THE HISTORY OF THE MALTESE NATION AS SEEN THROUGH ITS POSTAGE STAMPS Introduction to Malta
Situated right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, 90 km to the south of Sicily and 290 km to the north of the African mainland, are the Maltese Islands . The archipelago of three main islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino - and some smaller uninhabited ones has a total area of 320 km 2. this is approximately one-seventh the area of the Australian Capital Territory. Indeed, the main island of Malta is 27 kms and 14 kms at its longest and widest points respectively - just enough to cover most of metropolitan Canberra! A small country. But one with a proud and long history which has drawn from and contributed to the development of the culture and civilisation of the region in which it is placed; contributions far in excess to its small size. And not just in its own region. Malta has contributed some of its finest to the development of countries worldwide, including Australia. Some sixty thousand individuals born in Malta have elected to make his continent their home. They and their direct descendants have succeeded in various walks of life in Australia, so that the names of Fenech and Gauci in sports, Camilleri in music and also in the environment movement, Aquilina, Micallef and Zammit in politics, Attard and Schembri in journalism and others - good Maltese names all - are now part of Australia's culture and history. This is the history of the Maltese Islands and their people. A history of a succession of civilisations and cultures, of struggle and war, of achievement in the face of adversity, of continuous improvement to the proud and prosperous nation of today. Once a focus of war ,and now a haven of peace, with an economy based on tourism and industry, Malta looks to its future with an eye on its past.

    Arrival of the first Jews
The history of the small Jewish Community of Malta goes back to the arrival of the Semitic Phoenician settlers almost three thousand five hundred years ago. It is believed that they were accompanied by Israelite mariners from the seafaring tribes of Zevulon and Asher. At the time in the city of Tyre lived Princess Jezebel, who in 906BCE married the Jewish Sultan Omri’s Ohab. After this marriage relations between the Jews and the Phoenicians grew so warm and cordial that they began to sail the seas and occupy various lands together. Some of them stayed in our islands.
    The First Evidence
We have evidence that at the time the Phoenicians were occupying Malta, the first Jews landed on Gozo and there they left behind the first signs of their presence. You can find this near the inner apse of the southern temple of Ggantija in Xaghra, one cannot fail to notice that on the ground under your feet is scratched the first Jewish evidence on Gozo.
This Jewish evidence is an inscription in the Phoenician alphabet, discovered and made known in 1912 by Ms N. Erichson and Ms. R. Cleveland. This inscription is in two lines and has ten words: seven in the first line and three in the second. Translated this inscription reads

Photography National Library of Malta History The idea of a public Library in Malta originated in 1555 with the issue of a decree by Fra' Claude de la Sengle, Grand Master of the Order of St. John, whereby all books in the legacy of deceased knights were to pass to the Common Treasury of the Order. It was not until 1776, however, that the formal foundation of a Bibliotheca Publica Bibliotheca Tanseana in de Tencin's honour. De Tencin is still today considered the founder of the Library. The books accruing to the Library, some very rare or with fine bindings, continued to be kept in cramped quarters in an edifice known as the Forfantone In its capacity as National Library, the mission of the Bibliotheca , as it is more commonly known, is to acquire, catalogue and preserve manuscripts and all printed books, as well as periodicals and journals issued in Malta. Act no. II of 1925 instituting the Legal Deposit imposed on all Maltese authors and editors publishing in Malta or abroad, the obligation to deposit two free copies of each of their publications, one at the National Library of Malta and the other at the Gozo Public Library. For this reason, the National Library has become the main source of Melitensia with the function of placing the written heritage of Malta at the disposal of researchers and general public.

The original projected location was at the Mriehel archway. 3rd March 1932 the first stone of the central block was laid in. Progress in the construction of the hospital was slow. The war between Italy and Abyssinia in 1935 was another factor that reduced the rate of construction. saw the completion of several sections including the roofs in the central block and northwards; quarters for female nurses and nuns; laundry and parts of the Isolation Block .

This scholarly Maltese citizen was imprisoned by the Order during Grand Master La Vallette's rule when a document he had prepared, to be presented to Philip II of Spain (the emperor's son), was intercepted.
This document contained harsh criticism of the Order at a time when the people had had enough of the capricious behaviour of the knights, while the populace faced hard times and the country feared further Ottoman attacks . For this act Dr Matteo Callus was convicted and later hanged!

(as seen by the Obedience of Malta)
During the regency of the 44th Grand Master, H.R.H. Francisco de Paula de Borbón y de la Torre, Duke of Seville and Grandee of Spain, the Order came to be run by the Spanish Marquis of Cardenas de Montehermoso. He, as appointed Grand Referendary until his death in 1965, effectively directed the Order's affairs. The Duke of Seville died on 6 December 1952 and was succeded by his son, H.R.H. Don Francisco Enrique de Borbón y de Borbón, Grandee of Spain, elected 45th Grand Master. Because he was an active military officer in the Spanish army (Colonel) and resided in Spain, he was unable to dedicate himself to the Order as fully as he would have wished, so in 1956 he appointed the late H.E. Duke de Brissac, living in Paris, as Administrator General.
The geographical separation of the administration (Paris) and magisterial (Madrid) seats of the Order became the source of much friction and misunderstanding. This eventually resulted in one faction of the government of the Order withdrawing its support from Don Francisco de Borbón and summoning a "Chapter General" of the Order with the result that on 20 May 1967 H.R.H. Charles Philippe de Bourbon-Orléans, Duke of Alençon, Vendôme and Nemours, great-great-grandson of Louis Philippe, King of the French, was elected 46th Grand Master, and H.R.H. Prince Michel de Bourbon-Orléans, son of H.R.H. Henri Count of Paris, was nominated Coadjutor. Don Francisco Enrique de Borbón y de Borbón, who had strongly contested the Chapter's decision, was named Grand Master emeritus.

History: Malta’s situation in the central Mediterranean has made it an important strategic base since the earliest days of navigation. The first civilisation to leave any significant remains flourished in the third millennium BC, building many megalithic temples. Later the island was occupied by the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and the Romans. Christianity arrived early, in about AD 60, when St Paul was shipwrecked off the coast, and the religion rapidly established itself. On the partition of the Roman Empire, Malta passed under the control of Constantinople. Arab attacks during the eighth and ninth centuries culminated in the surrender of the islands to the governor of Muslim Sicily in 870, but subsequently the Normans reconquered Sicily, and Malta passed back to Christian control in 1090. The Norman rule of the 12th century witnessed a great expansion of trade and a flowering of the arts and sciences, reflecting the splendours of Sicily itself, but the death of the last Hautville king in 1194 ushered in a period of confusion. Prosperity alternated with internal chaos for the rest of the Middle Ages, as the island repeatedly became caught up in the great dynastic struggles of the Mediterranean. The Hohenstaufer (mainly Frederick II), the Angevins, the Aragonnese, the Venetians, the Genoese, the Papacy, the kings of France and the Arabs – all, at various times, attempted to gain control of Malta. Political stability did not return until the 16th century, when Malta, together with Sicily, became part of the vast empire of Charles V, who in 1530, recognised the strategic value of the islands for Christendom, by granting them to the Knights of St John.

The island, anciently called Melita, later belonged successively to the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and Romans. St. Paul was shipwrecked there ( A.D. 60). Arab rule began in A.D. 870; the Normans of Sicily occupied it c.1090. In 1530 the Hapsburg Charles V granted Malta to the Knights Hospitalers . Notwithstanding a determined siege by the Turks in 1565, the knights held it until 1798, when it was surrendered to Napoleon. The British ousted the French in 1800 and made it a crown colony in 1814. For most of the 19th cent., Malta was ruled by a military governor. The opening of the Suez Canal (1869) increased its strategic value, Malta becoming one of the principal coaling stations for steamers bound for India and East Asia. During World War II, Malta was subjected to extremely heavy bombing by Italian and German planes, and in 1942 King George VI awarded its citizens the George Cross for bravery. The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, commonly known as the Order of Malta, traces its origins to Jerusalem where, before the First Crusade (1099), it was founded by its first rector, Blessed Gerard (died 1120) when the Holy City was recovered by the Christians. It is the fourth oldest religious order of Christendom, preceded only by the Basilians, the Augustinians and the Benedictines. Blessed Gerard founded a hospice-infirmary for pilgrims in Jerusalem, and that facility and an adjoining Church were dedicated to St. John the Baptist and ministered by a religious confraternity. By a Bull of 15 February 1113, Pope Paschal II approved the institution of the Hospital and placed it under the protection of the Holy See. By 1126, the Order underwent a transformation that was to mark its identity through succeeding centuries: the need of armed protection for the sick and the pilgrims and later for the defense of the Christian States in the Levant against Muslim attacks, induced the confraternity of the Hospital to assume military-chivalric functions in addition to its religious-hospitaller tasks. The Order constructed great fortresses at vulnerable points in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and launched its own military campaigns in the defense of Christendom. The Order became the first Western standing army and the first organization of chivalry. It expanded its network of hospices for service to and defense of pilgrims along important routes of travel.

Fortunately, the islanders have carefully preserved archaeological remains for the past thousands of years. The earliest archaeological remains on Malta date from about 3800 BC. At one time Malta's megalithic monuments were considered proof of Phoenician settlement, but modern archaeology has established that they were built by prehistoric humans and, indeed, are among the oldest human monuments in the Mediterranean basin. Evidence supports the landing of Carthaginians in the 8th century BC; they apparently ruled harshly and levied high tribute upon the inhabitants. Malta was granted the privileges of a municipium after coming under Roman control in 218 BC. In AD 60, during Roman times the

The Phoenicians colonised the islands around 800 BC and stayed for about 600 years. The Romans took the islands into their empire in 208 BC. St.Paul was shipwrecked on Malta in 60 AD.
Arabs arrived from North Africa in 870 until displaced by the Normans in 1090, and for the next 400 years Malta remained under their control. In 1530 the Emperor of Spain ceded to the Knights of the Order of St John. Malta is perhaps most famous for two great sieges. The first great siege took place in 1565 when 30,000 Turks were kept at bay by 700 knights and 8000 Maltese. For their heroic defence the knights were awarded a new city, Valletta.
In 1798 Napoleon arrived. The British began their long involvement with the islands when they assisted the Maltese to defeat the French, a blockade masterminded by Lord Nelson, and then colonised the islands.
Britain turned Malta into a major naval base, and it is to celebrate this role, the heroic defence and the islands sacrifice in World War II that our project is making its commemoration. After a long blockade and five months of non-stop bombing raids, Malta was devastated.

Whilst the history of the Order has gained the attention of a good number of historians, there has been no real critical appraisal on when and how the eight-pointed Maltese Cross was introduced into the Order of St John of Jerusalem. This is a matter which has escaped the attentions of those otherwise respected as academics, who by failing to investigate this aspect, continue to allow myth to replace historical reality. Defining what we mean by the "Maltese Cross".
    For the purposes of this article, the Maltese Cross is defined as;
"a cross of made from four straight lined pointed arrowheads , meeting at their points, with the ends of the arms consisting of indented 'v's". Given this description, no seal, painting, or drawing which concerns the Order, that is not anachronistic (i.e. produced later, to represent an earlier period), before the mid-late 1500s, portrays the now familiar eight pointed cross.
