MALDIVES IS AN ISOLATED nation and is among the smallest and poorest countries in the world. In olden times, the islands provided the main source of cowrie shells, then used as currency throughout Asia and parts of the East African coast. Moreover, historically Maldives has had a strategic importance because of its location on the major marine routes of the Indian Ocean. Maldives' nearest neighbors are Sri Lanka and India, both of which have had cultural and economic ties with Maldives for centuries. Although under nominal Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences after the sixteenth century, Maldivians were left to govern themselves under a long line of sultans and occasionally sultanas. Maldives gained independence in 1965. The British, who had been Maldives' last colonial power, continued to maintain an air base on the island of Gan in the southernmost atoll until 1976. The British departure in 1976 almost immediately triggered foreign speculation about the future of the air base; the Soviet Union requested use of the base, but Maldives refused. The greatest challenge facing the republic in the early 1990s was the need for rapid economic development and modernization, given the country's limited resource base in fishing and tourism. Concern was also evident over a projected long-term rise in sea level, which would prove disastrous to the low-lying coral islands.

    http://www.onlytours.com/destinations/asia/maldives/geography.htm
hr = escape(window.location.href); Geography A string of pearls scattered over the deep blue Indian Ocean - The first glimpse you get of this fascinating atoll- formation confirms two unique aspects of the Republic of Maldives: Not only does it consist of the most beautiful tropical islands, but 99% of its 90.000 km² is covered by the sea. 1190 islands are spread over 26 atolls, ringlike coral formations enclosing a lagoon, which gives the Maldives its unique paradise-like appearance. They stretch for about 820 km from North to South, 130 km at the widest point and do not exceed a length of 4.5 miles or an altitude of 6 feet above sea level. No more than 200 islands are inhabited, the rest includes the 87 tourist resorts and uninhabited islands, some of which are used for drying fish or other agricultural activities. The capital Malé, the seat of government and the centre of trade, commerce, business, health and education, is located in the middle of the atoll chain, a small island buzzing with the sounds and activities of about 75.000 people which is about one third of the population. Atoll Formation The atolls of the Maldives are formed from coral structures, separated by lagoons. The atolls are in fact part of a greater structure known as the Laccadives-Chagos Ridge, which stretches over 2000 kilometres. The islands are low lying with the highest point at approximately 8 feet above sea level. 'Faru' or ring-shaped reef structures form the atolls and these reefs provide natural defense against wind and wave action, on these delicate islands.

    CLIMATE
The climate of Maldives is warm year round, determined by the monsoons. However, being on the equator, the monsoons are mild and not as defined as in neighbouring countries. Of the two monsoons, the south west monsoon from May to October, brings more rain and wind. The north east monsoon, from November to April, is the dry season with very little wind. The temperature varies little with an annual average daily maximum of 30.4 degrees Celsius and the minimum at 2.4 degrees Celsius. The annual rainfall stood at just over 1,600 millimetres in 1992. In the same year, the country, with the equator running through it, had over 2700 hours of sunshine. 1984-1995 Average:
    • annual rainfall 1918.5 mm

    http://www.innermaldives.com/geography.html
The Maldives is a chain of 1192 small, lo-lying coral islands grouped in clusters, or atolls, about 600km south-west of Sri Lanka.
With a total land area of 298 sq km, the 26 atolls stretch out across the equator in a vertical strip 754km along and 118km wide. On these figures, less than 0.4% of the country is dry land. There are no hills or rivers, and none of the islands rises more than 3m above sea level or is longer than 8km. On the whole they are infertile and support only a limited range of flora and fauna.
The number of islands has been estimated variously from 1300 to 13,000, but the government determines that there are 1192, of which only 202 are inhabited. Counting the islands may seem a simple matter, but when flying over an atoll it's almost impossible to distinguish between a reef that is just below the surface, and a sand bank that is just above it. The situation may change with the next tide, and an obvious sand bank can be swept away in the next storm or be divided into two separate islands.
Officially, it's a matter of vegetation - an island means a vegetated land area, but even that is not definitive. It's easy to spot a tiny sandbank with a patch of scrub and wonder if it would qualify. There are round sandy spots with a single coconut palm, like the desert island of the comic-strip castaways, but the bigger islands have bamboo, banyan, mangroves and towering trees.
