Culture and Leisure
The Linguatime social programme is designed to suit all pockets and to appeal to different age groups and interests. Our cultural excursions will take you back through 5,000 years of history, tracing the steps of the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Normans and the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, to name but a few of the great travellers who have visited our islands. Our temples at Ggantija on Gozo and Hagar Qim and Mnajdra on Malta are the oldest prehistoric temples of this type in the world predating even the pyramids in Egypt. Malta boasts not only a concentration of history but also of sunshine. Thanks to its moderate climate tourists are provided with ample sports and leisure activities throughout the year from sub-aqua diving to golf. Sun worshippers will be thrilled to know that the sun shines for an average of 300 days per year so be it summer or winter you’ll be sure to get a warm glow on your cheeks, if not a full-blown tan. If you’re feeling more adventurous you can always hire a car and explore the Islands yourself. But be warned, driving is on the left and the Maltese are known to drive in the shade! A walk through Valletta, built in honour of Grandmaster La Vallette in the 16th century, will reveal the spirit and grandeur of this fortress city that is today considered a monument in itself. From the bustle of Valletta we will take you to the Silent City of Mdina. This medieval city built on the highest grounds of the Island provides a panoramic view of Malta from its beautiful bastions. The cultural visitor will be further impressed by the number of archaeological and historical sites around the island including museums housing artefacts from the past.

A number of cave drawings and microliths, together with the presence of two taurodonts in a Pleistocene deposit and results from uranium dating are all pointers towards the possibility of Palaeolithic man living in Malta. Uncertainty regarding the interpretation of the evidence provided by the above has however divided Maltese scholars, and to date no definite conclusion has been reached. On a more secure ground, it is thought that man arrived on the islands around the year 5200 BC. The first Neolithic culture shows great affinity to that of Monte Kronio in Sicily and later in at least one location ( i.e. the Mixta Caves in Gozo ) , the local culture appears to have had contacts with the eastern Sicilian cultures of the Middle Neolithic previously grouped under the Stentinello culture. The earliest people on the islands, after an initial period of seasonal utilization of the archipelago's resources, eventually established themselves in cave and open dwellings and developed into the Ghar Dalam culture. They grew barley, wheat and lentil, practised fishing and supplemented their food with hunting. Around seven hundred years later this culture evolved into the Grey Skorba culture. This in itself lasted on the islands for only about a century after which the Maltese were influenced by the Diana culture. Extending into the Italian Peninsula, eastern Sicily and the Aeolian islands the influence of the Diana culture in Malta is felt through the presence of monochrome red pottery and trumpet lugs, which feature in the last Maltese Neolithic culture namely that of Red Skorba.

The Maltese Language is the official language of the country , however one has to mention that one hundred and fifty years of British rule in the Maltese Islands , made the English Language another official language in the Maltese Islands. One also has to appreciate the heritage and history that the Maltese Islands enjoy. The Catholic Church and Catholicism plays a very important role in this country. One also have to mention that in every town or village you will find at least one church belonging to a particular Saint. One also has to mention the fact that the Maltese people spend half of the year celebrating their saints, and especially in the summer periods you will surely find a feast in a town or village in Malta. In these feasts you will see the traditional way that the Maltese people celebrate the anniversary of their patron saints. You will also notice that in every town you will find a

Malta History and Culture
History Malta has a very rich history, going back to pre-historic times. Many unique temples from the pre-historic age can still be found on the islands of Malta and Gozo. Malta became an independent country on September 21, 1964 and is a member of the Commonwealth. On the 13th of December of 1974, by an act of Parliament, Malta was declared a republic. The first president of the republic was appointed in December of 1974.

Malta Day
UK
Since its foundation back in 1998 the Maltese Culture Movement aimed to rekindle here in the UK the traditions and cultures that we were so used to back in our little islands of Malta and Gozo. So we started celebrating our national festivities such as Karnival with the fancy costumes, Easter with the figolli , Imnarja with the fenkata , and so on. The festivities got bigger and better and functions were now being organised regularly and in a more central location. But there was always that something missing, something that needed to crown these activities. It seems like we needed something to be able to show off so to speak, a focal point to give us our identity within the many other communities that exist in this country.
It was not until Dr George Bonello Du Puis was appointed as our present High Commissioner that our cultural needs started to be taken seriously. He attended each and every one of our functions and always applauded the concept of celebrating our heritage.

Once upon a dream
CONCEPT OF GREATER MALTA
(as reported in the Sunday Times) Maltese living in Australia, Canada, the UK, the US and elsewhere were worried for many years. The complex problem was citizenship. This consensus reached in Parliament is wonderful news indeed: unanimous approval for dual nationality to be the rule, not the exception. Maltese communities living abroad requested that persons born of a Maltese mother and foreign father between 1964 and 1989 acquire Maltese citizenship as of right. All Maltese who had lost their Maltese citizenship to acquire that of their domicile abroad will be reinstated in their Maltese citizenship without losing their foreign ones. The full agreement on this issue between Government and Opposition is an achievement of note and worthy of praise. The acceptance of the principle of the sense of belonging to one's country of origin through Maltese citizenship is an innovative concept. That of Greater Malta.

Neolithic Age (5000BC - 4100BC)
During the Neolithic Age it is believed that Malta's first inhabitants must have crossed over from Sicily bringing with them their simple tools, corn seeds and domestic animals. Until this period, temporary crossings were done regularly but were limited to short stays on these islands. These Neolithic settlers are believed to have traded with neighboring islands flint and volcanic material that was not naturally available on Malta. These stone age farmers lived in caves and villages and made simple pottery. (Back to Top) The Temple Period (4100BC - 2500BC) (Back to Top) The Bronze Age (2500BC - 750BC) In the Bronze age, Malta experienced a cultural shift from the development of long established local cultures to what is believed to be the introduction of cultures by separate colonization of Malta from elsewhere. Far more relics have survived from these people who built fortified villages including "Borg in-Nadur" where the defensive wall dating back from 1500BC is still visible.

Malta Where to Stay Star Clippers Cruises Vacation Rentals Guide Cruise Directory Other Mediterranean destinations Malta is one of those marriages of history, culture, and climate found few places beyond the Mediterranean. Sandy beaches, water clear enough to provide some of the best diving in that vast sea, medieval citadels, village festivals dating back centuries, even a Blue Grotto a la Capri…this is an island (along with sister isles Gozo and Comino) that could inspire poetry. In Valleta, Malta’s ancient capital, frescoes in the Grand Masters’ Palace (built in 1574), depict the story of the Knights of Malta, those intrepid crusaders who staved off the invasion of Europe by Turks in the Great Siege of 1565. In the decades that followed, those wealthy knights turned Valletta into an architectural showcase of palaces, gardens, and churches it remains today. But Malta is not all about the past. The nightlife (from casinos to clubs with top European DJs in St. Julian’s, a Valletta suburb) is lively, an international jazz festival tops an impressive cultural calendar, the beaches on the northwest coast (Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuiffieha) are a treat, the diving off Gozo is delightful, and the cliff-lined coast near Zurrieq is pocked with several Blue Grotto-like caves where you can swim in what’s been called "stained-glass" blue water. Poetry, one might say...

"CULTURE" TOURS TO MALTA
A typical Maltese host family sitting down to dinner with their foreign guests. MALTASSIST organizes special 'culture' tours to Malta. These tours are specially designed for schoolchildren aged between 14 and 18. A 'culture' tour normally consists of English lessons in the mornings and visits to places of interest in the afternoons. Participants of a 'culture' tour are accommodated with English speaking host families.
Sporting activities, such as football (soccer), tennis etc. can be organized between the visiting group and Maltese schools. M alta, a small island in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, is renowned for the friendliness of the people. It is, perhaps, one of the safest places in Europe, where children can play on the promenade and the play-grounds.
In addition to the friendliness of the local population (only 370,000) and the warm climate, Malta is also very rich with history and culture. The also very long history goes back some 7,000 years.
The pre-historic temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra and Gganija were built before the Egytpian Pyrmids. Groups visiting Malta on one of our 'culture' tours will be taken to see the most important historic sites, museums and temples.

Bomb culture culprits disappear into thin air The turbulent eighties were terrible in more ways than one no less for the subversive bomb culture that existed, which terrorised both private and public individuals
An investigation carried out by MaltaToday reveals that between 1978 and 1987 142 bombs were planted of which at least a 100 exploded. The culprits of such vile acts were never caught and remain unknown till this very day. A tribute to police and political incompetance in the case of a person arraigned for placing a bomb outside a police station, the court decided that the police had intentionally fabricated the evidence. Not all cases were linked to the tense political situation at the time indeed some were the settling of personal feuds over fields or boundary walls. But there is no denying that the most damaging bombs, both psychologically and physically, were those that targeted government institutions, public officials and political party clubs. There is no hard evidence to suggest that there was a bombing strategy to destabilise the government of the time but the list of targets does point towards that direction.
