About Malaysia
History
Overview Rich in historical background, the course of Malaysian history has been determined by its strategic position, its tropical climate, the surrounding environment and the regime of the north-east and south-west monsoons. In the north, Kedah is reputed to be the most ancient State in the country. Archaeological findings at Bujang Valley furnish evidence of a Hindu-Buddhist civilisation that dates back to 300 AD. It flourished as an important centre of trade and commerce until the 13th century and it waned in importance. Down south, at around 1400 AD, Melaka, an important State located on the maritime route - the Straits of Malacca, was establishing itself as a trading centre. Abundant in clove, nutmeg and pepper, Malacca attracted colonial powers who coveted the monopoly of the spice trade, and gave the name 'Fabled Spice Islands of the East'.

Malaysia: a history in the hands of change
Malaysia's history is littered with outside influences such as Portugal, Spain, England and Japan, so how have they maintained their cultural heritage?
The Portuguese claimed the area that is Malaysi today as early as 1510. Malaysia held an important standing in Portugal's wealth in the East for about two hundred years, until 1700. In 1709, Spain annexed Portugal and claimed Malaysia as its own colony. In a fierce disagreement with England and Holland over Malaysian territory and trade, Spain closed all Malaysian ports to any ships not bearing a Spanish flag. However, this Spanish colony was eventually annexed by England and would remain England's for the next two hundred forty years. After uprisings in such colonies as Singapore and India in the 1800's, Malaysia began to consider its own independence. In 1918, however, Malaysia signed a revolution treaty with England, stating that they would not raise a resistance to England's soreignty in East Asia. Malaysia showed its loyalty by contributing large amounts of money to the Royal Air Forces during World War I. bodyOffer(22244) When Japan began its invasion of East Asia's mainland in 1940, Malaysia, unable to receive aid from its mother country, fell beneath the invasion in the spring of 1941. And Japan controlled Malaysia for the next three and one-half years.

    Malaysia
    HISTORY
The early Buddhist Malay kingdom of Srivijaya, based at what is now Palembang, Sumatra, dominated much of the Malay Peninsula from the 9th to the 13th centuries AD. The powerful Hindu kingdom of Majapahit, based on Java, gained control of the Malay Peninsula in the 14th century. Conversion of the Malays to Islam, beginning in the early 14th century, accelerated with the rise of the state of Malacca under the rule of a Muslim prince in the 15th century. Malacca was a major regional entrepot, where Chinese, Arab, Malay, and Indian merchants traded precious goods. Drawn by this rich trade, a Portuguese fleet conquered Malacca in 1511, marking the beginning of European expansion in Southeast Asia. The Dutch ousted the Portuguese from Malacca in 1641 and, in 1795, were themselves replaced by the British, who had occupied Penang in 1786. In 1826, the British settlements of Malacca, Penang, and Singapore were combined to form the Colony of the Straits Settlements. From these strong points, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the British established protectorates over the Malay sultanates on the peninsula. Four of these states were consolidated in 1895 as the Federated Malay States. During British control, a well-ordered system of public administration was established, public services were extended, and large-scale rubber and tin production was developed. This control was interrupted by the Japanese invasion and occupation from 1942 to 1945 during World War II.

No historian has been able up to now to pin-point the year Malacca was founded. Going by the State government's celebration of the 600th anniversary of the founding in August 1990, it could be deduced that Malacca was founded in 1390. However, some historians had placed the founding at between 1376 and 1400. That s Sumatran prince, named parameswara, was credited with the founding of the city and naming it Melaka in not disputed. A popular account puts the Prince as out hunting one day and while resting under a tree, one of his dogs cornered a mouse-deer or 'pelandok'. The mouse-deer in its defence attacked the dog and even forced it into the river-water. Parameswara was so taken up by the courage of the mouse-deer that he decided on the spot to found a city on the ground he was sitting on. Thus, Melaka or Malacca was born. Many claimed that the prince took this name from the 'Melaka' tree that was shading him. As time went on, Melaka grew bigger and bigger and became more and more prosperous. Parameswara, incidentally, was the first Malay prince to become a Muslim and inevitably, Islam became the religion of Malays in the Peninsular (now West Malaysia).

History of the Malaysian General Election
Pre-Independence The first election held in Malaya was held for the George Town Municipal Council, Penang on December 1, 1951. This was followed by the Kuala Lumpur Municipal Council election in February, 1952. In 1955, a new Constitution was introduced, transferring most of the responsibility of the government to the elected representatives of the people. Following this, the first election to elect members to the Legislative Council of the Federation of Malaya was held on 27 July 1955. Besides the 52 elected members, the Federal Legislative Council also consisted of three ex-officio members, 11 state and settlement representatives of Scheduled interest, three representatives of racial minorities and seven nominated reserve members. Post-Independence The Parliamentary and State elections of the federation of Malaya was held in 1959 after the federation became an independent and sovereign nation on 31 August 1957. These elections were significant in Malaysian history in that it was the first election to result in the creation of entirely elected legislatures both at Federal and State levels. It was also the first election to be held under the supervision of the Election Commission which was formed in 1958. There have been eight National or General Election held since then. Malaysia came into being on Sept 16, 1963 when the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak formed a federation. On Aug 9, 1965, Singapore left Malaysia and became an independent republic.

The National Cancer Society of Malaysia, under the distinguished Patronage of the late YAB Tun Abdul Razak, was inaugurated in 1966.
The following is a brief outline of the activities of NCSM since its inception:
  • The Society recognized the needs of cancer patients coming to KL for radiation treatment and assisted them by providing rooms in various hotels around the General Hospital. NCSM subsequently refurbished two wards and provided 80 hostel type places for patients coming to KL for treatment. These wards were eventually handed over to the Ministry of Health.
The Society noted with concern that patients with cancer of the uterine cervix were presenting for treatment at a very late stage. As no facility was available, NCSM, with the cooperation of The Institute for Medical Research and the late Dr. Ungku Omar, opened the first cytology-screening centre at the IMR. This resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of advanced cases of cancer of the uterine cervix.
