Malians are friendly, easygoing people whose eagerness to share their rich and varied culture and traditions embraces students from the moment they arrive. Although the country is poor, the openness and generosity of its people are overwhelming. Mali's history is alive in places like Timbuktu, Djenne, and Kangaba. Many students are surprised and intrigued to learn that Mali's adventurous past dates to Abu Bakari II's 1311 expedition to the New World. Visiting the striking landscape and experiencing the culture of the cliff-dwelling Dogon people leaves students with indelible memories. A semester in Mali is an unforgettable experience.

Five years in the making, Banning Eyre's In Griot Time (Temple) provides a vivid, behind-the-scenes look at the music scene in Bamako, Mali. Eyre spent seven months as an apprentice to guitarist Djelimady Tounkara of the Super Rail Band. His account goes beyond musicology and social history to reveal the personalities and the inner workings of one of the world's most fascinating music cultures. Are the griots guardians of Mali's cultural heritage? Or are they exploiters who keep society trapped in the past? Do American blues and string music really have roots in West Africa? Can an African nation embrace modernity without losing its ancient soul? These are the questions that unify the stories in this remarkable book. Mali's top musicians are here: Salif Keita, Oumou Sangar, Ali Farka Tour, Habib Koite, Sali Sidib, and others. But equally interesting are less famous incidental characters. Anyone who has ever been touched by African music, or dreamed of travel, will want to read In Griot Time Djelimady Tounkara steps out for a solo.

A Commentary: African Cultural Retentions in Louisiana
Charles E. Siler
The thread which binds the quilt of Louisiana culture is African.
Food, folkways, music, dance, religion, ritual, language and style of
creativity are among the many areas where this influence is evident.
In 1719, two hundred Africans were brought to New Orleans one year after its
so-called founding. Why? According to Dr. Gwendolyn Midlo Hall, African
people had the skills and knowledge to make the newest French colony viable.
According to Dr. Hall, the French deliberately brought people from the
Senegambian region to their new colony because the Senegal valley was similar
to the Mississippi valley, they specifically instructed the captains of the ships bringing the enslaved to "produce several blacks who knew how to cultivate rice" and also bring "three or four barrels of rice for seeding which they were to give to the Company (i.e., the Company of the Indies) upon arrival in Louisiana." Rice became the most successful food crop to be cultivated in the new French colony.

  • The participants announce the launching by museums of awareness and training activities for police and customs officers in order to allow them to better identify protected cultural objects, and with a view to the creation of specialized customs and police services. They request ICOM and UNESCO to prepare a handbook and teaching materials to this effect.
  • They propose the creation in each country of a flexible structure associating museums, police and customs in order to facilitate the urgent transmission of information on stolen cultural objects to INTERPOL and the regional liaison office of the Customs Cooperation Council.

With literally several thousand cultures under its control, Songhay was the largest empire in African history.

Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors. A strategic desert crossroads linking the Arab world and sub-Saharan Africa, Mali enjoys a complex and diverse heritage. Its distinctive ethnic groups — including the nomadic Tuaregs, the Dogon cliff dwellers, and the many farming societies settled along the Niger delta — continue to practice their traditional ways of life, rich in indigenous arts, religious expression, and strong community allegiances. Yet, at the same time, modern, democratic Mali is at the forefront of African nations striving to address essential development issues and, with support from the highest level of government, focus on issues relating to gender and family. With its blend of tribal heritage and Islamic influence, lively cities and mud-walled mosques, Mali provides a fascinating opportunity for you to study the effects of development initiatives on a nation attempting to preserve its unique cultural identity and address gender roles within traditional and modern contexts.
