Credits As one of the earliest of the medieval Sudanic empires, Mali has captured the attention of historians from the Middle Ages to the present day. North African and Arabian travellers to Mali wrote down several valuable descriptions of this kingdom on the Niger, and even medieval Europeans were distantly aware of a fabled land of kings and gold, resplendent in wealth and power beyond the boundaries of the known world. And little though the medieval and early modern inhabitants of Europe might have been aware of it, this very gold was fast becoming the foundation of their own economy. For the history of Africa, an understanding of medieval Mali is essential. Though the topic of "state formation" has been the subject of some controversy in African studies, it is undeniable that Mali became one of the huge states of pre-modern Africa, with a complex governmental structure headed by the king and managed by officials, sub-kings, and bureaucrats. Moreover, Mali was one of the first states south of the Sahara to see the new religion of Islam firmly take hold. The message of the Prophet was soon allied to the interest of the rulers of Mali, and a strong relationship between religion and the state quickly developed. These and other themes are considered for the four periods of Malian history listed below.

The West African regions of Senegambia (Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau) and the Western Sudan (Mali, eastern Guinea, etc.) feature a wide variety of 'traditional' social systems and cultures. We find various systems of kinship (patrilineal, matrilineal and mixed forms), of political centralisation (from 'acephalous' to 'state'), different artistic expressions, ecological habitats, agricultural and economic specialisation, etc. Both regions are also endowed with comparatively abundant historical sources (medieval Arab geographers, Portuguese navigators of the fifteenth century, European and Cape-Verdian traders, etc.). These afford us with a considerable time-depth of textual documentation.
All of these features render the region an ideal location for social/cultural-anthropological studies, both synchronic and diachronic, as well as for historical studies. An even greater time-depth is attained by archaeology, for which the region also offers great prospects. Quite some research has already been carried out in and near the flood plains of the rivers

Modern Mali

Since independence from France in 1960, Mali has struggled against both natural and human problems. Natural disasters include severe periodic droughts and years of uneven rainfall. Human problems center on unsatisfactory government policies, ethnic and social unrest, and economic downturns. First, Mali followed Marxist policies, under President Modibo Keita, until he was overthrown in a coup d'état in 1968. Government control of the economy provided few incentives for development. In addition, oppressive military governments, attempted coups and corruption dominated the country until 1992, when a democratically elected government came to power. However, political, ethnic and social tensions remain. Tensions, exacerbated in January 1994 by the 50 percent devaluation of the currency (the CFA franc), erupted into rioting in parts of the country.
Ethnic tensions between the Tuaregs and the government turned to violence in 1990 as the government imposed a state of emergency and repressive measures in the Gao and Timbuktu regions in response to its claim that the Tuareg rebels were attempting to establish a secessionist state. Unrest continued until 1995, after which significant numbers of refugees began returning to the country. However, clashes have continued in the northern part of the country and have also broken out in the Kayes region in the west between Soninke farmers and Fulani herders over access to water and pasture.

    Issues in African History
Professor James Giblin, Department of History, The University of Iowa Like the art of all peoples, the art of Africans expresses values, attitudes, and thought which are the products of their past experience. For that reason, the study of their art provides a way of learning about their history. Through the study of African art we can study the questions which have long preoccupied historians of Africa. This essay written by a historian who studies the African past presents an introduction to these questions. Its purpose is to encourage students to use their knowledge of African art to think about issues in African history. As students of African art begin to consider the African past, they must also consider how Western conceptions of "race" and "racial" difference have influenced our notions of the African past. These ideas, which have usually contrasted the presumed inferiority of black peoples with the superiority of whites, arose in Western societies as Europeans sought to justify their enslavement of Africans and the subsequent colonization of Africa. Historians now recognize that ideas of racial inferiority have inspired the belief that in the past African peoples lived in a state of primitive barbarism. At the same time, they have realized that many of the European writings which they use to reconstruct the African past such as accounts by nineteenth-century missionaries and travelers, for example are themselves tainted by these same notions of African inferiority.
