http://www.africatravelling.net/mali/bamako/bamako_culture.htm
Bamako - Culture Modern-day Mali with ( Bamako as a capital ) evolved out of a long, illustrious history of vast and culturally rich empires centred around the lush inland delta of the Niger River. At its peak, the medieval Mali empire was the one of the world's chief gold suppliers. Tombouctou, gateway to the Sahara Desert, was a renowned centre for trade, culture and Islamic learning. The fabled city was home to one of the largest libraries in the world. Mali is a landlocked country of 11 million people in the heart of West Africa. Traditionally the commercial centre of the region, Mali is bordered by the present-day countries of Mauritania and Senegal to the West; Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, and Burkina-Faso to the South; Niger to the East; and Algeria across the northern expanses of the Sahara. Mali is nearly twice the size of Texas. The terrain is predominately savanna and sand-covered plains; 65 percent of the country is desert or semi-desert. The Niger River flows through the heart of the country, flooding annually and creating pasture land for livestock. The river forms a magnificent inland delta across an alluvial plain supporting unique and lush vegetation for six months of the year. T he French colonized much of West Africa in the late 19th century, but left little mark on present-day Mali. Malians won their independence in 1960, but Sahel-wide droughts in the early 1970s and again in the early 1980s, severely eroded the country's agriculture-based economy. In 1992, citizens voted in Mali's first civilian government. Today the government works to put the country on secure economic footings, focusing on food security, natural resource development, environmental protection and education. Still, Mali today is one of the world's poorest countries, with an annual per capita income of $260 (1991, CARE-Mali). Eighty percent of Malians rely on the land for their livelihood. Most are farmers who practice rain-fed agriculture on small landholdings, many raise livestock and some earn their living from fishing the Niger, Senegal, Bani and other rivers.

Mali History
For centuries it was a crossroads: Caravans crisscrossed the region during the days of the ancient kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhai. Slaves, gold and ivory were brought from the south and traded in the Middle East and Europe for weapons, jewelry and salt. Mali drew people from all corners of the globe, and the city of Timbuktu was a center of learning, with a university that boasted 25,000 students. When merchant ships replaced the caravans in the 17th century, the trade routes collapsed and the region was forgotten (except, perhaps, for Timbuktu, which became synonymous with remoteness). Only recently have archaeologists begun to explore Mali's rich history.
Intensive European involvement in Mali's affairs began about 100 years ago, when it became a French colony. The colonists encouraged the raising of cash crops, such as cotton, at the expense of food crops, a situation not wholly rectified today. After gaining independence in 1960, Mali adopted socialist, anti-Western policies. Increasing economic turmoil, however, led to a 1968 military coup. The military ruled until March 1991, when riots toppled the government. Mali then switched to a half-military, half-civilian government, which lasted until elections could be held in 1992. To the pleasant surprise of many, the military stepped down and allowed former editor and government critic Alpha Konare to take his place as Mali's first democratically elected president. Konare and his supporters won again in 1997, but an opposition alliance boycotted the polls and has refused to recognize the results.

The landlocked West African country of Mali is one of the world's poorest nations. Since independence from France in 1960, Mali has suffered droughts, rebellions, a coup and a 23-year-long military dictatorship.
But since 1992, when the country's first democratically-elected president took power, Mali has had a civilian government OVERVIEW
    FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA The core of ancient empires going back to the fourth century, Mali was conquered by the French in the middle of the 19th century. In 1958 it was proclaimed the Sudanese Republic and the following year it became the Mali Federation, after uniting with Senegal. However, Senegal seceded and Mali became independent in 1960. Although large swathes of Mali are barren, the country is self-sufficient in food thanks to the fertile Niger river basin in the south and east. However, Mali's economic development is substantially hampered by its chronic foreign trade deficit, making it heavily dependent on foreign aid and remittances from emigrants working abroad. In 1985 Mali fought a brief border war with Burkina Faso, and relations continue to be strained. In the early 1990s the army was sent to the north to quell a rebellion by Tuareg tribes over land, cultural and linguistic rights. However, Mali remains relatively peaceful.

    Many people fear the hunters
By Joan Baxter in Mali They were taking pot-shots at the heavens even before they reached the presidential palace in the Malian capital, Bamako. Thousands of men, armed with home-made shotguns or bows and arrows, their mud cloth outfits weighted down with fetishes, were on the march. Traffic came to a standstill on the steep, winding road. The invaders came from the far-flung corners of Mali, as well as Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger and Senegal. Outside the palace gates, some danced, while the trigger-happy continued to shoot at the sky. One man wrestled a hyena on a leash, while others showed off their pythons, which were allowed to slither around the gardens.
Traditional hunting is about much more than killing animals. Hunters are healers, they are diviners
Tereba Togola, Director of Art and Culture in Mali Week-long festival This was the first-ever festival of traditional West African hunters.

Its place was taken by the Songhoi Empire of Gao, whose great kings were Sunni Ali from 1464 to 1492, and Askia Muhammad, from 1493 to 1528. At its greatest extent, Songhoi reached from the Atlantic to Kano and included most modern Mali and parts of Guinea. Most of the empire was destroyed by Moroccan invasion in 1591. In the 17th and 18th centuries, several small states developed along the Niger basin, notably that of Segu. The states fell during the mid-19th-century holy war waged by the muslin leader al-Hadjj Umar, whose theocratic empire extended from Timbuktu to the headwaters of the Niger and the Senegal. His son and successor, Ahmadu, was defeated by the French in 1893. In 1904 modern Mali was made part of the French colony of Haut-Senegal-Niger and in 1920 was constituted the French Sudan, as a constituent territory of French West Africa.

    Mali and Songhai
Mali is named after the empire of Mali, which was located in parts of modern-day Mali, Guinea, Mauritania, and Senegal. The empire was founded by the sultan Sundiata in the 13th century. Its most famous ruler, Mansa Musa, reigned from 1307 or 1312 to about 1332. He was so powerful and wealthy that when he travelled to Mecca, he took more than 60,000 attendants with him. He also brought enormous amounts of gold with him, and gave so much of it away that the price of gold fell in Egypt. During Mansa Musa's reign, Mali conquered the large neighboring kingdom of Songhai. But the empire began to fall apart after Mansa Musa's death, and eventually Songhai regained its independence. Under the feared ruler Sunni Ali, who ascended the throne around 1464, Songhai itself started to expand into a great empire. His son and successor, Sunni Baru, was overthrown by a rebel leader, Muhammad I Askia, who made Songhai even larger and mightier. The Askia dynasty reigned until the late 16th century, when the Songhai empire was broken up by invaders from Morocco After the fall of Songhai, the area that is now Mali was divided into warring kingdoms. In the late 19th century it became part of French Africa. It gained its independence in 1960.

Each two-week itinerary is unique. Consecutive programs are easily combined for a more extensive trip. All of West Africa is very rich in cultural and history. We select from the best. Participants have the opportunity to stay in rural villages, learn about daytoday life, meet artisans, health care personnel, educators and government officials and visit historic and cultural sites. Those who continue on to the coast can celebrate by relaxing on the beach. Highlights of the Mali program are visits to the renowned Timbuktu (Tombouctou), Mopti and Djenne, the fascinating enclave of the Dogon people, with its many sacred sites and a truly extraordinary riverboat trip on the Niger River. A few of the special features of the programs in the coastal countries are the variety of ethnic groups, visits to museums and markets, historic sites, traditional shrines and countless warm and welcoming rural villages.
    SAHEL JOURNEY (West Africa Interior)
    scheduled for October-November.
