The lectures covered periods from prehistoric to Byzantine. Most of the lectures were held at the archaeology centre on the university campus, but some were held during conducted visits to the island's many ancient sites. The excavation site, Tas-Silg, is a multi-period site, ranging from structures from the prehistoric Maltese Temple Period through a Punic sanctuary and up to a Byzantine church, although the vast majority of finds were Punic. The summer school excavated three pits, extending and deepening areas worked on the previous year.

About the Department
Welcome to the Department of Classics and Archaeology
The Department offers B.A. and B.A.(Hons.) M.A. and Ph.D. degrees both in Archaeology and in Classics. Archaeology can be taken as a main area of study. The Programme is intended to provide students with as broad a base for this discipline as possible. The programme consists of a number of compulsory study units, including an introductory unit and a series of other study units covering as much as possible of the chronological divisions of central and eastern Mediterranean archaeology. These are followed by other study units focussing on Maltese archaeology in the same periods. Other units are concerned with aspects closely related to Archaeology, such as principles of Conservation and Scientific contributions to the discipline. Students are also recommended to take part in the Department's excavations. Classics may be taken either as a main or as a secondary area of study. The Latin and Greek languages and literature are studied. The programme is divided into two streams of courses intended to cater for students who join the Programme with an "A" or "O" level in Latin and Greek (Stream A), and others with no specific qualification at all (Stream B). Courses on various aspects of the Classical world are also offered.

Your browser does not support javascript Celebrating an Island Heritage Volume 50 Number 4, July/August 1997 by Mark Rose The Neolithic temple of Hagar Qim, Malta (Mark Rose) [LARGER IMAGE] The seventeenth-century antiquarian Gian Francesco Abela, vice-chancellor of the Knights of St. John, has been called the Father of Maltese Historiography for his Descrittione di Malta (1647), and the Founder of the Malta Museum for his antiquities collection, which he willed to the College of Jesuit Fathers in Valletta, stipulating that the objects be kept "in perpetuo...a benefitio de curiosi antiquarii." In 1902 construction workers discovered an underground burial complex, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, and emptied most of its 32 chambers of bones, dumping them in nearby fields. The Maltese archaeologist Themistocles Zammitt conducted a clean-up excavation at the Hypogeum a few years later, recovering pottery, stone tools, beads and pendants, and figurines of people and animals. Because of these efforts and his excavations at the Tarxien temples from 1915 to 1919, Zammitt earned the epithet Father of Maltese prehistory. After Zammitt, however, Maltese archaeology faltered and work on the islands was dominated by British and Italian scholars. Today, Maltese archaeology is experiencing a rebirth.

UNESCO has designated the main Megalithic Temples of Malta and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum as WORLD HERITAGE SITES. The following is an extract from the Reports of the 4th (1980) and the 16th (1992) Sessions of the Committee: Seven megalithic temples are to be found on the islands of Malta and Gozo, each a result of an individual development. The Ggantija complex on the island of Gozo is remarkable for its superhuman achievements dating from [the Bronze Age] 3,600 BCE On the island of Malta, the temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra and Tarxien are unique architectural masterpieces, given the very limited resources of their builders. The Ta' Hagrat and Skorba complexes bear witness to the development of the temple tradition in Malta. The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is an enormous subterranean structure excavated with cyclopean rigging to lift huge blocks of coralline limestone around the year 2500 bc (3,000 BCE). The Hypogeum, possibly conceived as a sanctuary, has been a necropolis since prehistoric times. The Megalithic Temples of the Maltese islands are on the prestigious World Heritage Sites list, but a few people know about these prehistoric free-standing stone structures in the world which are much older than the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. This Web site is being constructed to give information about these sites and the other temple sites in Malta that are not on the UNESCO list.

Neolithic temple of Hagar Qim, Island of Malta
The Mediterranean island of Malta figures in the historical record of Europe due to its association with the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, who fled to Malta from the island of Rhodes in 1530. Yet this small island of 243 square kilometers has a far greater importance in European prehistory due to its extraordinary collection of megalithic temples. Situated 80 kilometers south of Sicily and 370 kilometers east of the Tunisian coast, the island of Malta appears to have been first settled during the early Neolithic period by a wave of immigrants from the island of Sicily. This appearance of Neolithic settlement is however strongly challenged by new research concerning a probable Paleolithic influence, details of which are presented throughout this essay. Before examining this new research, let us take a brief look at the orthodox, or conventional, theories regarding the origin and nature of human settlements on the island of Malta. On the islands of Malta and nearby Gozo, the remains of 50 temples have been found, with 23 in various states of preservation. No particular pattern emerges from the distribution of these temples and this may be explained by the probability that numerous temples were destroyed in antiquity and that others remain to be discovered. There are also numerous menhirs and dolmens scattered across the two islands, but their spatial relationship to the larger temple complexes has not been studied in any detail.

    Malta
Malta is located in the Mediterranean Sea and is unparalleled in its archeological findings. This island is between southern Italy and Northern Africa. Directly before the discovery of all archeological artifacts, the British used this island as a naval base because the island was the perfect staging point for trade, war, and all sea travels. British use of the island led to the archaeological interest in the island. Arthur Issel, an English scientist came to Malta looking for fossils. He found artifacts throughout the fields of Malta. Another important discovery was the Hypogeum. This was an ancient temple, or burial chamber. The British found this building in about 1899 during construction projects, but they did not reveal its existence until 1902 when construction of the houses around it was finished. The temple was officially discovered and excavated by Sir Temi Zammi. The temple was opened in 1913 to the public. In 1992 the temple was closed to public viewing for restoration which was necessary as tourism had caused much damage to it. The Hypogeum, along with other megalithic structures found throughout Malta are evidence of a complex culture and set of beliefs. References: GHAR DALAM: by Bernard Nantet.

    first settlers
Malta has been inhabited since about 5200 BC.
Archaeologists have been able to determine the origin of the first inhabitants of the island with the help of pot sherds, found in the cave of Ghar Dalam in Birzebbuga. The pottery used by these people shows a close resemblance to that of the Stentinello culture of Sicily from about the same time. Hence we may assume that the first inhabitants of Malta originated from there. Sicily is about 60 miles north of Malta - a distance that could be crossed even in prehistoric times.
    temple period
After some new immigrants arrived in Malta, the so called Temple Culture developed around 4000 BC. The first temples were constructed about 3600 BC. Ggantija in Xaghra (Gozo) is one of them. The temples were built with huge stone blocks and almost always consist of a number of trefoil shaped rooms, interconnected by a corridor. The temples were used for the veneration of the goddess of fertility, of which several statuettes were found. She is depicted as an obese woman; archaeologists call these images 'fat lady' statues. In many cultures obesity is a symbol of abundance and fertility.
