Mali . The Sahel is the savannah region south of the Sahara which, after 750 AD, became the center of culturally and politically dynamic cities and kingdoms because of the strategic importance of the Sahel for trade across north Africa.
Ghana , but the Islamic revolution of the Almoravids, a Berber people living north of Ghana, splintered that kingdom. The Almoravids did not succeed in building their own, Islamic kingdom in the region. The Almoravid revolution, however, led to energetic Islamic proselytizing all throughout the Sahel. Many of the ruling families converted to Islam.
madrasas (Islamic universities) were endowed; Timbuctu became a meeting-place of the finest poets, scholars, and artists of Africa and the Middle East. Even after the power of Mali declined, Timbuctu remained the major Islamic center of sub-Saharan Africa.

http://www.geographia.com/mali/
Mali Exploring Mali Africa Homepage Geographia Home A lthough it cannot compete with the major safari countries for sheer natural spectacle, Mali is a nation of unusual interest and charm. Like Egypt, Mali is a country that is intimately related to a great riverin this case, the Niger. In addition, Mali is the location of some of the continent's most interesting cultural sites. Legendary Timbuktu is located here, and in the center of the country is the magnificently dramatic Bandiagara escarpment, home to the fascinating culture of the Dogon. Mali, the largest country in West Africa, is bordered by seven other states: Algeria lies to the north and northeast, Niger to the east, Burkina Faso to the southeast and, with the Ivory Coast, to the south. On the west are Senegal and Mauritania. Mali is shaped a bit like a butterfly, leaning to the northwest, with a much smaller left than right wing. The larger northwestern region of the country, which extends into the Sahara, is almost entirely arid desert or semidesert. In the central region, known as the Sahel, life follows the Niger River's annual flood cycle, with high water between August and November. In the southwestern area, rainfall and rivers are more plentiful, and this region is marginally more lush than the rest of the country. Mali's single most important geographic feature is undoubtedly the great Niger River, which traverses both the Sahel and the southeastern section of the country. The Niger, like the Nile, is both a critical source of sustenance and a major transportation arteryand in this latter capacity it is an excellent venue for boat travel.

When Senegal withdrew after only a few months, what formerly made up the Sudanese Republic was renamed Mali. Rule by dictatorship was brought to a close in 1991 with a transitional government and in 1992 when Mali's first democratic presidential election was held. After his reelection in 1997, President Alpha KONARE continued to push through political and economic reforms and to fight corruption. In keeping with Mali's two-term constitutional limit, he stepped down in 2002 and was succeeded by Amadou TOURE. Geography Mali Location: Western Africa, southwest of Algeria

    Why African Studies
Africa, recognized as the cradle of humanity, is one of the most culturally and environmentally diverse places on the planet; yet it remains largely unknown to people outside its borders. Contemporary Africa boasts rural societies steeped in ancient beliefs, alongside vibrant multicultural urban centers. Whether you are examining the arts, cultural studies, politics, economics, social change, development, or the natural environment, Africa is an ideal setting in which to broaden your intercultural understanding.

The Dogon are an ethnic group located mainly in the administrative districts of Bandiagara and Douentza in Mali, West Africa. This area is composed of three distinct topographical regions: the plain, the cliffs, and the plateau. Within these regions the Dogon population of about 300,000 is most heavily concentrated along a 200-kilometer (125 mile) stretch of escarpment called the Cliffs of Bandiagara. These sandstone cliffs run from southwest to northeast, roughly parallel to the Niger River, and attain heights up to 600 meters (2000 feet). The cliffs provide a spectacular physical setting for Dogon villages built on the sides of the escarpment. There are approximately 700 Dogon villages, most with fewer than 500 inhabitants. The precise origins of the Dogon, like those of many other ancient cultures, are lost in the mists of time. The early histories are informed by oral traditions (that differ according to the Dogon clan being consulted) and archaeological excavation (much more of which needs to be conducted). Because of these inexact and incomplete sources, there are a number of different versions of the Dogon’s origin myths, as well as differing accounts of how they got from their ancestral homelands to the Bandiagara region. The people call themselves

Information on the people of Mali, Africa
Despite being of Mali nationality, Mali's various ethnic groups hold many distinctions. The Bambaras, Dogons, Fulani and Tuaregs all maintain a strong sense of traditional identity to their pre-Malian roots.
The present borders of African countries were created for the needs and desires of colonists who gave little thought to the demographic makeup of the continent. Before the Europeans arrived, Africans were grouped in large, ethnic units, many of which held centuries-old antagonisms. By the time Europeans left, their legacy leaving new unnatural boundaries, rival ethnic groups were lumped into the same country and forced to battle it out for control. Whereas countries like Rwanda have seen extensive fighting between their ethnic groups of Hutus and Tutsis, Mali has been fairly lucky in her ability to accommodate the varied cultures within her borders, including the Bambara, the Fulani, the Dogon, the Bobo and Bozo, and the Tuareg. But despite an identity card stating one's nationality as Malian, natives maintain specific quirks for which their ethnicity is well known, adding to their uniqueness. BAMBARA: The largest ethnic group consists of the Bambaras that tend to be those that hold the highest positions in government and commerce. The Bambaras are concentrated in the capital city of Bamako and to regions just north and south. Their language is called Bambara and is the most common form of communication throughout the country.

Mali Time and Date Mali Culture Back to Top In spite of being one of the poorest nations in the world, Mali has long functioned as a crossroads between northern and western Africa and has developed a rich cultural tradition. Situated between the Arab world to the north and the black African nations to the south, it has for centuries been a cultural meeting place. Music and dancing are the most common cultural activities; they form an especially rich heritage among the Malinke and Songhai peoples. The Bambara and the Voltaic groups excel in the creation of wood carvings of masks, statues, stools, and objects used in animist worship. The tiewara, or gazelle mask, of the Bambara is remarkable for its fineness of line. Architecture is well developed in the Niger valley. The Sudanic style finds typical expression in the storied houses and mosques of Djenné and Timbuktu. Localized handicrafts include jewelry making by the Mandingo people, leatherworking around the Niger Bend, the weaving of geometric designs into cotton cloth, and the carving of statues for the tourist trade. The Museum of the Institute of Research and Documentation at Bamako contains collections of art from most of the country's regions. The National Archives of Mali, the National Library, and the Institute of Human Sciences are also located in Bamako, as is the Municipal Library. The Centre of Arab Documentation is located in Timbuktu, and there is a French Centre of Documentation in Bamako. The Library of the Office of Niger in Ségou covers agriculture, irrigation, and general science.

The largest tribe in Mali is the Bambara, who occupy many of the civil servant positions, but it is the Dogons and the Tuareg who practice a more traditional way of life. The Tuareg, or 'blue men of the desert' (named for their indigo robes and turbans) are an ancient nomadic tribe still eking out a desert existence. They are a proud race of people, famous for their fighting abilities and artwork, now staring urbanisation and resettlement in the face. Drought and government policy are threatening their traditional way of life but Tuaregs and their camel-caravans still appear unexpectedly on the horizon before melting into the desert again. The Dogons are incredibly industrious farmers living on the edges of a long narrow escarpment in the inland delta. Their homeland, the Pays Dogon, has been designated a World Heritage site because of its cultural significance. The Dogon are also famous for their artistic abilities and elaborate masks. The traditional music of Mali is based on the songs of the jalis (or griots ), a distinct caste in the social structure since the days of the Mali Empire. The choice of instrument for the jalis is the kora, a harp-lute string instrument with 21 strings stretched over a long neck of rosewood and plucked with the thumb and index finger of each hand. Jalis music has been actively encouraged by official policy that values African music over western influences. Mali's most famous musician, Salif Keita, is an ambassador for griot music and although he now resides in Paris there have been rumours that he occasionally turns up to play with the legendary Rail Band in Bamako.

    20. Art And Culture In Mali, West Africa: Program Description
Art and culture in mali, West africa. Historically, mali was one of the centers ofafrican art and presently offers a role in the development of world culture.
    http://www.antioch-college.edu/Edu_Abroad/mali_prog.htm
Art and Culture in Mali, West Africa Program Description
This unique field-study program uses visual and performing arts to develop cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking, and a foundation for better understanding of both American and Malian culture. Using art as a cross-cultural tool and a means of self-expression, students become familiar with contemporary Malian life which is influenced by ongoing traditions from the 12th century and earlier, Islam, the fading but ever close presence of colonialism, the persistent reality of contemporary neo-colonialism, and the complexity of globalization. By focusing on the intermingling of these traditional and contemporary issues, the Art and Culture in Mali, West Africa program offers a context within which the student is immersed in Malian culture and way of life.
The program begins with an orientation in Bamako, Mali's capital and a short trip to Siby, site of the founding of the ancient Mali Empire. During the second week in Bamako, students begin to acquire an understanding of Malian cultural traditions through immersion in homestays and language classes. After a three-week stay in Bamako, the group will travel to the interior of Mali where they become familiar with Malian life outside the capital including visits with artists, artisans and performers.
