long distance, thought they were mermaids. SIZE
The average adult manatee grows to be about 10-12 feet (3-3.6 m) long and weighs about 1,000-1,800 pounds (450-800 kg). COLOR
When manatees are new-born, they are gray-black. Their skin quickly lightens to gray as they mature. Adults may also have barnacles and/or algae growing on the skin. BREATHING AND DIVING
Manatees breathe air through nostrils into their two lungs. Although they can stay underwater for up to 20 minutes, they usually surface every 5 minutes. Their nostrils are covered by flaps that close during dives.

Los Manatees are a group of musicians who play a style known as "dreadneck" music. It is a blend of country, blues, rock, and reggae. This genre has also been referred to as: "bottleneck dub". Influences include: Robert Johnson, Robert Zimmerman, Robert Hunter, and Robert Nesta Marley. Yesireebob! Born on Halloween 1985 in the hills of Pennsylvania, Los Manatees have been performing for over sixteen years. For the first few years they were simply an acoustic duo using drum machines, sequencers, and samples. During this period they released two live albums and two live videos. In the early nineties the duo went electric, added a real drummer and bassist, and released their first studio CD, "High Water". Soon after adding a keyboardist and a second drummer/percussionist, the band released their double CD, "Live Medicine".

Manatees, Manatees Everywhere! August 28th to September 9th, 2002, we joined Katie LaCommare and Caryn Self Sullivan in the Drowned Cayes, Belize to help with their research on these gentle, endangered sea mammals. Katie and Caryn are attempting to gather baseline data on manatees in order to help the Belizean government create conservation policies and set aside areas to protect them and their habitats.
Katie and Caryn have returned home but return to Belize each February to continue their studies. While we were there we spent most of our days in a small boat on the water as well as IN the water gathering data. Traveling with us this year was a team of ten dedicated individuals. Be sure to read all about the background information on what researchers already know about manatees, familiarize yourself with the research questions Katie and Caryn are attempting to answer, and take a look at the tools they use to gather and analyze data in their ongoing research. http://www.geocities.com/manateeshockey
Manatees Disband
Wednesday, March 3, 2004 Mark Fischel has related that David Waronker , the Miami Manatees owner, exercised an "out clause" in the team's lease agreement with the Miami Arena, thus effectively ending the team's existence. The clause gave the team the right to terminate the lease after 20 home games if average attendance was below 1,500 at that point. Waronker wanted to relocate the team to Maitland so that the club might finish out the season. The vast majority of players opposed this, however, and refused to make the move; most will try to hook on with other minor league clubs, both within and outside the WHA2. The league, then, will be forced to finish its season with five teams.
Bad Debts
Wednesday, May 19, 2004 David Waronker , the Miami Manatees owner, has yet to refund money to Manatees Season Ticket holders. Eleven home games remained unplayed at the time the Manateees folded. Season Ticket holders were told to request refunds and were promised they would recieve their refund checks "soon". More then two months have passed and refunds remain notably absent from former ticket holders' mailboxes.
