Culture
Mediterranean culture is dominant in Malta, but nearly 150 years of British rule have left their mark. English is an official language (along with Maltese), and bangers and mash aren't too hard to find. The Catholic Church is the custodian of national traditions, and its churches are the biggest landmarks in most towns and villages. The Maltese spend half the year celebrating their local patron saints, filling the streets with confetti and destroying their teeth with nougat and candy-floss. Although its influence is waning, Catholicism is a real force in most people's daily lives. Divorce and abortion are illegal, although younger generations have been trying to liberalise laws against these. Many linguists trace the origin of Maltese to the Phoenician occupation of the islands. Maltese, a Semitic language, has survived the influence of Romance languages for hundreds of years, though it bears traces of Sicilian, Italian, Spanish, French and English. Among the country's best-known writers are Francis Ebejer and Joseph Attard. Ironically, Malta is probably best known to the world through a book that isn't about Malta, Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon , the title of which refers to a statuette of mysterious origin.

Country Info Malta Introduction Malta General Data Malta Maps Malta Culture ... Malta Time and Date Malta Culture Back to Top Malta's cultural influences stem largely from its history of foreign domination and the predominance of the Roman Catholic church. Folk traditions have evolved mainly around the festa to celebrate the patron saint of a village, marked by processions and fireworks. Good Friday also is celebrated with colourful processions in several villages. Imnarja, the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, which takes place on June 29, is the principal folk festival; it is highlighted by folksinging (ghana) contests and fried-rabbit picnics at Buskett. The annual Carnival is celebrated at Valletta with vigorous dancing displays that include the Parata, a sword dance commemorating the Maltese victory over the Turks in 1565, and Il-Maltija, the Maltese national dance. Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in Malta, and Ta' Qali National Stadium is the site of important local and international matches. Valletta is the centre of many of Malta's cultural institutions: the National Museum of Archaeology, the National Museum of Fine Arts, the War Museum, the Manoel Theatre (one of Europe's oldest theatres still in operation), and the Foundation for International Studies. The National Library of Malta dates from the late 18th century and houses a large collection as well as the archives of the Knights Hospitalers. The Folk Museum and the Museum of Political History are located at Vittoriosa. Until the early 1990s, Maltese radio and television stations had been operated exclusively by the Malta Broadcasting Authority, but a change in legislation has opened the way for privately operated broadcasting stations. There are two daily newspapers in Maltese and one in English.

Malta Getting Around
Valletta
The streets of Valletta are carefully laid out to channel cool breezes in from the harbour, from the City Gate at the southwest edge you can walk to the centre of town through a series of squares surrounded by palaces and cathedrals. One of the grandest is the Auberge de Castille.
Among Valletta's many fine gardens are the Upper Barrakka Gardens, originally the private gardens of the Italian Knights of St John, where you can get a magnificent view of Grand Harbour and the Cottonera. St John's Co-Cathedral and Museum presents an austere façade. The museum houses a collection of outstanding Flemish tapestries and two paintings by the Italian master Caravaggio. back to top Gozo Gozo has a distinct character all its own, the pace is slower. The island has its share of medieval architecture and prehistoric temples, making it a great place to escape. The centre of the island, Victoria, has a sleepy 17th-century feel. The view from atop the Citadel, or 'Gran Costello', takes in the entire island. The Norman House, on the Citadel's grounds, houses an interesting folk museum. You can retrace the footsteps of Ulysses at Calypso's Cave, in the cliffs overlooking Ramla Bay on the northeastern coast. Other exciting sites include the underground Alabaster Caves in the tiny town of Xaghra, a couple of kilometres southwest of Ramla Bay. The Ggantija temple complex, also near Xaghra, is the most spectacular in Malta.

Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's cave - Malta isn't just old, it's positively mythic. The narrow cobblestone streets of its towns are crowded with Norman cathedrals and baroque palaces. The countryside is littered with the oldest known human structures in the world. Malta is very good at selling its romantic past of Copper Age temple builders and crusading celibate knights, and it has used this image to crank up a formidable tourism industry. Not that the islands are overrun with high-rise resorts - yet. In the face of modernization, the archipelago's staunchly Roman Catholic culture has helped the Maltese maintain a tight-knit community and keep a lid on runaway development.
The upshot of this is that travelers can enjoy a refreshing balance of convenience and unvarnished local charm, and can get comfort for considerably less than at many comparable Mediterranean destinations. Despite their relaxed disposition, the Maltese spend much of the year throwing confetti while carrying statues of their patron saints through the streets and drinking toasts to the Knights of St John. The religious festival season is six months long - ending just in time for the holidays. If you overdose on nougat and wine, you can slip off to the tiny neighboring islands of Gozo or Comino for some serious peace and quiet.

Malta Culture Most people speak Maltese, a West Arabic dialect with some Italian words. English and Maltese are the official languages. Malta has both Maltese and English newspapers. The people of Malta's religion is Catholicism. For Catholics, religious faith means, above all, a wholehearted acceptance of God's revelation, which is the knowledge of himself and his will that God has revealed to humanity through Christ. A Catholic's faith in God is expressed in certain teachings. These teachings, based on the Bible, are found in declarations of church councils and popes and in short statements of faiths called creeds. The oldest and most authoritative of these creeds are the Apostles' creed and the Nicene creed. Catholics recite the Nicene creed at their central act of worship called the Eucharist or Mass. The creeds summarize Catholic beliefs concerning the trinity and creation ; sin, the incarnation, and salvation ; the nature of the church and life after death. These core doctrines, in turn, form the basic guidelines for how Catholics should live their life. Home Government Land People ... Other links

    Culture of Malta
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The culture of Malta reflects the various influences of different countries, namely Italy and the United Kingdom , which ruled Malta until . The Maltese are overwhelmingly Roman Catholic and the influence of the Church is strong, with divorce and abortion still being banned by law. The use of Italian has declined as a result of British influence and official policy, with English becoming the language of education, along with Maltese . However, television from Italy is widely watched in Malta, having been available before the country introduced its own service in the early 1960s. Since independence, closer links with the Italians (known in Maltese as taljani ) have developed. Local festivals, similar to those in Italy, are commonplace, celebrating weddings, christenings and saints' days. British influences remain strong. Many Maltese avidly follow English football matches. Traffic still drives on the left , as in the UK, and many visitors from the UK are surprised to see British cars from the 1960s and 1970s still on the road. Sarasota, FL 34276 Summing Up, and the Way Forward. Dr. David Trump
In the opening session, a number of distinguished speakers, fro m President de Marco down, spoke on the Maltese prehistoric heritage and the problems of its conservation. Then at the end, two specific examples of the threats, the proposed rubbish dump in a quarry close to Mnajdra and the continuing hostility of the hunting lobby in the islands, were vigorously debated. Between these, and more particularly relevant to the subject of the Conference, a stimulating and wide range of papers were presented. Some were illustrated by a traditional set of slides, run through a rather temperamental projector, others by several versions of state-of-the-art video equipment, though some of these were not without their glitches too. Though well behind the times on this one, I personally felt that some of these latter were leaving the archaeological content subservient to exploring the potential of the new techniques. While naturally concentrating on Malta, papers included to advantage comparative material from as far afield as the Aran Islands and Crete, Hadrian’s Wall and central Mexico. An equally wide range of topics and general themes was discussed, some old, some new. There is insufficient space here to comment on all of them, so the brief personal selection in no way reflects on those omitted.
