the order of st. john
The origin of the Order of the Knights of St. John dates back to about 900 years ago in Jerusalem. In those days the trade between Europe and the Middle-East was dominated by Italian merchants. The tradesmen of the Italian town of Amalfi obtained permission to erect a chapel and a hospital in Jerusalem, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and intended for the spiritual and physical needs of merchants and pilgrims. When the Crusades started, the crusaders as well could rely on the Hospitallers of St. John. In exchange the Hospitallers received newly conquered territories, which had to be defended. Thus the military task of the Order of St. John developed. In 1113 the Order was recognized by the Pope and it became an official military monastic order.
The Order of St. John was driven away by the Arabs, and later on by the Turks, and had to retreat in the direction of Europe. In 1187 they settled in Acre, in 1291 they were driven to Cyprus and from there to Rhodes in 1306. Also Rhodes fell into the hands of the Turks in 1522. Eight years later Charles V offered them Malta, Gozo and Tripoli, for the symbolic price of one falcon a year. In the meantime the Order had developed into a noble monastic order, that is why it is often referred to as the Order of the

Being at the heart of the Mediterranean, with its natural harbour and strategic location, has meant that Malta;s history is a reflection of the history of the region, right from the early days of civilization up to the present times. Two important periods of cultural significance in Maltese history are the Neolithic period and the period of the Knights of St. John, who eventually came to be known as the Knights of Malta. , is an even more astonishing relic. The temple must have been literally carved into the rocks over hundreds of years with simple tools made from flint and obsidian. Starting at ground level, the Hypogeum descends several storeys below ground and covers an area of more than 500 sq metres.
In 1530 the Knights of St. John brought about another epoch of great cultural significance to the island. When the Suleiman the Magnificent ousted the Knights from Rhodes in 1522, they moved to Malta to which they were given tenure by Emperor Charles V. But Suleiman wanted to destroy the Order completely and use Malta as a base from which to attack Southern Europe, therefore in 1565 he set out with a strong fleet to drive the Knights out of Malta. The Great Siege of 1565 lasted four months, but the Knights finally won, assisted by the Maltese people and by last minute reinforcements from Sicily. After this victory the Knights could concentrate on the development of Malta and Gozo, which resulted in a golden era of culture, architecture and the arts. A new fortress city was built, and named Valletta in honour of Grandmaster La Valette. On 12

Arrival of the First Jews
The history of the small Jewish Community of Malta goes back to the arrival of the Semitic Phoenician settlers almost three thousand five hundred years ago. It is believed that they were accompanied by Israelite mariners from the seafaring tribes of Zevulon and Asher. At the time in the city of Tyre lived Princess Jezebel, who in 906 BCE
The First Evidence
We have evidence that at the time the Phoenicians were occupying Malta, the first Jews landed on Gozo and there they left behind the first signs of their presence. You can find this near the inner apse of the southern temple of Ggantija in Xaghra, one cannot fail to notice that on the ground under your feet is scratched the first Jewish evidence on Gozo. This Jewish evidence is an inscription in the Phoenician alphabet, discovered and made known in 1912 by Ms N. Erichson and Ms. R. Cleveland. This inscription is in two lines and has ten words: seven in the first line and three in the second. Translated this inscription reads: "To the love of our Father Jahwe."

A brief history of the public transport in Malta In 1920, the B.M.C. (British Motor Company), imported six Daimlers, one ton solid tyre lorries, and were converted into buses. As these were very uncomfortable they were not very popular. In 1921 a Public Transport Co. Was formed. It was called the Cottonera Motor Bus Co. Their president was a certain Mr. William Soles who granted licences to operate from Cottonera to Valletta. Every route had a different colour. They were kept very clean from the outside and even from the inside. During this period the only foreign organisation to run part of the Public Transport in Malta was the B.M.C. During this period a reorganisation of the Public Transport was on the agenda of one of the meetings of the Traffic Control Board. He obtained more licenses which totalled to 110. He imported new Thames chassis and all their bodies were built by a certain bus body builder Mr. Joseph Aquilina of Paola. All these Ford Thames carried 36 passengers. In 1955 he started selling his buses to individuals for the sum of Lm3,500 to Lm4,000 each bus according to the condition of the vehicle.

    Modern History
Phoenician Period (800 - 218 B.C.) The history of Malta has been enriched by the various cultures brought to Malta by its occupiers throughout the centuries. The modern historical period of Malta starts with the Phoenicians. The Phoenicians are thought to have settled in Malta around 800 B.C. The Punic colony lasted until 218 B.C. We will see some of their shaft graves on Day 2. Roman Period (218 B.C. - A.D. 870) During this period, Malta's value as a naval base was established by the Romans. The Romans considered the Maltese as their allies and granted the islands Roman municipality status. The most significant historical event of this period and one that changed the historical course of the islands, is the conversion of the Maltese people to Christianity after St. Paul and St. Luke were shipwrecked in Malta on their way to Rome. On Malta, modern day Mdina is built over the much bigger Roman city. You can visit the catacombs of this city from beneath the cathedral and from outside the city walls. THE KNIGHTS OF MALTA
    Early History
In 1020, merchants from Amalfi and Salerno in Italy, obtained permission from the Caliph of Egypt to build a hospital in Jerusalem. The hospital was built to take care of Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land to visit the birthplace of Christ. The hospice was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Monks attached to the hospice were know as the Freres Hospitaliers de St. Jean de Jerusalem. As time passed on, the monks started providing armed escort to pilgrims through perilous Syrian territory. Following the success the monks had in the First Crusade, the Hospitalers evolved into a Military Order. The rules of the new Order were confirmed by Pope Pascal II in the year 1113. Pope Pascal II acknowledged the Hospitalers as a religious order. As the Islamic movement gained momentum, the Order started retreating from the Holy Land and eventually moved their headquarters to Cyprus. Their stay in Cyprus was not to last. Once again, retreating form the advancing Islamic powers, the Order moved to Rhodes, where they enjoyed territorial sovereignty for the first time. However, once more, the knights were forced to abandon their home. They capitulated to Islamic forces led by Suleiman I of Turkey on Christmas Eve of 1522. Suleiman attacked Rhodes with a fleet of 400 ships and over 200,000 men, a formidable force against the Knight's 7,000 men. The siege lasted six months. The Knights had nowhere to go so they moved with what little they could carry to Civitavecchia in Italy. From there they moved to Viterbo and then to Niece. This period of wondering lasted seven years. In March of 1530, under pressure from Pope Clement VIII, Grand Master Philippe Villiers de l'Isle-Adam accepted the islands of Malta in perpetual fief for the annual rent of a Falcon.

Recent archeological work shows a developed religious center there long before those of Sumer and Egypt. Malta's written history began well before the Christian era. Originally the Phoenicians, and later the Carthaginians, established ports and trading settlements on the island. During the second Punic War (218 B.C.), Malta became part of the Roman Empire. During Roman rule, in A.D. 60, Saint Paul was shipwrecked on Malta at a place now called St. Paul's Bay. In 533 A.D. Malta became part of the Byzantine Empire and in 870 came under Arab control. Arab occupation and rule left a strong imprint on Maltese life, customs, and language. The Arabs were driven out in 1090 by a band of Norman adventurers under Count Roger of Normandy, who had established a kingdom in southern Italy and Sicily. Malta thus became an appendage of Sicily for 440 years.

meli , gen. melitos = honey), now lives mostly on its reputation. Agriculture in Malta has been starved by trade. A peculiarly national industry is the Maltese lace, chiefly made in Gozo. CIVIL HISTORY The principal and almost the only monument of the Arab dominion is said to be the Maltese language, which is Semitic and has much in common with Arabic. The weight of the best authority seems, however, to incline decidedly to the view that the present Maltese language is directly descended from the Phoenician with but little modification by the Arabic. The Arabs, in fact, seem to have left the Maltese very much to themselves and to have interfered with their language as little as they interfered with their religion and their popular customs. The account of the capture of Malta by the Normans, as given by Mataterra, the secretary of Count Roger, does not, certainly, convey the idea that the Saracens were sufficiently numerous to offer any serious resistance to the invaders. If the Arab influence had prevailed so far as to make a complete change in the language of the islanders, this could only have been the sequel to a process of denationalization which had no counterpart in the neighbouring island of Sicily and which would have implied the presence of a strong army of occupation. History and philology alike point to the conclusion that the Maltese, in spite of powerful outside influences, are still substantially, a Phoenician people. Count Roger of Sicily, who landed in Malta in 1090, was welcomed, it seems, not as a deliverer from an oppressive yoke, but because the islanders naturally preferred a

The Maltese Islands have often been referred to as the islands of sunshine and history, and with good reason. With a history boasting 6,000 years of civilisation, every square inch of its land, temples and monuments bear witness to these past civilisations. For those of you with an appetite for culture, Malta and Gozo are strewn with fascinating historical and archaeological sites, some of which date back to earlier than the Pyramids!
History The Maltese archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino, and the population numbers around 370,000. Of these, 28,000 live in Gozo, while Comino is only inhabited by a few farmers. Because of their strategic position, Malta and Gozo have been inhabited for the past 7,000 years. The two islands have a long and varied prehistoric period: Neolithic, Copper and Bronze age civilisations lasted more than 4,000 years; one can still admire vestiges of those remote times in the form of impressive stone temples, a unique hypogeum and remains of skilful handicrafts.
