The Photo John Kerry is Not Going to Let You See.
Tim Noah at Slate has the scoop on a photograph of John Kerry daintily throwing his Vietnam medals away at a huge anti-American war protest he organized in 1971. Apparently, an ex-employee and friend of Kerry's displayed the damning photo of the candidate at a trade display for his upcoming photo book, John Kerry: A Portrait Previously, I was only able to find pictures of others throwing away their medals at John Kerry's protest, such as this one:
But it seems as though Kerry actually never did get his hands on all the pictures of him from that day. However, I wouldn't get my hopes up on seeing this picture anytime soon. The photographer was Kerry's press secretary, charged with protecting the man's image, and his book is not intended to provide ammunition to the candidate's detractors. Considering that John Kerry has spent the last twenty years covering up his anti-American past (including trying to buy up all the existing copies of his Vietnam-era screed, The New Soldier ), I am willing to bet that Kerry's good friend will ultimately decide that there just isn't enough room in the photo book for a picture of the candidate trashing everything half the electorate holds dear. The ironic part is that he used Tim Noah, a definitely anti-Kerry columnist, to plug an upcoming book that will ultimately serve as a soft-focus glorification of the candidate.

John Kerry's Vietnam Playbook.
John Kerry is a demagogue of the worst sort. Yesterday, he tried to use the militarily insignificant but oft-reported sporadic terrorist attacks against our soldiers in Iraq for his political gain. At a photo opportunity, he said Update Working link to same piece.] I say to America, we deserve a president who gets it right from the beginning before young men and women are killed...They were wrong. Dead wrong. " Kerry is working from the same political playbook he wrote during his Vietnam Veterans Against the War days. He is beginning his effort to use the blood of servicemen still in the field for his own political advancement by claiming that their blood was shed unnecessarily or in vain. This is astoundingly transparent, and I am surprised his advisors let him take this tack. John Kerry appears to be saying that American soldiers are dying unnecessarily because President Bush should have let the U.N. lead the fight for us, an asinine assertion to say the least. The actual argument, though, is unimportant for his purposes, he merely wants to be on the record blaming President Bush for the deaths of U.S. servicemen, his ugly tactic from the Vietnam War. Update 1/21/04 - In light of the Iowa caucus results, I will be updating my John Kery posts soon. For now, here is a telling excerpt from John Kerry's shameful congressional testimony on

    Understanding Manatees
    Reprinted from The Wild Times Teacher Connection v3n3, Spring 1998. It is difficult to comprehend something as alien as a manatee if one has not experienced them. Especially difficult for children is interpreting the abstractions of the size and weight of such a large animal. The following suggestions are presented as activities in which you and your students may engage to de-mystify these unusual creatures.
    How many children does it take to equal the weight of an average manatee?
    Children may be sensitive about their individual weight, but by submitting their weight on a secret ballot, an average weight for your age group can be computed. We suggest that children be presented with the class sum rather than the individual weights. They can then compute the mean average by dividing that sum by the number of children in the class. Once an average child weight is arrived at, the children can easily use that weight as a divisor in finding the number of children that equal the weight of the average 1200 pound (500 kg) manatee. To make this number more concrete, gather that many children together near a actual size model of a manatee.

    This page is also available in Spanish. What weights over 1000 pounds, looks a bit like a walrus with wrinkled, gray-brown, spongy skin, is sometimes called a "sea cow", is related to an elephant, was mistaken for mermaids, can eat more than 100 pounds of vegetables per day, and travels an average of 3 to 5 miles per hour? Why the manatee, of course! These large animals were once thought to be related to walrus because of the way they look. Today, scientists are able to identify animals using genetics. Now they know that manatees are more closely related to elephants than any other living animal. Scientists believe that manatees evolved from land mammals that returned to an aquatic life. Manatees are large marine mammals weighing up to 2000 pounds and reaching more than 12 feet in length. Like whales, their large bodies can only be supported in their watery environment. On land, their body weight would crush their internal organs. Manatees are the only marine mammals that are herbivores. Just to keep their big bodies warm, they have to eat up to one tenth of their body weight every day. For the typical manatee that means more than 100 pounds of water plants! That's equal to more than 200 heads of lettuce!

    • T. inunguis (Amazonian manatee), throughout the Amazon Basin of northern South America;
    • T. manatus (West Indian manatee), coastal waters and some connecting rivers from Virginia around the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to eastern Brazil, Orinoco Basin, Greater and formerly Lesser Antilles, Bahamas;
    • T. senegalensis (West African manatee), coastal waters and connecting rivers from Senegal to Angola, occurs as far as 2,000 km up the Niger River and in tributaries of Lake Chad.
    The range of T. inunguis sometimes is said to include the Orinoco Basin, but such reports apparently are based on misidentification of T. manatus in the early nineteenth century. It also is unlikely that T. inunguis reaches the waters that connect the Orinoco and Amazon basins. T. inunguis occurs at the mouth of the Amazon on the Atlantic coast, where it may be sympatric with T. manatus
