Short history of the Tramore Unit The Order Of Malta was first introduced in Tramore in March 1945 when a number of residents were requested by letter to attend a special meeting with a view to forming a unit in Tramore. Twelve of those present signified their intention to attend a series of lectures on first aid and in early June of 1945 all twelve volunteers qualified for first aid certificates and became known as the "Twelve Apostles of Tramore". Captain Michael Godfrey was the Officer in Charge of the unit from 1945 until January 1971 and during those 26 years many changes took place. As this was a new unit coming out of the war years in a era of high unemployment and hard times the financial strain on the unit to purchase its own headquarters along with the financial burden of purchasing equipment was tough but in 1973 we were most generously donated an ideal site on which we built our headquarters in 1973. In April 1952 the ladies auxiliary unit was formed, the Cadet Girls unit was introduced in 1970 and the Cadet Boys unit in 1975. The Cadet unit was to cater for the age group between 13 and 16 years. This page is dedicated to "The twelve apostles of Tramore":

A decade later Malta became a republic. Over the last 15 years, the island has become a major freight transshipment point, financial center, and tourist destination. It is an official candidate for EU membership.

CULTURE AND history of malta. malta's history was, in a sense, predestined for it by its excellent no exaggeration to suggest that malta's history is a good starting point
http://www.focusmm.com/malta/ma_hist1.htm
CULTURE AND HISTORY of MALTA
M alta's history was, in a sense, pre-destined for it by its excellent natural harbor and strategic location. The harbor provided a sheltered base for naval fleets while the island itself, located at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, enabled its colonizing powers to exercise control over shipping in this vast and turbulent sea. Hardly surprising, therefore, that Malta has always exerted an irresistible attraction to the would-be military powers of successive epoches. Control over Malta was a pre-requisite to domination of the Mediterranean. For this reason all the various powers that, at one time or other, held sway over the Mediterranean at that time exercised control over Malta. The list of Malta's colonizers is a long one, including the Phoenicians. Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Castilians, Knights of St. John, the French, and finally, the British. The number of successive colonists is indicative of the important role Malta played in the shaping of European and Mediterranean history. The list of important visitors to the island, from the Apostle Paul to Napoleon, Nelson, Eisenhower, Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt is equally impressive. It is no exaggeration to suggest that Malta's history is a good starting point for a study of the history of the region. I f you want to enjoy Malta, soak up its history. History, in Malta, stares you in the face everywhere you visit on the islands. The good thing is that you will enjoy its captivating intensity.

HISTORY IN BRIEF
DATE EVENT C 5th Millenium to C 3000 BC The first inhabitants of the islands of Malta are believed to have crossed over from Sicily. They brought with them their simple tools, corn seeds and domestic animals. These Neolithic settlers are believed to have traded with the Lipari Islands (North of Sicily), Pantelleria island (to the West of Malta) and Sicily itself for flint, stone and volcanic material that was not naturally available on Malta. C 3000 to C 2000-1800 BC The Ggantija Temples date to 3600-3200 BC and are believed to be the oldest known man-made structure anywhere in the world. C 2000-1800 to C 800 BC In the Bronze age, Malta probably experienced a cultural shift from the development of long established local cultures to what is believed to be the introduction of cultures by separate colonisations of Malta from elsewhere. C 800 BC Arrival of the Phoenicians who established the first Punic colony. C 600 BC Malta is taken over by Carthage. C 257 BC Start of the first Roman attacks on Carthagenian Malta.

Culture In 1530, many hundreds of years after the Neolithic period, the Knights of the order of St. John brought about another epoch of great cultural significance to the island. This is not to say that between the sudden disappearance of the Neolithic culture and the arrival of the Knights nothing happened. Quite the contrary. Many relics and remains bear witness to important historical events in this period. However, no unique or individual culture had originated from the many peoples - the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Castilians - who colonized the island during this prolonged interval.

The Order's original duties were to care for the sick and wounded Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land and to help the poor. But soon after, "infidels" became of equal or even greater importance. The Knights also became "Soldiers of Christ." They acquired and maintained huge estates and castles in the Holy Land and eventually owned a large fleet.

THE HISTORY OF THE MALTESE NATION AS SEEN THROUGH ITS POSTAGE STAMPS Introduction to Malta
Situated right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, 90 km to the south of Sicily and 290 km to the north of the African mainland, are the Maltese Islands . The archipelago of three main islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino - and some smaller uninhabited ones has a total area of 320 km 2. this is approximately one-seventh the area of the Australian Capital Territory. Indeed, the main island of Malta is 27 kms and 14 kms at its longest and widest points respectively - just enough to cover most of metropolitan Canberra! A small country. But one with a proud and long history which has drawn from and contributed to the development of the culture and civilisation of the region in which it is placed; contributions far in excess to its small size. And not just in its own region. Malta has contributed some of its finest to the development of countries worldwide, including Australia. Some sixty thousand individuals born in Malta have elected to make his continent their home. They and their direct descendants have succeeded in various walks of life in Australia, so that the names of Fenech and Gauci in sports, Camilleri in music and also in the environment movement, Aquilina, Micallef and Zammit in politics, Attard and Schembri in journalism and others - good Maltese names all - are now part of Australia's culture and history. This is the history of the Maltese Islands and their people. A history of a succession of civilisations and cultures, of struggle and war, of achievement in the face of adversity, of continuous improvement to the proud and prosperous nation of today. Once a focus of war ,and now a haven of peace, with an economy based on tourism and industry, Malta looks to its future with an eye on its past.

They withdrew to Rhodes and acted as a shield against the Turks for two centuries until 1522 when Suleiman the Magnificent ousted the Knights from Rhodes. They needed a new homeland and, in 1530, moved to Malta to where they were given tenure by Emperor Charles V.
