The northern half of Mali is nearly all Saharan desert. By contrast, in the south there is usually enough rainfall to grow crops without irrigation. In between these two areas is a wide belt of semi-desert, called the Sahel, and growing food there depends on the flooding of the Niger River. The Niger River Printable version sv=13;

"The river is very, very important in the life of the [capital] city. It gives us fish to eat and sell, water to drink, a place to wash and do laundry, and a means of transport. We could not live without the river."
Fish trader, Bamako The Niger is one of the great rivers of Africa. It stretches over 2,500 miles in a long arc running from Guinea to Mali, right up to the edge of the Sahara, before turning south to the sea. Mali sits at the top of this arc, where the river opens into a massive, fertile, inland delta, where the water spreads out. The enormous length of the Niger means that journeys over land in Mali often involve a river crossing. In some areas, this event has become a part of tradition. For example, when their animals are brought back across the Niger from distant grazing lands, the Fulani people in Diafarabé celebrate with a

    Geography of Ancient Mali Location: Western Africa Continent: Africa Rivers: The Niger River is the largest river. In the south, this river provided water for farming, laundering and bathing. Terrain: The northwestern region of the empire extends into the Sahara desert. It is almost entirely arid, without water. In the central and southern areas, the Niger River has an annual flood cycle with high water between August and November. A savannah or grassland stretches across the southern region. Sahara Desert: This desert, known as the "Sea of Sand," is the largest desert in the world. Sahara means "desert" in Arabic. Sahel means "shore." It is not really a shoreline but a place where short grasses and shrubby bushes grow at the edge of the desert. This sahel is in between the desert and the savannah. Camels are called the "ships of the desert." Important Cities: Both of these cities were important because they lay along the trans-Saharan trade routes where gold was traded for salt. Wealthy merchants lived in these cities. Once the Portuguese explorers started sailing the seas to trade, however, these landlocked cities fell into ruins. Timbuktu: a great trading center and home of an ancient university and library which contained Greek and Roman books.

    Mali Tours Overview
    Arriving in Mali can be quite a shock. As you step out of the air-conditioned cocoon of a modern jet at Bamako's dusty, decaying airport, you may feel as though you've left civilization behind. But first glances can be deceiving. If you look beyond the rusting terminal, you'll see the real Mali: distinctive mud dwellings inhabited by flamboyantly dressed Malians going about their business. In many ways, little has changed since Mali's days as the site of great empires. Travelers willing to brave the heat and dust will find that they have entered an impressive civilization, where life today is much as it always has been. Mali has more archaeological sites than any other African country except Egypt - it is a poor country with an extremely rich heritage. Mali, however, is more than ancient artifacts. It contains within its borders the transition between the tropics of West Africa and the arid northern region. The culture mix makes for a colorful population, while the geographical variety accounts for the country's beauty. Given the diversity, Mali would be the destination we'd choose if we could make only one stop in West Africa.
