Information to help you prepare for your holiday or vacation to Mali courtesy of Bradt Guides. With a wealth of practical and background information, this travel guide is the essential companion for your holiday.
Reading up on the places you visit will help you get a little more out of vacations and help you understand local sensitivities better.
Mali, previously a French colony, is one of the most culturally rich and diverse countries in Africa. At its heart is the River Niger which winds through vast areas of Sahelian landscape, linking the fabled city of Timbuktu with the capital, Bamako. On holiday, travel and explore the famous mosque at Djenné, the extraordinary cliff villages of the Dogon people and much more in a country enlivened by colourful markets and arguably the best music in Africa.
In Mali, author Ross Velton looks at every aspect of travel in this seldom-visited country, enabling the visitor to get right to the heart of a land whose people are some of the most amicable in Africa. This is the first English-language travel guide to focus exclusively on Mali and covers all the practicalities needed when on vacation - where to stay and eat, health and safety advice, communicating in Bambara and French, rail links, travel and transport on the river. The diversity of Mali's culture is also made accessible for the traveller with this guide which encompasses the Dogon, Tuareg and other minority peoples, in addition to the history, religion and art of the region.

Summer 2004
Drew University is pleased to offer a unique summer study program that allows a firsthand exploration of the culture, traditions, and arts of West Africa. Since 1984, several hundred students have benefitted from Drew in West Africa, taking courses in African studies, art, and art history. Students are introduced to the ways in which art reflects the social, economic, and cultural changes taking place in modern Africa. We invite you to join us for an extraordinary summer one that will leave you excited by Africa and touched by its customs and people. The Program
July 10 to August 7, 2004
Mali is an extraordinary country, extending from the savannah to the edge of the Sahara, with thousands of miles of extraordinary landscapes, ranging from the Dogon cliffs to the scenic Niger River Delta. Mali still contains many vestiges of the period when it was the center of great medieval empires.
The program begins in the capital city of Bamako with a general orientation and introduction to the art and culture of contemporary Mali and to the cultures of its many peoples, particularly the Bamana, Dogon, and Tuareg. The group then travels to interior regions, visiting villages where traditional life remains vigorous. Throughout, particular attention is given to local art and its relationship to the culture producing it. In addition, emphasis is placed on discussions with Malians.

Unique Dogon Culture Survives in West Africa Chris Rainier
for National Geographic News
May 29, 2003
View a Dogon Photo Gallery by Chris Rainier: Go >> Hidden in the mysterious Bandiagara Cliffs of southern Mali, West Africa, live a people who claim to be the conduit between heaven and Earth: the people of the Dogon. The Dogon have survived for centuries, withstanding constant slave raiding parties of the successive empires of Ghana, the Sonrai, the Mossi, the Sao, the Fulani, and the Muslims from the north. Consequently, the Dogon have evolved a keen sense of cultural preservation and an ability to withstand outside forces of change. Today, some 300,000 Dogon live along a roughly 125-mile-long (200-kilometer) swath of land against the Badiagara Cliffs. Many live among 700 or so small villages with populations of less than 500. I recently traveled into the region in my capacity as National Geographic Cultures Initiative photographer. I was joined by my friend and colleague Wade Davis, an author, anthropologist, botanical explorer, and National Geographic Society Explorer-in Residence; a film crew from National Geographic Today;
