St Mary's College Visits Malta
Geography undergraduates from St Mary's College have just returned from a highly successful field course in Malta.
The students, some studying for degrees in Geography and others training to be Geography teachers, stayed for seven days in Sliema, a suburb of the Maltese capital Valletta. Activities included visits to ancient temples, research into the ecology and the geology of the Mediterranean island, and a study of local dance culture. They also had the opportunity to examine the opportunities for expanding tourism on the island. The trainee teachers worked with pupils from a school at St Paul's Bay and organised a field visit for the school to the heritage city of Mdina. The course was run in collaboration with the Geography department at Roehampton University of Surrey, and students from the two institutions were able to work together during the course. Leader of the degree programme in Geography at St Mary's, Dr Kevin Cook, explained "This was a very successful field course, exciting and stimulating. For the first time we collaborated with Roehampton geographers and we hope to continue the link in the future. We're certainly looking forward to going back to Malta next year."

John Stainfield This is the area to the north of the Great Fault or Victoria Lines which bisects the island of Malta running from Fomm ir-Rih(404740) on the south west coast to Madliena(525772) on the north east coast. North of the Victoria Lines are to be found a very pronounced ridge and vale topography, where a series of NW-SE faults have cut right across the island leaving a series of high ridges or horsts and lower vales or graben. These ridges and valleys have been tilted to give cliffs on the west and flooded vales on the eastern side forming broad sweeping bays such as those at Mellieha (425815) and St. Paul(455795).

At the southern end of Ghajn Tuffieha (409765) is a tombola feature, Il Karraba (407764) the Upper Coralline cap rock has been breached and the ridge connecting the remnant cap to the land is rapidly being eroded. The clay is deeply gullied and fresh falls are evident after rain showers.
