Raga was the rattan ball used in the game which involved the players standing in a circle keeping the ball in the air with not just the feet but various parts of the body except the hands. There is evidence that the game was played in Melaka in the 15 century for it is mentioned in the famous Malay historical text of the Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals). In the years after World War II, until at least the early fifties, it was still possible to see the game played not only in the rural areas but in towns too, especially in areas where the Malay population was quite large. But in effect, the game had undergone a significant change by the mid- 1930s although the development of the modern game occurred somewhat gradually until more recent times. As far as it has been possible to ascertain, the game was first played differently in 1935 , in the state of Negeri Sembilan, during the Silver Jubilee celebration of King George V. It may be mentioned that Negeri Sembilan is the only Malaysian state with a school named after King George V. The school is in the town of Seremban.

"What is there in a name; a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet."
It is the 1850-s and the Industrial Revolution is in full swing. Tin is a very much sought-after commodity and it is for that express reason that 87 Chinese men made their way up the murky Klang River one fateful day. Upon reaching the place where the river joined with the Gombak River, they disembarked from their boats and headed east. They were soon to find huge deposits of tin there. This is one of the earliest settlements in the area, and today, we all know it as Ampang.
When mining began in earnest in Ampang, food, equipment and other necessities were brought up the Klang River by merchants. They could however only get as far as the muddy confluence of the two rivers. They therefore set up shop on a high bank where the Klang River met the Gombak River. Soon after, a thriving shanty town developed and shaped the destiny of a whole nation - this shanty town was Kuala Lumpur.
With an unglamorous and inauspicious name, simply and literally meaning "Muddy Confluence", Kuala Lumpur has grown into KL - a busy, bustling metropolis where glamour and bright lights are the order of the day. It may not have had a really dramatic past, but it has seen some action.

Brief History of Malaysia
Ancient Malaysia: 35,000 BC - 100 BC Historians often speak of Malaysia's ancient past as something "shrouded in mystery," a kind of black hole in Asian history. The truth is that there is not much archeological evidence or written records from ancient Malaysia; but it is likely that this situation will change. Many suspect that there are more prehistoric archeological sites along the coasts and in the jungles and hills, but given Malaysia's riotous vegetation it will take time to find them. We do know that homo sapiens have been in Malaysia for a long time. The oldest known evidence of human habitation is a skull from the Niah Caves in Sarawak dating from 35,000 years before Christ. On the peninsula, stone age tools and implements from about 10,000 BC have been found, and some archeologists suggest that they were left there by the predecessors of the Negrito aborigines - one of the earliest groups to inhabit the peninsula. We also know that about 2,500 years before Christ a much more technologically advanced group migrated to the peninsula from China. Called the Proto-Malays, they were seafarers and farmers, and their advances into the peninsula forced the Negritos into the hills and jungles. History's periodic waves of cultural evolution, however, soon created another group, the Deutero-Malays. They were a combination of many peoples - Indians, Chinese, Siamese, Arabs, and Proto-Malays - and they had risen by mastering the use of iron. Combined with the peoples of Indonesia, the Deutero-Malays formed the racial basis for the group which today we simply call the Malay.

Malaysia only gained full independence in 1957. Before that, its history was inextricably linked with events in the larger Malay archipelago, from Sumatra, across Borneo to the Philippines Srivijaya
The development of the Malay archipelago owed much to its location on the shipping route between India and China. The shipping trade flourished as early as the first century AD, introducing Hindu and Buddhist practices, along with wayang kulit The Melaka Sultanate

Explorers from France and Great Britain, including John Cabot (hired by King Henry VII), Jacques Cartier, Samuel de Champlain and Henry Hudson began to land in Canada in 1497. Permanent settlement by these two nations began in the early 1600s. Canada became a nation on July 1, 1867 as four provinces - Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick - came together to form the Dominion of Canada. Sir John A. MacDonald became the country's first Prime Minister. The remaining provinces and territories would join Canada in the coming years.

Home Country Analysis Briefs Malaysia Country Analysis Brief PDF version PDB version November 2003 Background Oil Natural Gas Electricity ... Links Malaysia
Malaysia is important to world energy markets because of its 75 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and its net oil exports of almost 300,000 barrels per day. Note: All information contained in this report is the best available as of November 2003 and is subject to change GENERAL BACKGROUND
Malaysia's economy has resumed growth in 2002 and 2003, following a stall in 2001, which was largely due to reduced demand for Malaysian exports. Following growth of only 0.3% decline in real gross domestic product (GDP) in 2001, Malaysia experienced real GDP growth of 4.1% in 2002. Growth is projected to reach 4.4% for 2003. Malaysia's merchandise trade surplus has risen sharply in 2003, after having fallen in 2001 and 2002. Malaysia's banking system has been stabilized, after being undermined by a high proportion of nonperforming loans during the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98. The country's banking sector went through a major restructuring in 2000, with many weaker financial institutions being taken over by stronger ones. In order to stimulate the economy, the country's government has increased spending since 2001, incurring a budget deficit of 5.6% of GDP in 2002.
