The origins of the Maldivian people are shrouded in mystery. The First settlers may well have been from Sri Lanka and Southern India. Some say Aryans, who sailed in their reed boats from Lothal in the Indus Valley about 4,000 years ago, probably followed them. Archeological evidence suggests the existence Hinduism and Buddhism before the country embraced Islam in 1153 A.D.Not surprisingly, the faces of today’s Maldivian display the features of various faces that inhabit the lands around the Indian Ocean shipping and maritime routes, the Maldives has long been a melting pot for African, Arab and South East Asian mariners.
LANGUAGE
The language of the Maldivians is Dhivehi, a language which is placed in the Indro-Indian group of languages. Dhivehi with its roots in Sanskrit and according to some researchers Elu, an ancient form of Sinhala, (spoken in Sri Lanka), is strongly influenced by the major lanuguages of the region. The language has been influenced heavily from Arabic since the advent of the Islam in 1153 and English in more recent times, especially since the introduction of English as a medium of education in the early 1960s.

Though performances of traditional music and dance are not everyday events, there is a contemporary Divehi culture which is strong and adaptive, despite foreign influences which range from Hindi movies and Oriental martial arts to Michael Jackson and Moslem fundamentalism. Western fashions, pop music and videos are visible in the capital, but on public occasions, like the beginning and end of Ramadan, the celebrations always have a distinctly Maldivian touch.
A bodu beru means a big drum, and gives its name to the best known form of traditional music and dance. It's what tourist resorts put on for a local culture night, and it can be quite sophisticated and compelling. Dancers begin with a slow, nonchalant swaying and swinging of the arms, and become more animated as the tempo increases, finishing in a rhythmic frenzy. There are four to six drummers in an ensemble, and the sound has strong African influences. Contemporary local rock bands often perform at resorts where they do credible covers of the usual old favorites. Performing for a local audience they may incorporate elements of bodu beru in their music, with lots of percussion and extended drum solos. Cassettes from local bands are sold in Malé music shops.
Fish and rice are the staple foods of Maldivians with meat and chicken eaten only on special occasions. National dishes include fried fish, fish curry and fish soup. Areca nut (an oval nut chewed with betel leaf, cloves and lime) is the equivalent of an after-dinner mint. Alcohol is only available in tourist resorts. The local brew is raa, a sweet and delicious toddy tapped from the crown of the palm trunk. Apart from coconuts, there are very few fruits and vegetables grown on the islands, so most of the food served at tourist resorts is imported.

Maldives History and Culture
History The first settlers were believed to be the Aryans from India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The islands were said to be the trading crossroads of several maritime nations, long before European Maritime History began. Many traders and visitors came from Arabia, China and India. The national religion, Islam, was brought to Maldives by an Arabian traveler and it has since then been embraced by all the locals. The Portuguese ruled Maldives for a brief period during the 16th century. It then became a British Protectorate in the mid-fifties and gained full independence in July 26, 1965.

According to Maldivian legend, a Sinhalese prince named Koimale was stranded with his bridedaughter of the king of Sri Lanka in a Maldivian lagoon and stayed on to rule as the first sultan. alt.culture.maldives
One day in February of 2000 a single e-mail whizzed past countless computers in the vast abyss of the information super highway.....
.... this e-mail carried a single message, it said.... hello... I am here... and therefore I exist...
And thus, the news group, alt.culture.maldives was created. And so we venture out and touch the many millions of lives that live huddled in the corners of the notorious Usenet. We bring to them our culture, the Maldivian culture.
alt stands for Anarchists, Lunatics and Terrorists... a very fuzzy bunch of people.
Our newsgroup lies somewhere within all that, we are in the cultural section of the infamous alt hierarchy. There is one other place we could exist , but for now we would like to be here. True, it is a scary place, but every scary place has it's merits. The alt.culture.maldives (or simple-case acm for short), is the only one of it's kind. Well, that is a bit of a lie. There exists another , though it would be very hard to find where it exists.
Why all the fuss? One might wonder.... Well, it just so happens that being on acm makes us very unique. Trust me on this. I mean I could go on and on... about acm..., but I've got a feeling that you'd rather have me jump to the juicy bit about how you can read this newsgroup. Right? Ok, since you don't have an appeal for the arts, I would without future ado reveal the hidden secrets and mantras that you have to recite before you get admitted to the acm.

Orphaned Projects : soc.culture.maldives Note: The following project is still orphaned. It would be revived when the time is right
Hello and welcome to the soc.culture.maldives effort. Our mission is to create the Usenet newsgroup soc.culture.maldives. This is the second time that we have come forward to propose such a newsgroup. Our first attempt was in 1996, when it was found that not many Maldivians visited the net or joined in online discussions. During the last 2-3 years we have seen a large influx of Maldivians on the net, from every walk, age and social background. Thus we feel that it is time for Maldivians to join the Usenet elite and embrace soc.culture.maldives as our home for the future.
Due the nature of our endevour we have created a mailing list purely devoted to this conversation. You can view the conversation going on in our list by following the URL given below.

If you like the conversation on our list, your more than welcome to join us and help our effort to create this newsgroup. The more help we get, the faster we would be able to get this newsgroup out on the servers. Also this is a great way to learn about the Usenet before we move everything over there.

This square is not the kind of square that you might normally expect. You will not find the usual buildings on each side and a quiet pace. C onstructed along the northern waterfront in 1989, this e north side of the square is the sea, on the west are some commercial buildings, to the south is the Islamic Centre and the headquarters of the National Security Service (NSS), and on the east is the new Headquarters of the Police. On the sea-ward side is also the Presidential Jetty used by the President and members of the cabinet on trips to various locations around the Maldives and the world. The square is where earlier there used to be some government office buildings which were pulled down and given office space in other locations. It is also one of the places from which the mercenaries who invaded the Maldives on the 3rd of November 1989 attacked the HQ of the NSS, and where they held some civilians as hostages to try and force access to the compound.

The water is crystal clear, a beautiful blue-green color that I think must be etched deep somewhere within the ancestral human brain as the very model of nature's aesthetic elan. The beaches are broad and clean. The people are friendly and themselves beautiful. The beach resorts are the sort of place you expect only exists in the unfulfillable dreams of an overambitious Hollywood set designer: the settings for the private overwater bungalows are just a bit too perfect. When you arrive, your plane circles over a chain of atolls in the midst of clear blue sea, before coming to rest on a palm-fringed island not much larger than the runway and terminal building. You walk outside, where you're met at the curb by brightly-painted boats bobbing in water so clear you can see giant tropical fish by moonlight. It's idyllic. It's also one of the few places I've been that I'd really never consider going back to. I had never really thought about it as a travel destination. This put me on an even footing with most of my peers here in the USA: While the economy is based almost entirely on tourism, and it's a tremendously popular spot with European honeymooners, there are almost no American visitors to the Maldives. In the case of almost everyone I talked to, including some in the tourism business, I was the first person from the United States they'd ever met.
