When the Proto-Malays, made up of seafarers and farmers, came to the peninsula they sent the Negritos into the jungles and hills. The Proto-Malays came from China and were technologically advanced, especially in comparison to the Negritos. After the Proto-Malays came the Deutero-Malays, which were made up of many different people - Arabs, Chinese, Indians, Proto-Malays, and Siamese. The Deutero-Malays were proficient in their use of iron and when they united with Indonesians, they combined to make up the people known today as the Malay. Hindu Kingdom - 100 BC - 1400 AD - During this period, Malaysia's culture changed dramatically with the arrival of Indians. Indians initially went to the Malaysian peninsula in search of a mystical place known as the "Land of Gold." Although the places in Malaysia may not have been what they were looking for, they didn't leave, but continued to arrive in search of gold, spices and aromatic wood. In addition to trade (with goods), the Indians introduced Hinduism and Buddhism to the peninsula, thus bringing temples and other cultural traditions from India. As a result, local kings in Malaysia combined what they considered to be the best aspects of India's government with their own structure, thus resulting in "Indianised kingdoms." Today, the Indian influences can best be seen in a traditional Malay wedding ceremony, which is similar to those in India.

Malaysia - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Malaysia has historically been the meeting place of vastly different cultures, religions, and people. People from all over the world have come to settle in Malaysia, each having brought something new to the country. Some, of course, took things away from Malaysia.
Early Malaysian history begins with the migration of Chinese people onto the Malaysian peninsula about 10,000 years ago. For thousands of years, the people of Malaysia lived somewhat isolated from the rest of the world. In 1 AD, two unrelated events would dramatically change Malaysia and begin bringing people from all over the world to Malaysia's shores.
At the time, India was getting gold and other metals from the Roman Empire and China. Around 1 AD, the Chinese Huns cut off the land route between India and China and the Roman emperor Vespasian ended shipments of gold to India. Desperate to resume the importation of gold and other metals, India sent huge ships with hundreds of men to Southeast Asiaincluding Malaysiato find other sources. But when the Indians arrived on the Malay Peninsula, they didn't find goldthey found tin. While not as valuable as gold, tin provided plenty of wealth to the new Indian settlers.

History: In the same year, communist guerrillas – the bulk of whom were ethnic Chinese – launched an armed struggle aimed at establishing an independent socialist state. ‘The Emergency’, as the colonial authorities dubbed it, lasted formally until 1960. However, the serious fighting was over by the mid-1950s and in 1957, Britain proceeded with its plan to grant independence to the Federation of Malaya. In 1963 the Federation of Malaya merged with Singapore and the former British colonies of Sarawak and Sabah (North Borneo) to form Malaysia. Singapore seceded to become an independent state in its own right in 1965, leaving Malaysia in its present form. Tunku Abdul Rahman, who had taken over as premier of the federation in 1957, remained as Prime Minister of the newly expanded republic. He remained in office until 1970, when he was replaced by Tunku Abdul Razak. The dominant political organisation was the United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) which allied itself with several smaller formations to create the Barisan Nasional (NF, National Front). In 1982, the NF won the general election scheduled for that year under the new leadership of Mahathir Mohammed.

Malaysia - History Until the end of the last century modern Malaysia was a collection of sultanates around the coast. The British grouped these separate factions into a federation and Malaya - the colonial pre-independence version of present Malaysia - was born.
Although Britain already had a trading post based in Penang, British influence in the region really began with the founding of the East India Company, created to move into ex-Dutch colonies during the Napoleonic wars and prevent rival French expansion.
In 1874 at the Treaty of Pangkor a British Residency was established, effectively ruling Malaysia until the Japanese invasion and victory in December 1941. Power briefly returned to the British after WW2, then in 1957 independence from Britain was granted. However, Malaysia did not take its present form until 1965. In the early 60s Singapore attempted a two-year membership of the Federation, but it did not work out and the states split again in 1965.
