MAGICAL MALTA THE CROSSROADS Malta stands at the crossroads of Europe and Africa. This has meant waves of attack throughout history, and has resulted in extraordinary diversity.
    June 3 - 10, 2004
Malta, a tiny island with big appeal, lies in the Mediterranean just 60 miles from Sicily. It has a fascinating history, ancient ruins, stunning vistas and friendly English-speaking inhabitants. Our base is the city of Valletta and the five-star Meridien Phoenicia hotel. We visit natural wonders (Blue Grotto), the fascinating "silent city" of Mdina, archaeological sites, a sophisticated city reminiscent of the Riviera and quaint fishing villages. We’ll also overnight on the island of Gozo, where we’ll have a cooking class on Maltese specialties and visit the studio of noted local sculptor, Joe Xuereb. It’s June, which means we can participate in a local "festa." During this month, each town celebrates its own patron saint with an evening of festivities: a colorful procession, delicious street food and fireworks. It’s colorful and a lot of fun. Street in Mdina Prehistoric Temple Cost: $2,850 (USD) includes hotel (single occupancy), two meals a day, all activities. Prices does not include airfare, personal expenses, wine and alcoholic beverages.

THE HISTORY OF THE MALTESE NATION AS SEEN THROUGH ITS POSTAGE STAMPS Introduction to Malta
Situated right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, 90 km to the south of Sicily and 290 km to the north of the African mainland, are the Maltese Islands . The archipelago of three main islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino - and some smaller uninhabited ones has a total area of 320 km 2. this is approximately one-seventh the area of the Australian Capital Territory. Indeed, the main island of Malta is 27 kms and 14 kms at its longest and widest points respectively - just enough to cover most of metropolitan Canberra! A small country. But one with a proud and long history which has drawn from and contributed to the development of the culture and civilisation of the region in which it is placed; contributions far in excess to its small size. And not just in its own region. Malta has contributed some of its finest to the development of countries worldwide, including Australia. Some sixty thousand individuals born in Malta have elected to make his continent their home. They and their direct descendants have succeeded in various walks of life in Australia, so that the names of Fenech and Gauci in sports, Camilleri in music and also in the environment movement, Aquilina, Micallef and Zammit in politics, Attard and Schembri in journalism and others - good Maltese names all - are now part of Australia's culture and history. This is the history of the Maltese Islands and their people. A history of a succession of civilisations and cultures, of struggle and war, of achievement in the face of adversity, of continuous improvement to the proud and prosperous nation of today. Once a focus of war ,and now a haven of peace, with an economy based on tourism and industry, Malta looks to its future with an eye on its past.

    2) SUMMARY
Malta's broadcasting legislation is broadly in line with the audiovisual acquis . It is based essentially on the 1991 Broadcasting Act. Some effort will be needed to eliminate discrepancies which have emerged between national legislation and Community laws since 1997, as a result of amendments to the acquis
The October 1999 Report stated that Malta had made no progress in adapting its legislation to the requirements of the Television Without Frontiers Directive.
The November 2000 Report noted that significant progress had been made since the last report.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... MALTA This Mediterranean archipelago has known many rulers, from Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines to Islamic Saracens and Norman kings of Sicily. Malta came to prominence during the Crusades as Christian troops passed through on their way to the Holy Land. The Ottomans failed to conquer Malta in 1565 but Napoleon succeeded in 1798. By 1800, Malta was under British control with formal annexation following in 1814. During the second World War, German and Italian air raids created great destruction to Malta. A grateful Britain awarded the entire population of Malta the George Cross for bravery after the war. While the constitutions of 1921 and 1939 provided for limited self-rule, it was not until 1964 that Malta gained its independence within the British Commonwealth and with Elizabeth II as its monarch. In 1971, Malta became fully independent, eliminating all ties to the British crown.
